  • D1661 47077 47613 47840 ‘NORTH STAR’

On 5th June 2021, 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ made her first heritage-era appearance in BR blue with red backing to her nameplates, recreating her late-1970s look. The liberal coating of dust on parts of her roof hints at her 19-month imprisonment in the shed at Williton. Photo by Jon Aroussi © CC BY-NC 3.0

Our ‘celebrity’ Class 47 is famous for a number of reasons – first, she was one of a small number of ‘standard Type 4’ locomotives that were adorned with names by the Western Region of BR in March 1965. Later, when repainted in BR corporate blue livery, she continued drawing attention to herself by carrying a non-standard version of that livery throughout a period when anything ‘non-standard’ was being eliminated.

The loco started life in two-tone green with small yellow warning panels, as was her livery in recent times when working on the WSR as D1661. In 1973, when she was repainted from green to blue by the staff at Old Oak Common, the BR ‘double arrow’ logo was not applied. This strange omission carried on for several years of running and was still not corrected at a subsequent repaint. However, the following year (1976) saw her brought back into line with the standard livery applied. If you have photos from this period, please reply to this email or contact us because we are trying to build a gallery of photos for this loco and would welcome your help.

There are several photos on the Class47 website, but not enough to be able to determine the exact dates of the livery changes. Here’s a link to the gallery on the Class47 website: http://class47.co.uk/c47_photos_1.php??index=6&jndex=2&kndex=61&s_loco=1661

Another reason that our loco is famous is because she was chosen to haul the very last scheduled loco-hauled cross-country service on 19th August 2002, the 1M56 08:46 from Penzance to Manchester, paired with 47 847. The event was filmed by Locomaster Profiles and is available on DVD via this link: https://www.videoscene.co.uk/north-star-south-west-47840-penzance-birmingham

Our loco has carried four running numbers during her time in mainline service. Introduced as D1661 in February 1965, she was named ‘NORTH STAR’ on the 20th March 1965 at a ceremony at Paddington by the then Minister of Labour, Ray Gunter. The loco then departed for Bristol where sister loco D1662 (who would work the train back to Paddington) was named ‘ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL’, surely the outright winner of the “longest ever nameplates award”, were there to be such a thing ? No, believe it or not, that title went to one of her sister locos, D1664 ‘GEORGE JACKSON CHURCHWARD’.

An extract from ‘Modern Railways’ magazine dated May 1965 shows two locomotives that received their names on 20th March 1965. This was in the tradition of the Great Western Railway but a somewhat defiant gesture that was in opposition to the developing corporate image of the new ‘British Rail’. Photos by BR and B Stephenson, courtesy of Ian Allan Publishing.

After naming, the new ‘NORTH STAR’ worked to Bristol along the very line that had been conceived and built by IKB and worked by the original ‘NORTH STAR’, the first steam loco to operate on the Great Western Railway. This famous loco had been built by Robert Stephenson & Co. in 1837 and modified for the broad gauge under the direction of Daniel Gooch (later Sir Daniel Gooch), the 20-year old ‘Superintendent of Locomotive Engines’ that had been recruited by Brunel from Stephenson’s own firm !

Then, after the end of steam on BR in August 1968, the ‘D’ prefix became redundant and locos across the country starting having their ‘D’ prefixes peeled off or painted out. Our loco became ‘1661’ with new-style ‘Rail Alphabet’ lettering while still green and continued to carry that number when first repainted into BR blue. Then, in February 1974, our loco became 47077 under the new TOTAL OPERATIONS PROCESSING SYSTEM (TOPS) that was being introduced to bring BR into the computer age.

This changed to 47613 in 1984 when our loco was fitted with Electric Train Heating (ETH, ETS) to be able to power the air-conditioned coaches of the day. The final change was to 47840 in November 1989, after being fitted with long range fuel tanks to facilitate cross-country working on the full length of the northeast-southwest route. Here’s a link to a photo that was taken immediately after conversion from steam-heat to electric-heat capability: https://www.flickr.com/photos/marcusgilmour/32839886990/in/photostream/

After completing 43 years of mainline service, ‘NORTH STAR’ was acquired by the DEPG and was refurbished by Brush in Loughborough before working a mainline charter from Derby to Minehead on the 28th May 2007, culminating in a handover ceremony that took place on the platform at Minehead station.

After eleven years of work on the WSR, the loco was suffering from severe corrosion in several areas of her roof, resulting in water leaks that resulted in damage to her bodywork, so she was ‘stopped’ in 2018 and underwent a significant roof rebuild and bodywork restoration that lasted three years (partly due to lockdown). She emerged in her new heritage-era identity as 47077 on 5th June 2021.

Another chapter in the history of this ‘celebrity’ locomotive opened in January 2022 when she moved from Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway to Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) on contract hire, to support the expansion of diesel-hauled services on the NYMR. After a lengthy period at Pickering due to line closure at Goathland, the loco eventually reached Grosmont where her overhaul was completed and the loco entered service on the NYMR on 19th Jul 2022, quickly becoming a regular member of the DEPG fleet.

  • Class 47 D1661 47077 47613 47840 “NORTH STAR”

BR-Brush ‘Type 4’ 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ is pictured arriving at Pickering Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway after working the ‘MOORLANDER’ Pullman service from Grosmont on Thursday 21st July 2022. Photo by Martin Fisher © CC BY-NC 3.0

Current Status: Operational, based at Grosmont on the NYMR

D1661 “NORTH STAR” (also known as 47 077, 47 613 and 47 840) was built by BR at Crewe Works in 1965 to a design that had been developed by Brush Traction, in conjunction with BR. The locomotive carries the distinction of being the last locomotive scheduled to haul a cross-country express service on the UK network on the 19th August 2002.

This “celebrity” locomotive was purchased by The D&EPG in 2007 for preservation and on leaving main line service, went first to Brush Traction at Loughborough for a light overhaul, a repaint into original two-tone green livery and for the reinstatement of dual braking. On Bank Holiday Monday 28th May 2007, the loco worked a final special charter train from Derby to Minehead. At about 14:30, D1661 rolled to a stand at Minehead, her mainline career now behind her and a new one beginning in the hands of The D&EPG on the West Somerset Railway.

From that date through to the end of 2018, D1661 regularly worked on the WSR and was a reliable performer.

The loco was withdrawn from service at the end of the 2018 season due to deterioration of the bodywork, in particular the roof, and has since been repaired and has been outshopped in BR blue, carrying her TOPS designation 47 077 and the familiar BR double-arrow logo and red-backed nameplates, replicating the livery that she carried when allocated to Cardiff Canton depot in the late 1970s.

The loco is on hire to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for the next five years and will be earning income for the DEPG whenever she is in use.

  • Weekly Roundup – 10-Oct-25

The WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) was working the 12:25 service from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead when pictured at Crowcombe Heathfield on Tuesday 30th September. The blue sky and bright sunshine has been with us for most of the autumn and is set to continue for a while longer. Photo by Jo Ward © CC BY-NC 3.0

In a surprise adjustment to the Operating Timetable, Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) has been rostered to substitute for the WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) on Sunday 12th October because of non-availability of the DMU. Although the Class 33s are fitted with Electric Train Heating (ETH) equipment, this won’t be of help because the 1950s-era coaching stock on the WSR is not ETH-compatible and needs steam from the locomotive for heating. Luckily, the weather forecast is for mild and sunny weather, so the 40-mile afternoon trip from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and return should be pleasantly warm !

Each vehicle of the DMU is fitted with warm air heaters that provide heat through ducts at floor level, so the DMU is the ideal machine to use on the lighter-loaded services during the autumn. No doubt the WSR will have their Class 115 DMU repaired and back in service soon, but the three vehicles of the set are soon to be due for some major work which will keep them out of traffic for a while. Planning ahead, the WSR has acquired a Class 117 power car and two Class 108 trailers, the intention being to make one good Class 108 driving trailer to use with the Class 117 in a 2-car set to allow the Class 115 to undergo overhaul. Such ‘composite’ sets were operated in BR days, taking advantage of the ‘Blue Square’ multiple-working system that is used by many of the DMU classes.

DMUs were the mainstay of the Taunton-Minehead services from the mid-1960s through to closure of the line by BR in January 1971, so the DMU is a very important and highly relevant part of the WSR‘s heritage, as can be seen in the selection of vintage photos below:

The DMU working the Minehead-Taunton shuttle was pictured waiting in the bay platform at Taunton in October 1970. This was just three months before the Minehead branch was closed to all traffic. The branch was partially re-opened as the West Somerset Railway in 1976. The bay platform and track still exists at Taunton Station today, but the platform to the right and the canopy have been removed. Photo by John Wood © CC BY-NC 3.0

An unidentified ‘Hymek’ was pictured hauling a failed DMU into Bishops Lydeard station from the Minehead direction, some time in the late 1960s. The Class 35 ‘Hymeks’ were frequent visitors to the line but were more typically employed on the summer holiday services. Photo by Chris Osment © CC BY-NC 3.0

Many more photos from the pre-closure days can be found by using this link to the website that is provided by Steve Edge. Well done Steve for developing and maintaining this fantastic resource www.wsr.org.uk !

The next event to be held on the WSR will be the AUTUMN STEAM WEEKEND that will take place from Friday 17th through Sunday 19th October and was to have been an all-steam lineup including LSWR T3 Class 4-4-0 No. 563 and GWR Castle Class No. 5029 ‘NUNNEY CASTLE’, but will now also include Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) covering for GWR 4-6-0 7812 ‘ERLESTOKE MANOR’ which has had to undergo repairs that cannot be completed in time. The weather forecast is surprisingly good, so let’s hope that the event is well attended so that it can become a regular feature in the calendar going forward.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026: will be posted ASAP

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the unexpected improvement in the weather has allowed the bogies to remain accessible for work even though they are both still outdoors. At least one of the bogies will be moving inside the loco shed soon, so that the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) can take place using the Dye Penetrant Inspection process.

The primary suspension leaf springs are undergoing refurbishment at OWEN SPRINGS LTD. in Rotherham and will be on their way back to Williton during the next few weeks. Each bogie has six primary suspension leaf springs that bear down on the axle boxes and these are the most important springs in the suspension system. The secondary suspension transfers the weight of the loco body to the bogies and consists of two massive leaf springs and eight coil springs on each bogie. The secondary springs of the ‘B’ bogie have been tested and found to be within limits and will be returning to Williton with the refurbished primary springs. The secondary springs of the ‘A’ bogie have yet to be removed but will also undergo inspection and testing.

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – outstationed at Bishops Lydeard in support of WSR operations. This loco will move to Williton at the end of the operating season so that the bodywork repairs that were started last winter can be continued. Class 14 D9526 will be moving to Bishops Lydeard to cover for the ’09’.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco has now returned to Williton so that her planned maintenance work can be continued and has been rostered for duty on Sunday 12th October to cover for the DMU. The ’33’ will run ‘Light Engine’ (LE) from Williton on Sunday morning to work the 12:25 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and return service, then run ‘LE’ back to Williton.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco remains outstationed at Minehead and is available to support WSR operations should the need arise – as it has during the forthcoming Autumn Steam Weekend event that takes place from Friday through Sunday 17-19th October 2025. Click this link for details.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – now back at Williton after working the 80-mile diagrams that originated from Minehead on Saturday and Sunday 27/28 September. The loco also worked an Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) train on Tuesday 30th September and was pictured while returning ‘Light Engine’ to Williton later that day.

ON SHED – this week, we jump back to July 1972 where we find Class 47 1677 ‘THOR’ (47091, 47647, 47846 then 57308 ‘TIN TIN’) at Crewe Works being prepared for a refresh to her ‘Full Yellow Ends’ even though her paintwork remained in a heavily faded condition. The cab door was already yellow and was not being prepared for repainting. Perhaps the loco had received repairs to collision damage ? Does anyone have the answer ?

This loco was delivered new to Cardiff Canton depot in April of 1965 and became one of the WR ‘namers’, in fact a very slightly younger sister to our own D1661 (47077, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’. She still operates on the main line today – but in her ‘bodysnatcher’ guise as 57308. Any information that you can provide to help build a picture of what happened to this loco in 1972 would be welcomed.

Many thanks to ANDY GALPIN for sharing another intriguing photo with us all.

Please continue to send in your photos of locos on shed, at the platform or in action, because we appreciate them all, any Class, any place, any time, the more varied, the better. Use our CONTACT FORM to get in touch. Thanks !

  • Weekly Roundup – 26-Sep-25

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 will be bringing the curtain down on scheduled diesel loco-hauled workings for the 2025 season when she completes the 80-mile diagrams that start at Minehead on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September. Pictured at Blue Anchor on a positioning move from Williton to Minehead on Tuesday 23rd September 2025 by Rich Hiscox © CC BY-NC 3.0

This weekend sees the end of the scheduled diesel loco-hauled workings on the WSR, the occasion being marked by the use of Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September, when the diesel-hydraulic will work the 80-mile diagram that originates from Minehead on both days. The loco moved ‘Light Engine’ from Williton to Minehead on Tuesday 23rd September to be in position for this weekend. Normal ticketing applies, so please do try to come along and make the most of the opportunity to ride behind D7017.

From next Tuesday, the RED timetable will come into force (3 trains each way) with running on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in addition to weekends. This timetable is based on the use of two steam locomotives or one steam loco and the WSR‘s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU).

The next event to be held on the WSR will be the AUTUMN STEAM WEEKEND that will take place from Friday 17th through Sunday 19th October and will (understandably) feature an ALL STEAM lineup including LSWR T3 Class 4-4-0 No. 563 and GWR Castle Class No. 5029 ‘NUNNEY CASTLE’.

The Annual General Meetings (AGMs) of the West Somerset Railway Heritage Trust (WSRHT), the West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA) and the West Somerset Railway WSR) will take place at Bishops Lydeard Village Hall on Saturday 27th September, in sequence and arranged to allow members who might be involved in all three organisations the chance to attend each AGM in turn (a formidable endurance challenge!).

Keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page in case the motive power allocations change (we will TRY and keep this page aligned with the latest information).

The Weekly Roundup will be in a shortened format this week and next because it is holiday time again and for us, that means an opportunity to visit the ‘far South’ of the UK and stay at The Lizard, the most southerly point in the UK. The weather has been amazing so far with blue skies and temperatures of 18C, but no doubt that will soon change !

Here’s a photo taken yestarday at the HELSTON RAILWAY, a delightful example of a heritage railway that is still developing and gradually clawing back the trackbed of the line that used to branch from the Truro to Penzance main line at Gwinear Road station (near Cambourne) and run to Helston. The line closed to passengers in 1962 and to freight in 1964. The entire branch was devoid of trackwork and fittings by mid-1965, but the southerly section is gradually being cleared and restored now.

Truthall Halt is currently the terminus of the HELSTON RAILWAY and is therefore the most southerly railway station in the UK ! Non-functional Class 127 DMBS M51616 and a suburban Mark 1 coach were propelled by Barclay 0-4-0DM No 446 ‘KINGSWOOD’ on the short but steeply graded and winding climb from Prospidnick Halt on Thursday 25th September 2025. Well worth a visit ! Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

WELL DONE STEVE for arranging this, we hope that it is the first of many such charters !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work on the electrical system re-wire resumed last Saturday although this loco is having to share resource with her sister for the time being.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is now indoors on No. 2 road at Williton and undergoing some maintenance and a completion of the repaint that was not complete when the loco was pressed into service during the very dry weather that affected steam loco operations in July and August.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be in regular use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and is a popular choice for the diesel-hauled services on that railway. Our loco was in use on Wednesday 24th September and we would welcome any photos of her out and about.

  • Weekly Roundup – 05-Sep-25

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 was evidently doing all of the work on the climb from Williton to Crowcombe Heathfield with an 11-coach equivalent load that included D7018, both locos resplendent against the darkening skies. Pictured about to cross the A358 at Sampford Brett bridge on Saturday 30th August 2025 by Mike Lanning © CC BY-NC 3.0

The HYMEK 50 WEEKEND was a TREMENDOUS SUCCESS with a total of 240 miles of ‘Hymek’ haulage that included 80 miles of ‘double-heading’ with each ‘Hymek’ taking turns to lead. The weather could have been better because the occasional torrential downpour sent people running for cover, but the periods between the showers were bright and sunny and the temperature was just right.

Attendance was much higher than expected, so THANK YOU VERY MUCH to ALL who came along and rode the trains. The WSR retail outlets were also delighted with the patronage – and caught out to some extent by the level of demand. The late substitution of Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) for the booked steam locomotive turned the event into an all-diesel mini-gala, and it was good to see the line operating so well, worked entirely by ‘Type 3’ diesel traction.

We have received so many photos that it is hard to select just a few for the Roundup, so apologies if you have submitted photos that are not published here. Another very good resource for photos of anything ‘WSR’ is the website wsr.org.uk which carries 30 images of the HYMEK 50 event, all of which can be viewed by clicking on this link.

Here are a few of the many images that were captured on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August 2025:

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was leading the 1225 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead service with sister D7017 coupled behind with eight Mk 1 coaches in tow. The two gleaming locos were worthy subjects for the hundreds of camera lenses that followed them on their daily 120-mile adventures. Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 worked the 0825 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead service on both days and was pictured approaching the platform at Bishops Lydeard with the return working (the 1000 departure from Minehead) on Saturday 30th August 2025. Photo by Mike Pinn © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) also joined the party, standing-in for a steam loco on the 1015 Bishops Lydeard and subsequent 80-mile diagram on both days. Pictured while coasting down the bank alongside Castle Hill on Saturday 30th August 2025, next stop Williton. Photo by Mike Lanning © CC BY-NC 3.0

Fifty years of ‘Hymek’ preservation also applies to the two other survivors, D7029 in the care of the Diesel Traction Group at Kidderminster and D7076 in the care of the Bury Hydraulic Group on the East Lancs Railway. The latter was out and about on a visit to the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway when pictured on Sunday 31st August 2025 by DEPG member Cameron Walker © CC BY-NC 3.0

And bringing the curtain down on a thoroughly enjoyable ‘HYMEK 50’ weekend, Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was pictured reversing onto her train at Minehead to form the 1830 departure for Bishops Lydeard on Sunday 31st August 2025, with visiting driver Steve Wainwright at the controls. The coming week sees the return of the standard BLUE timetable (four trains each way per day) with steam working from Bishops Lydeard and Class 33 D6575 (33057) working from Minehead. Keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page in case the motive power allocations change (we will TRY and keep this page aligned with the latest changes).

And just in case you haven’t seen enough pictures of ‘Hymeks’ already, here are a few more, this time on the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY where D7018 is one of the guest stars at their AUTUMN DIESEL GALA that started on Thursday 4th September this week and runs through this weekend (with a mixed traction day on Sunday).

D7018 would soon be teamed up with resident Class 45 ‘Peak’ D123 (45125) for a double-headed super-powered run from Leicester North station on the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY on Friday 5th September 2025. LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – although tempted by the lure of the ‘Hymek’-hauled services that were passing through Williton on Saturday morning, the D1010 team managed to complete the job of removing the primary suspension equalising beams and pedestals from the ‘A’ bogie before the double-headed ‘Hymek’ service pulled in to Williton, after which there was a significant reduction in the number of volunteers on site !

The equalising beams and pedestals were found to be well worn and in need of refurbishment, but were fully intact and still functional. The degree of wear was more extreme than that found on the ‘B’ bogie, but the main components can be recovered by removing and replacing the bushings that are intended to wear over their lifetime.

The next step with the ‘A’ bogie is to remove the primary springs (eight coil springs and two massive leaf springs) and get the springs tested and inspected.

D1010 – the two equalising beams and pedestals from the primary suspension of the ‘A’ bogie were removed from their hiding place within the bogie frames on Saturday 30th August 2025 and placed on a pallet for cleaning and inspection. Although well worn, these important parts can be refurbished and will soon be ready to go back into the bogie. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 30th August 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – outstationed at Bishops Lydeard in support of WSR operations.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is currently outstationed at Bishops Lydeard after having her booked period of Rest & Relaxation at Williton cut short due to operational requirements. If the loco can’t go to Williton, then the Williton volunteers will have to go to the loco, which is what will probably happen this weekend.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco was returned to traffic on Saturday 23rd August and has been in regular use ever since, supporting the WSR and covering for steam locomotives. This loco is booked to work the BLUE timetable services originating at Minehead this coming weekend (6/7 September) and mid-week (Tu/We/Th) as far ahead as the FORTIES WEEKEND (20/21 September).

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – already covered, this loco has been the centre of attention and has delivered a stunning performance as a payback to her many supporters.

We are very grateful to everyone who has donated to or worked on D7017 during her bodywork overhaul. Your efforts are a fitting tribute to this loco, in HER FIFTIETH YEAR IN PRESERVATION !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – already covered – this loco was moved by road (thanks to Allelys Heavy Haulage) to the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY’S AUTUMN DIESEL GALA that runs from the 4th to the 6th of September.

D7018 was moved by road from Bishops Lydeard to Quorn on the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY by Allelys Heavy Haulage so that the ‘Hymek’ could take a starring role at their AUTUMN DIESEL GALA event. Pictured at Quorn on Tuesday 2nd September 2025 by Paul Tucker © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work on the engine rebuild has slowed down due to resources being applied to D9526 to support the WSR through the peak summer season, but the team will get back onto this project in the coming weeks.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco was called into use on Thursday 4th September to work the 1015 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and return service, after which Class 33 D6575 (33057) took over for the rest of the diagram. The ’14’ was used because of temporary non-availability of drivers for the Class 33.

D9526 was put to work on the 1015 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and the 1220 return service on Thursday 4th September 2025. The remainder of the diagram was worked by the booked traction, Class 33 D6575 (33057). Pictured at Minehead by Steve Speck © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be in regular use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and has been fairly busy although the use of steam locomotives has gradually increased as the risk of lineside fires has reduced. On Thursday 4th September, the ’47’ was used to tow visiting ‘Slim Jim Crompton’ Class 33/2 33202 (D6587) to Pickering for collection by road transport. The ’33’ was returning to the Mid-Norfolk Railway after a period on hire at the NYMR.

47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ was attached to visiting Class 33/2 33202 (D6587) ‘Dennis G Robinson’ to tow the ’33’ to Pickering where she would depart from the NYMR after a period on hire. Pictured on Thursday 4th September 2025 by Josh Smith © CC BY-NC 3.0

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is available for use as required.

    ON SHED

Not more ‘Hymeks’, I hear you say, but these photos include three other classes of loco as well, so the appeal is somewhat broader. These photos show D7017 alongside sister preserved loco D7029 at Old Oak Common depot near Paddington, in May or June of 1975. D7017 has been daubed with ‘PRESERVED – TAKE NO PARTS’ messages in the style of the steam locos at Woodham’s Yard in Barry, in an attempt to ward off the souvenir hunters. Did that strategy work, I wonder … ?

Many thanks to long-time DEPG member Neville Sloper for providing us with these photos. Let us know if you were there on this day and can identify the Class 31, the Class 50 and the four Class 47s that also feature in these photos.

Two of the four Class 35 ‘Hymek’ survivors D7017 (nearest) and D7029 were pictured together at Old Oak Common depot, some time after their withdrawal from service in 1975 (thought to be May or June). Photos by Neville Sloper © CC BY-NC 3.0

Please send in your photos of locos on shed, at the platform or in action, because we appreciate them all, any Class, any place, any time, the more varied, the better. Use our CONTACT FORM to get in touch. Thanks !

Several questions have been asked about the absence of the BR double-arrow symbol from the now blue-painted D7017 and the presence of the D+EG logo instead. The reason for this is that BR had a stong view of the use of their logo back in the 1970s and the D+EG were not allowed to use it under the ‘passing off’ rules. So, the double arrow logo was removed and the D+EG logo that had been made at home by John and Margaret Crane was applied. The logo was hand-cut from ‘Fablon’ (sticky-backed plastic), a material that was quite popular at the time. It is a lot easier to get the logos made these days, so it is not as much of a challenge !

We have already received compliments about the high standard of finish on D7017 and asked questions as to how it was painted. Well, it was entirely hand painted by HARRY SPENCER, mostly in his own time, building on quality preparation work that was carried out by the Minehead engineering team and by DEPG volunteers. The repairs to the bodywork were paid for by donations raised during the last 10 months totalling approximately £20,000 for which we are very grateful. MANY THANKS to all who have donated to and carried out the work on D7017 to bring her up to the condition that we see today.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – the team continued their work on both bogies last weekend, with the ‘B’ bogie already looking much better as a result of the application of some primer in the areas where the dye penetrant inspection is not going to be required. The removal of the equalising beams and pedestals from the ‘A’ bogie was attempted, but is going to have to wait until more volunteers are available, which will be next weekend.

The following photos are those that we were unable to include last week. Apologies for the delay in sharing them.

D1010 – bogie overhauls in progress – the ‘B’ bogie is nearest the camera and is the most advanced in terms of the disassembly work, with all brake rigging and almost all of the suspension components removed. D1010 – by comparison, the ‘A’ bogie is only having the primary suspension components removed for the time being, so that remedial work on the equalising beams can take place on all four sets simultaneously (to save setup costs). Class 09 D4107 (09019) – outstationed at Bishops Lydeard in support of WSR operations.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco returned to Williton on Saturday 23rd, swapping places with sister loco D6575 (33057) as planned. Work started straight away with an underframe and bogie wash, following by an inspection and a re-greasing of the various linkages and bushings. However, on Sunday 24th, the loco was unexpectedly called back into service to stand-in for a steam loco that had developed a steam leak. Now back in the clutches of the Operating Department, this loco is unlikely to return to Williton for continuance of her planned maintenance until the middle of next week.

D6566 (33048) – back at Williton – but for only 22 hours, the team had just started to carry out planned maintenance tasks when the loco was called back into action. Pictured at Williton with Ashley at work on Saturday 23rd August 2025 by Ben Elvey © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco was returned to traffic on Saturday 23rd August and has been in regular use ever since, supporting the WSR and covering for steam locomotives. This loco is booked to work the BLUE timetable services originating at Minehead next week and as far ahead as the FORTIES WEEKEND (20/21 September).

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – already covered, this loco has been the centre of attention with multiple volunteers attending to details both inside and externally, to get the loco ready for her big event.

We are very grateful to everyone who has donated to or worked on D7017 during her bodywork overhaul. Your efforts are a fitting tribute to this loco, in HER FIFTIETH YEAR IN PRESERVATION !

D7017 gets attention from Roy as he prepares to freshen up the paintwork on the axlebox covers. He has already given the bogies a fresh coat of black paint. Pictured on 23rd August 2025 by Ben Elvey © CC BY-NC 3.0

D7017 gets attention from (L-R) Ethan T and Ethan W as they deal with the many details around the underframe that need painting in specific colours to identify their functions. Pictured on 24th August 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – already covered – this loco was moved into the loco shed on Saturday 16th August and received a thorough external clean-up and a coat of varnish (courtesy of Graham) on Saturday 23rd to ready her for the HYMEK 50 WEEKEND (30/31st August) and for her subsequent appearance at the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY’S AUTUMN DIESEL GALA that runs from the 4th to the 6th of September. We want her to look her best ! This loco is booked to be collected by Allelys from Bishops Lydeard on Monday 1st September.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work on the engine rebuild has slowed down due to resources being applied to D9526 to support the WSR through the peak summer season, but the team will get back onto this project in the coming weeks.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco has now been serviced and moved onto No. 4 road at Williton, where she stands at the ready, in case she is called upon to assist a steam loco at short notice.

D9526 was in use to shunt the yard on Saturday 16th August 2025, to put D7018 inside the loco shed and shunt D6575 onto No. 1 road ready for fuelling and a return to service the following week. D7017 is also in view at the far end of No 1 road, having arrived from Minehead on the previous Thursday. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be in regular use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and has been kept busy by the steam ban that had been re-introduced following some significant fires on the moors. If you have been enjoying riding behind our ‘celebrity‘ loco, please send us some photos to share with our readers ! This week, we feature some photos that have been submitted by DEPG member Matthew Fenwick, for which we are very grateful.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is available for use as required.

If you can help by donating your time to any of these projects, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

The big news this week is announcement of the details for the HYMEK 50 WEEKEND that takes place on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August 2025, when both D7017 and D7018 will be hard at work on an enhanced 120-mile daily diagram that includes 40 miles of DOUBLE HEADING each day !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 is now back at Williton after a ten-month stay at Minehead where this loco has undergone a thorough bodywork overhaul and a complete re-paint into the early BR-blue with the small yellow warning panels. The loco carries the ‘D+EG‘ logo as it did in the early days of the WSR when BR would not allow their double-arrow symbol to be displayed on non-BR locos.

MANY THANKS to all who have donated to and carried out the work on D7017 to bring her up to the standard that we see today.

D7017 – another excellent repaint carried out by Christoff (L) and Harry (R) and the team at the Minehead facillity. We are very grateful to Harry for doing the bulk of the loco body painting in his own time. Thanks also to all of the team at Minehead for the high quality work repair carried out on this loco. LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – the team were working on both bogies last weekend, with the ‘B’ bogie receiving a coat of primer from Ian F in the areas where the dye penetrant inspection is not going to be required, while Gordon and Glenn concentrated on the removal of the equalising beams and pedestals from the ‘A’ bogie so that the replacement parts can be made for both bogies at the same time, which will be more economical in terms of machine shop setup costs. The seemingly never-ending task of scraping dirt and grease from the bogie frame was entrusted to Ethan W who seemed to be enjoying the challenge.

In parallel, work proceeds on the cleaning and painting of the brake components from the ‘B’ bogie, with help from the ‘Tuesday Team’ being very much appreciated. We want to get this loco back on its bogies before the winter. If this sounds like a tall order, it is, so COME ALONG AND HELP US MAKE IT HAPPEN !

Get in touch using our CONTACT FORM and we will send you the volunteering application form and take it from there.

Apologies, but issues with uploading of photos to our website have restricted the number of photos that we can include in the roundup this week. Please check our website in a day or two, we hope to have resolved the issue by then.

The loco will work the Minehead diagram on Saturday morning 23rd before handing over to D6575 at Williton at around 1300.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco was ‘released to traffic’ on Sunday 17th August and apart from a fairly low fuel level, was ready to take over as ‘Duty Loco’ to allow her sister D6566 to get her regular dose of TLC from Ian and his team. D6575 was fuelled at Williton on Tuesday 19th and will swap roles with D6566 at approximately 1300 on Saturday 23rd when the 1225 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead service calls at Williton.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is now back at Williton and will be going out on a test run next week to prove her reliability and provide driver refresher training. No issues arose during the engine start and run to Williton, so everything is looking good for our 50 YEARS of HYMEKS weekend, the 30th and 31st August, where we expect to have both of our ‘Hymeks’ in use, both singly and together.

We are very grateful to everyone who has donated to or worked on D7017 during her bodywork overhaul. Your efforts are a fitting tribute to this loco, in HER FIFTIETH YEAR IN PRESERVATION !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is at Williton and is fully serviceable and available to the WSR for use as a ‘Thunderbird’ loco if required. Meanwhile, with two Class 33s and a Class 14 available for service, the opportunity has been taken to move D7018 into the loco shed so that she can receive a thorough clean-up and a coat of varnish in readiness for her HYMEK 50 WEEKEND (30/31st August) and her subsequent appearance at the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY’S AUTUMN DIESEL GALA that runs from the 4th to the 6th of September. We want her to look her best !

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be in regular use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and is being kept busy by the steam ban that has been re-introduced following some significant fires on the moors. If you have been enjoying riding behind our ‘celebrity‘ loco, please send us some photos to share with our readers !

    ON SHED

Last week, we featured the photo below and we asked for information regarding the white disc-like object on the cab window of the Class 50. We received several responses from readers, but the first to arrive was from an ex-BR Toton Depot fitter, DAVID GODFREY, and he responded as follows:

“With regards to the featured photograph, what appears to be a white disc on the windscreen is actually an air train pipe “master gauge” which is connected to the loco’s buffer beam air train pipe by a coiled flexible pipe connected to a standard air train pipe coupling.

These gauges were more accurate and more regularly calibrated than those fitted in the cab and would have been used during a comprehensive brake test carried out at either a major exam, or in the event of an operational incident such as a signal passed at danger, station over run etc., where the loco’s brake performance may have been brought in to question. They may also have been used whilst carrying out adjustments to the drivers brake valve etc.

As an ex-Toton fitter I used these gauges numerous times.”

Many thanks to David for providing this insight and thanks to Andy Galpin for providing the photo.

Crewe Diesel Depot on Wednesday 26th August 1970 and 416 (50016 later ‘Barham’) was on shed alongside 1728 (47136, 47621, 47839). The white disc on the cab window of the ’50’ was the subject of the question that was posed last week. It is in fact a piece of test equipment, a ‘brake pressure master gauge’. Here are two more of Andy Galpin’s photos, this time from his ‘local’ depot, as he explains below:

“Here are a couple more shots taken at or near to what was my ‘home’ depot – Frodingham 36C. In this instance I am pleased to advise that the Depot Foreman would normally agree to let you go round, if you asked him first. By this time, the diesel depot’s allocation was only ever Class 08 shunters that patrolled the yards and link lines in connection with the steelworks. However there were many visitors for fuel and light attention, primarily from 40B (Immingham) and 41A (Tinsley).”

These were all Immingham (40B) locos at this time. D5817 survives as 31285 and is based on the Weardale Railway. Photo by Andy Galpin © CC BY-NC 3.0

MANY THANKS to Andy for sharing his photos with us all.

  • Weekly Roundup – 10-Aug-25

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 returned to Williton on Thursday 15th August 2025 after a 10-month spell at Minehead undergoing a thorough bodywork overhaul and a repaint into the early BR-blue livery that was carried by some ‘Hymeks’ before the rules of standardisation were enforced. Photo by Linda Trott © CC BY-NC 3.0

The big news this week is the RETURN OF ‘Hymek’ D7017 after a 10-month stay at Minehead where this loco has undergone a thorough bodywork overhaul and a complete re-paint into the early BR-blue with the small yellow warning panels. The loco carries the ‘D+EG‘ logo as it did in the early days of the WSR when BR would not allow their double-arrow symbol to be displayed on non-BR locos.

MANY THANKS to all who have donated to and carried out the work on D7017 to bring her up to the standard that we see today.

The loco was started up at Minehead on Tuesday 13th after being prepared thoroughly by Neil, Colin F and Tim, the engine starting straight away and sounding fine. The loco was returned to Williton on Thursday 15th on the back of a service train because the Vehicle Inspection & Brake Test (VIBT) procedure needs to be completed and signed off before the loco can work alone. We expect to be able to complete this inspection work during the coming week, which will then allow the loco to go out on test.

This all bodes well for our 50 YEARS of HYMEKS weekend, the 30th and 31st August, where we expect to have both of our ‘Hymeks’ in use, both singly and together. We will be sending out a DIESELGEN bulletin and updating our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page with the timetable details as soon as they are released.

D7017 – another excellent repaint carried out by Harry at the Minehead facillity, with much of the work being carried out in his own time as a way of conserving DEPG funds. We are very grateful to Harry and all of the team at Minehead for the high quality work done on this loco. Pictured at Minehead on Thursday 15th August 2025 by Harry Spencer © CC BY-NC 3.0

Click here to go to the WSR’s events page for the ‘Hymek’ weekend.

The coming week offers another interesting mixture of pure steam, pure diesel and mixed traction on the WSR, so please keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page in case the motive power allocations change (we will TRY and keep this page aligned with the latest changes).

Click here to go to the WSR’s Timetable page then click on the day of interest then click VIEW TIMETABLE.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – the team continued working on the bogies at Williton on Saturday 9th August, with Leroy being tasked with preparing for the removal of the equalising beams from the ‘A’ bogie. This is not an easy task, so we were not expecting to finish it in one session, and we did not disappoint ourselves ! The team will progress the work during this coming weekend.

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – outstationed at Bishops Lydeard in support of WSR operations.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is being kept very busy and will be outstationed at either Bishops Lydeard or Minehead according to the requirements of the WSR Operations Department.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – on Tuesday 5th August, this loco was lifted and her bogies run out so that an underframe inspection could take place.

D6575 (33057) – the body of the loco was lifted from the bogies using four synchonised electric jacks at Williton on Tuesday 5th August 2025. Photo by Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 3.0

D6575 (33057) – the bogies were then rolled out from under the loco so that the loco underframe could be inspected. This also allowed the bogies to be examined from the top down. Pictured at Williton on Tuesday 5th August 2025 by Paul Fleet © CC BY-NC 3.0

No issues were found, so the bogies were rolled back in position and the loco body lowered back onto the bogies. On Saturday 9th, the Class 33 team comprising Ashley, Ben, Charlie, Ian and Tom then set to work reconnecting the traction motor cables, re-fitting the blower bellows, brake hoses, handbrake linkage and AWS receiver, all of which was achieved by crawling under the loco in very hot and dirty conditions to get the job done. WELL DONE TEAM ‘CROMPTON’!

The ‘Tuesday Team’ also lent a hand by re-fitting two of the four bogie retention brackets and re-attaching the vacuum exhauster silencers and ensuring their security. The remaining inspections tasks are due to be completed this coming weekend and we hope to see the loco go out on test after being re-fuelled (fuel has been arranged for Tuesday 19th August).

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – as covered previously, this loco is now back at Williton for completion of her Vehicle Inspection & Brake Test (VIBT) and will soon be ready to go out on a test run to prove her reliability and provide driver refresher training.

The focus of attention has been on sister loco D7017 but D7018 remains ready to go and may be used in support of her sister when test running.

D7018 is stabled on the Goods Shed road at Williton while her big sister D7017 gets the attention. D7018 is fully serviceable and is ready to go. Pictured on Saturday 9th August 2025 by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work on the engine rebuild has slowed down due to resources being applied to D9526 to support the WSR through the peak summer season, but progress continues to be made on the electrical wiring and on the cab superstructure, as per the photo below:

D9518 (NCB No. 7) is stabled inside the loco shed on No. 3 road at Williton while undergoing a full re-build. The cab-to-engine bulkhead was treated to a coat of glass by DEPG volunteer Andy P on Saturday 9th August 2025. Photo by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco did not operate as planned last week because of a loose fuel injection pump drive coupling that was causing concern by refusing to stay bolted up tightly. The loco returned to Williton on the back of a Class 33-hauled passenger service and then moved into the loco shed. The issue has now been sorted out and the loco given an ‘A’ exam, and is expected to be made available for service next week.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be in regular use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and is being kept busy by the steam ban that has been re-introduced following some significant fires on the moors. Our volunteer loco manager Ian R went up to the NYMR to ride behind our ’47’, but the loco was in the shed undergoing routine maintenance, so he had to ride behind a ’37’ instead !

    ON SHED

A short while ago, we featured the photo below and we asked for opinions about what might have been going on. We received two responses from regular contributors NEALE LONG and BRIAN RINGER, as follows:

From Neale: “The image depicted of 1634 at Bletchley shed with roof panels open, leads me to think that the coolant header tank needed replenishing. Class 47s were notorious for all sorts of leaks and this may have been what was being investigated. The headcode displayed, if correct, would be some form of empty coaching stock run out-of-course as a special, Bletchley being close to Wolverton Works, leads one to think that it brought over a unit/stock for overhaul and then retired to Bletchley where all was not found to be well. That’s the best I can come up with. The locomotive at the time was allocated to the D16 division of the LMR, which was Nottingham, meaning in effect it was a Toton based locomotive. The LMR at the time allocated their rolling stock resources on a Divisional basis for some arcane reason.”

From Brian: “You asked for info regarding this rather unusual maintenance setting for 1634 at Bletchley. 1E Bletchley was my local shed, but I can only guess at what was going on because the depot was intended for maintaining the LMR AM10 (Class 310) outer suburban fleet. As a result all roads inside the maintenance shed were 25kV wired. I can only imagine that 1634 has been put on the outside fuelling road, which is unwired, and with no “working at height” regulations in 1970 the local fitters have used the ladder to sort out the problem on the Brush Type 4. On risk assessment, either falling off a ladder or touching the 25kV overheads, it seemed like a “no brainer” to the fitters!!

Many thanks to our correspondents for providing this insight and thanks to Andy Galpin for providing the photo.

Bletchley Depot on the 15th August 1970, and six-year-old Class 47 1634 (47052) was undergoing some kind of ‘al fresco’ maintenance involving an open roof and a ladder. This loco entered service on 10th November 1964 and worked for more than 38 years before being withdrawn and sent for scrap in April of 2003. Not a bad innings. Photo by Andy Galpin © CC BY-NC 3.0

Another of Andy Galipn’s photos from a week or so later depicts two fairly new machines ‘on shed’ at Crewe Diesel Depot, namely two-year-old Class 50 number 416 (50016 later ‘Barham) and six-year-old Class 47 1728 (47136, 47621, 47839 ‘Pride of Saltley’). Both were allocated to the LMR’s D05 Stoke Division at the time. Andy provides the following notes:

“416 & 1728 found at the back of Crewe Diesel depot during an ‘unofficial’ visit on Wednesday 26th August 1970. I am rather intrigued by the small white disc on the Class 50’s windscreen that seems to be plugged in further down via a coiled air line – any ideas? I also love the two ancient wheelbarrows and the red flag in the foreground! 1728 was later to become Virgin’s 47839 ‘Pride of Saltley’.”

MANY THANKS to Andy for sharing his photo with us all.

Please send in your photos of locos on shed, at the platform or in action, because we appreciate them all, any Class, any place, any time, the more varied, the better. Use our CONTACT FORM to get in touch. Thanks !

The date of the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) will be Saturday 13th September and the meeting will be held at Williton as usual. We will be sending the AGM information package out to all members who are on the fully-paid-up register on 21st August. We will use the ‘paper’ or ‘paperless’ setting in your ‘Membermojo’ account to determine if you want a mailed or emailed version of the AGM calling notice, so check your setting by using the link or simply scan the QR code further below. Thank you !

More progress has been made on our recently-acquired Fork Lift Truck (FLT) and ‘Cherry Picker’, with both machines receiving the attention of our volunteers last week. The FLT was repainted (where necessary) by the ‘Tuesday Team’ and the ‘NiftyLift’ aerial platform had the basket safety rails painted yellow by Reece on Saturday. Well done all !

The next edition of the DEPG Quarterly Newsletter has been produced by Mark Bladwell and has been sent out by mail or email to all members who were on the register of members on 28th July. Please get in touch using our CONTACT FORM if you have not received your copy. Many thanks to Mark for keeping the Newsletter production running on time.

The DEPG is a charity and is run entirely by volunteers, many of whom give both their time and their money to the continuance of work on the locos in the DEPG fleet. If you have been enjoying the roundup for free, have you considered joining us for just £1 a month ? You can then add your name to all of those helping out on the above projects and play your part in the future of our locos for a lot less than the price of a cup of coffee!

JOIN US using whichever membership class is appropriate for your situation and means. CLICK HERE or on the image below or use the QR code to get the details.

If you would like to go one step further and come along to help with the work on the locos in our fleet, then please use our CONTACT FORM to let us know that you would like to volunteer and we will respond with more details.

We look forward to hearing from you !
