Monday 29th December is the day that has been allocated for the movement of Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) and locos from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead where they will undergo maintenance during the closed season.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 will also be in use and will haul Class 108 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) driving trailer (DTLC) 54270 (originally 56270) from Bishops Lydeard (BL) to Minehead (MD), calling at Williton (WN) to collect the other Class 108 vehicle that has been stabled there for some time, DTLC 56496. The ’14’ will then return to BL to resume her duties as station pilot where she is standing-in for Class 09 D4107 (09019) while that loco undergoes winter maintenance at WN. A detailed explanation for this working will be included in the next edition of the WEEKLY ROUNDUP.

The approximate timings for these special workings are as follows:

10:00 : Class 115 DMU departs BL for MD (on a test run)

10:45 : Class 14 D9526 and Class 108 DTLC 54270 depart BL for WN (to collect DTLC 56496)

11:30 : Class 14 D9526 and both Class 108 DTLCs depart WN for MD.

12:00 : Steam loco and ECS depart BL for MD.

12:45 : Steam loco and ECS depart BL for MD.

14:00 : Class 14 D9526 and Brake Van depart MD for BL.

15:00 : Class 115 DMU departs MD for BL

NOTE – the timings may change to suit operational requirements

On the Great Central Railway, Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 will be working the ‘NIGHTRIDER‘ on New Year’s Eve along with BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 73156 and will haul four trips with action starting at 7pm and ending at 1am. What a great way to see in the New Year – Please try to support this event if you can !

  • Weekly Roundup – 19-Dec-25

Former GWR ‘Castle Class’ HST was pictured approaching Blue Anchor station on Wednesday 14th August 2025 with power car 43155 leading and 43154 trailing. A wonderful image of summer on the WSR – captured by Mike Lanning © CC BY-NC 4.0

The end of an era – the last public service to be operated by a ‘Castle Class’ HST arrived at Plymouth Station on Saturday 13th December 2025, bringing the curtain down on 49 years of HST rail travel in the Southwest of the UK. The HST had worked a service from Penzance and joined her two sister sets for a photoshoot, one of which had worked between Exeter and Penzance earlier that day and another that had worked on the Newquay branch, covering for a failed DMU !

The High Speed Train was developed in the mid-1970s as an interim solution pending electrification of the main trunk routes and was marketed as ‘Inter-City 125‘, becoming such a success that HSTs ended up operating over most of the UK, providing a step-change in the rail experience of the time. The upgrade in comfort and speed was such that ticket income soared and this justified the building of more sets, and the expansion onto cross-country routes in addition to the London main lines. A real success story !

From now on, it will be necessary to visit Scotland to ride on the last of the survivors, or take a trip to Mexico, or take a charter on one of the preserved sets. These highly competent machines are still a pleasure to travel on, and in many ways are superior to some of the trains that have replaced them – but that is because they were so good to start with !

An update on the WSRA Christmas Prize Draw – for the restoration of BR 2-6-4T 80064

Thanks to donations from 153 supporters including many who responded after being made aware of this appeal via the roundup, the West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA) have raised £1,922 that will be put towards the restoration of BR 2-6-4T 80064 to get this loco into service on the WSR. The ‘Standard 4 Tank’ is an ideal loco for the WSR, having sufficient power for the gradients while also carrying sufficient water and coal for the distances being worked. We look forward to seeing this loco operating alongside our heritage diesel loco fleet, just as many did during the last years of steam on BR. THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all who contributed !

The draw closed on 15th December after raising £1,922 in support of 80064.

    Another unusual working ….

GBRf Class 57 ‘Body Snatcher’ 57310 (formerly D1618, 47037, 47563, 47831 before conversion) was pictured on a test run at Orchard Junction on the truncated remains of the former GWR branch to Barnstaple on Tuesday 16th December 2025. Photo by Paul Fleet © CC BY-NC 4.0

It is not every day that one can see a Class 57 at work on WSR metals, but 57310 visited last Tuesday on a test run associated with a plan to use the Norton Fitzwarren triangle to turn Class 800 ‘IETs’ or ‘Flying Cucumbers’ as they are sometimes known. Apparently, Network Rail are planning to carry out work at Plymouth in February and this will require some trains to be turned on the Norton triangle so that the first class accommodation ends up at the correct end of the train. More details will be provided when we have a better understanding of what is going to be taking place and why. Meanwhile, more test runs are expected to be carried out in the near future, which could bring other classes onto the WSR !

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026 – the following major events have been confirmed by the WSR, and the dates for a wide range of special services have also been announced – see the WSR Events Page for details and dates.

LOCO NEWS: The heavy demands on our volunteers at this time of year have temporarily reduced the available working hours as we all struggle to fit in domestic duties, seasonal duties and the occasional festive event ! Therefore, the loco update will be a bit on the brief side, but normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the focus is on the ‘B’ bogie and the need to get it ready for Non-Destructive Testing so that we can get it painted and then start building the bogie up again. In parallel, Colin F and Reece are overhauling the water pumps and planning the logistics for the repositioning of the ‘A’ engine to allow attention to the known trouble spots (cylinders 3 and 12).

Class 08 08401 (D3516) – this loco is now on No 2 road outside the loco shed while Ian and his team work on the detailed planning for the conversion to dual braking. In parallel, the sourcing of the remaining few special parts is ongoing (vacuum chambers, door panels, pipework and so on).

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – this loco is outdoors on No, 1 road and will soon be receiving a new set of brushes for her generator – which involves having to remove the recently-installed Westinghouse compressor to get access to the generator ! Luckily, we don’t have to do this very often, which is just as well because the set of 18 brushes cost over £500 !

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is outdoors on No 1 road and is having one of her vacuum exhausters removed for overhaul. When the shed is available, she will move indoors so that her leaking engine room roof can be removed and repaired.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is now based at Bishops Lydeard where she will remain ‘on duty’ in support of the Christmas seasonal steam-hauled services. She is rostered for use on Saturday 20th December for night driver training, during which she will operate between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead under cover of darkness !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is stabled outdoors on number 1 road at Williton and is receiving some light maintenance and undergoing internal cleaning. The loco will undergo Ultrasonic Axle Testing some time in the New Year.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is currently based at Loughborough on the Great Central Railway and will remain there until the end of April 2026. The GCR will be using the loco for their NIGHTRIDER event on New Year’s Eve and also for their SPRING WEEKEND, in addition to their DIESEL GALA in April. Please do try and go along to one or more of these events to show your support for D7018 and help ensure that her visit is a big success !

Here are the running dates for D7018 on the GCR:

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – Terry came to the rescue and provided some photos of the progress being made on this loco by the Saturday and Tuesday teams. Well done all !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is now based at Bishops Lydeard where she will remain throughout the winter to cover for Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019). This loco will be in use on Monday 29th December for Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) moves between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, returning to Bishops Lydeard by the end of the day.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be based on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway but has just encountered an issue with her ‘triple pump’ – which is an electrical machine that is a combined water pump, oil pump and fuel pump, all driven from one DC electric motor.

The motor has suffered an internal fault that has resulted in some segments of the commutator bring burned, so the loco has had to be stopped to prevent further damage pending a replacement triple pump being obtained and fitted.

DEPG volunteer Viv Jones alerted us to the new Channel 4 series ‘STEAM TRAIN DIARIES’ in which ‘NORTH STAR‘ makes an appearance in the THIRD and fourth episodes, substituting for a steam loco during the period of high fire risk, earlier this year. Click this link or the image below for detailsMANY THANKS to Viv for letting us know about this TV coverage.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is stabled outdoors on Number 4 road at Williton and is fully serviceable, and has been used several times during the last few weeks to move locos around the yard.

If you can help by donating your time to any of these projects, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

ON SHED – this week, we go further northwards and feature a photo of an ex-works Class 37 at York, but it is a ’37’ that has a story to tell. Here’s the narrative that was provided by the photographer, ANDY GALPIN:

“This was 10th March 1979 – I was living in York and had just saved up for a half decent SLR camera. My first couple of test shots were at the station and this was 37154 which looks ex-works and may well be out on test from Doncaster? I seem to recall that it came in piloting a southbound passenger service hauled by a ‘Peak’, but I’ve no further detail.

It struck a bit of a chord with me, as 6 years previously I’d seen the then D6854 (of Eastfield I believe) pretty well smashed at both ends and awaiting serious attention at Doncaster Works. At that time I thought it would be lucky to survive.”

So, what is the story behind the damage to D6854 back in 1973 ? Does anyone have any information to share ? Please email contact@depg.org or use our CONTACT FORM if you can help with these questions. MANY THANKS to Andy Galpin for sharing his photos and memories with us all.

English Electric Class 37 37154 (D6854) was the subject of some discussion at York Station on Saturday 10th March 1979. The loco was in ex-works condition and might have been on a test run from Doncaster Works. Can you help provide the backstory on this loco ? Please continue to send in your photos of locos on shed, at the platform or in action, because we appreciate them all, any Class, any place, any time, the more varied, the better. Use our CONTACT FORM to get in touch. Thanks !

  • Weekly Roundup – 12-Dec-25

The DEPG’s Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019) along with driver ‘Baz’ Banthorp provided the background for the trainee secondmen and their trainer at Williton on a cold and showery Saturday 6th December 2025. The autumn and winter seasons provide ideal opportunities for training, so DEPG member and WSR Diesel Traction Inspector John Leach has once again given up his time to teach a new batch of trainee secondmen by using a mixture of classroom lectures and practical training sessions. Last Saturday afternoon saw the first of the practicals and culminated in the trainees being able to couple and uncouple a loco from another rail vehicle. The loco in use was Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019) which was driven by former BR and Eurostar driver ‘Baz’ Banthorp and was used to shunt the DEPG’s brake van B952527 from No 3 road to No 1 road, to be coupled to Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048).

Trainee secondman (and DEPG Trustee) Linda was clearly enjoying a sense of achievement after completion of her training tasks at Williton on Saturday 6th December 2025. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 4.0

And similarly, trainee secondman Kaz was then able to demonstrate her abilities as she moves another step closer to becoming a crew member on the DEPG locos. The opportunity was also taken to shunt the yard to move recently-acquired Class 08 shunter 08401 (D3516) closer to the loco shed, which entailed using Class 09 D4107 (09019) to draw Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) out onto the running lines so that the ’08’ could move itself from No 1 road to No 2 road. The below images are linked to short videos that cover these movements:

The WSR‘s 2025 Christmas Season is progressing well, with the ‘SANTA EXPRESS‘ and the other Christmas Specials booking up quickly, in fact, several specials are already fully booked or past their pre-booking cut-offs, so ACT NOW if you are thinking of supporting the WSR while simultaneously getting into the Christmas spirit. Click on this link or the image below to go to the WSR‘s events page and book your place while you have some choice remaining. The WSR image below is dated 8th December, so availability will have tightened since it was produced:

Following the recent visit of the ‘Inspiration‘ travelling exhibition train to the WSR, another unusual visitor in the form of ‘EVENING STAR‘ arrived to haul the train to Paddington. However, it was not BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 ‘EVENING STAR’ but General Motors Class 66 66689 ‘EVENING STAR’ instead !

Info: Standard Class 9F 92220 was the last steam loco to be built for British Railways. It was released to traffic from Swindon Works on 25th March 1960, two weeks AFTER Class 42 ‘Warship’ diesel-hydraulic D817 ‘FOXHOUND’ had been released to traffic – both the new and old forms of traction had been built alongside one-another! Fifty-five years later, the subject Class 66 was the last of the type to be delivered (built in the USA in 2015), so it was given the name ‘EVENING STAR‘ and painted in lined Brunswick Green livery by GB Railfreight in recognition of being the last of the line.

An update on the WSRA Christmas Prize Draw – for the restoration of BR 2-6-4T 80064

The West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA) is one of the charities that play a major part in supporting the WSR and is constantly engaged in fundraising for causes that will ultimately benefit the WSR. This year, it is the restoration of BR 2-6-4T 80064 that is at the top of the list and a PRIZE DRAW has been organised based on a wide range of prizes that have been donated by local businesses, members and supporters. The tickets are priced at £2 each and have been selling like hot cakes, but restoring a ‘Standard 4 Tank‘ is no trivial undertaking, so let’s wish the WSRA all the best and try and give them some help and support as well !

The draw closes on 15th December so ACT NOW to get your tickets and be involved in the draw, and in doing so support the WSRA and the WSR.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026 – the following major events have been confirmed by the WSR, and the dates for a wide range of special services have also been announced – see the WSR Events Page for details and dates.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– despite the poor weather during the morning of Saturday 6th December, the preparations were made for the release of the ‘B’ bogie from No. 3 road outside the shed and its move to No 2 road INSIDE the shed, which took place later that same day !

This immediately put a smile on Gordon’s face, as he and his fellow team members had to work around the deteriorating weather over the past few weeks. The team will now be able to apply their resources to the task of getting the bogie frame ready for Non-Destructive Testing so that we can get it painted and then start building the bogie up again.

While the shunt was taking place, the team kept out of the way and concentrated on other parts such as the brake cylinders. Colin F took the opportunity to make special tools to assist with the overhaul of the engine water pumps, so it was a busy day all round !

Class 08 08401 (D3516) – the planning for the conversion to dual braking is underway, and the sourcing of the required parts is ongoing. As already reported, this loco was moved from No 1 road to No 2 road last Saturday, to make it easier to access the underside of the loco so that measurements can be taken to support the planning (this road has a concrete pad around it and between the rails).

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – as already covered, this loco was used for secondman shunting training on Saturday 6th December.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is stabled at Williton so that her planned maintenance work can be continued while outdoors. When the shed is available, she will move indoors so that her leaking engine room roof can be removed and repaired.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is now based at Bishops Lydeard where she will remain ‘on duty’ in support of the Christmas seasonal steam-hauled services. She is rostered for use on Saturday 7th December for night driver training, during which she will operate between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead under cover of darkness !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is stabled on number 1 road at Williton and is receiving some light maintenance and undergoing internal cleaning. The engine was run up on Saturday 29th November to keep her in good condition and to exercise her systems.

D7017 – while out of use during the winter season, the opportunity is being taken to attend to some of the smaller maintenance tasks – such as resolving an air leak on the speed control valve that sits underneath the driver’s power handle. Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is currently based at Loughborough on the Great Central Railway and will remain there until the end of April 2026. The GCR will be using the loco for their NIGHTRIDER event on New Year’s Eve and also for their Diesel Gala in April. Please do try and go along to one or both of these events to show your support for D7018 and help ensure that her visit is a big success !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was stabled at Loughborough on a very wet Sunday 7th December 2025 with Class 37 37714 (D6724, 37024) ‘Cardiff Canton’ and a Class 47 (possibly 1705 ‘Sparrowhawk’) also in the lineup. Class 33 D6535 (33116) on the adjacent running line was at the tail of a ‘Santa Special’ that was about to be hauled to Leicester North by BR(W) 4-6-0 6990 ‘Witherslack Hall’ and will be diesel-hauled on the return leg. Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is now based at Bishops Lydeard where she will remain throughout the winter to cover for Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019). This loco was in use on Saturday 6th December to assist the rostered steam loco on the climb to Crowcombe Heathfield with the first train of the day, to aid with timekeeping.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and we hope that she will be rostered to assist with some of the Christmas Specials, to help keep her in good operating condition. DEPG volunteer Viv Jones has brought our attention to the new Channel 4 series ‘STEAM TRAIN DIARIES’ in which ‘NORTH STAR‘ makes an appearance in the THIRD and fourth episodes, substituting for a steam loco during the period of high fire risk, earlier this year.

ON SHED – last week, we featured a photo of Class 45 ‘Peak’ D124 (45131) at an ‘unknown location’ and we received the biggest response yet, all with the same opinion, so we will go with the flow and state BRISTOL TEMPLE MEADS STATION as being the location. The FIRST PRIZE (!) goes to long-time DEPG member Neville Sloper who answered within minutes of the Roundup being transmitted ! For his sins, he was asked to provide the material for this week’s feature and we include his two photos further below.

We received too many responses to provide them all in detail, but here are some extracts from some of the responses that combine to give a fairly complete picture:

From Neville Sloper: “The photo of D124 in December 5th roundup is the north end of Bristol Temple Meads. The semaphore signal above the loco is in the adjacent goods yard.”

From Paul Mear: “The photo of D124/45131 about 1968 has got to be the north end of Bristol Temple Meads station. As has been suggested the 45 will be taking over from a diesel hydraulic on a South West – North East service. Another comment is whilst we agree that the photo is likely to be taken 1968, prior to 12/69 it was possible for Bristol-Gloucester trains to take the now closed route via Fishponds.”

From Don Bishop: “This is the north end of Bristol Temple Meads station. The loco is waiting on the loco spur there, probably to take over a North East bound service from a diesel hydraulic. The city scape background and the lower quadrant semaphore signal behind indicate a Western Region location and the elevated location with a city scape behind is (was – now changed a lot!) quite familiar.”

From Neale Long: “I think that the fine picture of D124 is taken at Bristol TM – I looked up 1968 on The Diadem Files website and found one reference to 1V62 being the 0705 Leicester-Paignton.”

From Bob Meanley: “Re the pic of D124, it looks to me to be the north end of Bristol Temple Meads from what I remember back in those days. It has been quite a while since Bristol looked like this photo, particularly the background. Obviously anything 1V** was southbound from Birmingham to the WR, Northbound would have been 1E** or 1M** depending on how far it was going. The signal in the background, I think, puts this view prior to the inauguration of the Bristol MAS scheme in 1969? It is quite probably associated with the goods lines coming from TM Goods or the docks.”

From Viv Jones: “Regarding the photo of D124, this is loco is on the approach to Bristol Temple Meads, platform 5 or 7 (on the Lawrence Hill end of BTM). The loco would have come off Bath Road shed and then after reversing at the signal gantry on the way to Dr Days junction, it would be backing onto a South West to North of England train. This would be after removal of a ‘Western’ or ‘Warship’ which would have brought the train up from Devon.

Many hours were spent by me and my brothers at Bristol TM in 1969/70 observing these loco changes which also happened in reverse at platform 12 when a Peak would be replaced by a Western (and sometimes a Warship) and they would then reverse to go back to Bath Road shed underneath the A4 road bridge on the west depot side of BTM. I think this swapping locos practice was inherited from steam days when a Jubilee would swap to a GWR loco. It was great to see the coupling and uncoupling going on, and the movements to and from Bath Road shed of the locos concerned. It was a pity (ed: only from the spotters point of view LOL) when the practice stopped and Peaks were allowed to continue to the South West, and the occasional Western went to Birmingham.

I recall a Sunday in October 1969 when a ‘Peak’ was not available and 1024 ‘WESTERN HUNTSMAN’ continued from the South West to Birmingham via Fishponds, Mangotsfield and Westerleigh. A lot of the trains then were half maroon coaches and half blue and grey/white coaches. They were often packed, despite 12 coaches, and coming back from Cheltenham to Bristol we had to sit on the floor in the corridor, whilst pulled by a Brush Type 4 (later known as class 47).”

And finally, some more from Don Bishop along with an image taken from the book ‘GWR PRINCIPAL STATIONS‘ by Colin G. Maggs and reproduced below:

Don writes: “I’ve managed to dig out a plan of Bristol Temple Meads, as published in the book – GWR Principal Stations by Colin G. Maggs, that shows the track plan in 1935, but it was substantially unaltered in the area and period we are interested in. I’ve marked where the Peak in the image you published was sitting, which may help with any explanations.”

Many thanks to David for sharing his photos with us all and to EVERYONE who responded and provided their opinions. Sorry that we couldn’t reproduce them all.

REVISED CAPTION: Class 45 ‘Peak’ D124 (45131) is reversing toward the bay at the end of Platform 7 of Bristol Temple Meads Station to await her next North East-bound duty, within a few weeks of her repaint into BR Blue, so probably in late September 1968. It would appear that the loco previously worked the 1V62 0705 Leicester to Paignton service as far as Temple Meads, where a diesel hydraulic would have taken over. And now for Neville’s photos and his accompanying text: “Thursday 5th April 1981, I was learning Class 50s and we took 50014 ‘Warspite’ for a trip from Saltley to Stratford-on-Avon. Seen here at Earlswood. Also seen on shed at Saltley with 56085 the same week.”

The first of the WSR‘s 2025 Christmas Season ‘SANTA EXPRESS‘ specials will depart from Bishops Lydeard tomorrow 6th December at 11:00 with a steam loco at the head and our Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 assisting from the rear on the climb to Crowcombe Heathefield. The diesel is being employed on the first train of the day as ‘insurance’ in case of slippery railhead conditions that might otherwise result in delays to the timetable. On Sunday, two steam locos are rostered for use (one on the ‘Santa’ and the other on the ‘QB’ dining train) so one will assist the other in the same manner.

The Christmas Specials are booking up quite quickly, so if you are thinking of supporting the WSR while simultaneously getting into the Christmas spirit, then click on this link or the image below to go to the WSR‘s events page and book your place while you have some choice remaining. The WSR image below is dated 2nd December, so availability will have tightened since it was produced.

Following the successful visit of the ‘Inspiration‘ travelling exhibition train to the WSR last week, thanks go out to GWR for arranging shuttle services between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard stations on the Tuesday and Friday. These trains make the WSR so much more accessible, we really hope that they can be operated at other times, particularly during WSR gala events where they would make a big difference to the number of rail-orientated visitors who would travel by train from further afield.

WSRA Christmas Prize Draw – for the restoration of BR 2-6-4T 80064

The West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA) is the charity that supports the WSR and is constantly engaged in fundraising for relevant and worthy causes.

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) was used to shunt BR ‘Standard 4 Tank’ 2-6-4T 80064 from the WS Restorations ‘Swindon Shed’ to the North Yard at Williton on Saturday 27th April 2024. THE FLOCKTON FLYER:

Something else that has been brought to our attention is the re-screening of the ‘FLOCKTON FLYER‘ TV series on Talking Pictures TV (Freeview or Youview channel 82, Sky 328, Virgin 445, Freesat 306). Although intended as a children’s TV series, the location being the WSR and the period being 1976/77 provides a very interesting portrayal of the early days of the WSR, including an appearance by Park Royal Class 103 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) set P200 that was repainted in blue on one side only to make an appearance in the series !

Here are a few photos taken from that most excellent resource wsr.org.uk:

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026 – the following events have been confirmed by the WSR, with more details to follow as soon as hire contracts have been finalised:

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the continuing inclement weather at Williton kept the focus of the work on the various parts that needed cleaning, inspecting and painting, there being enough of these in progress to keep the team busy for several weeks !

The plan is to shunt the yard on Saturday 6th December (weather permitting) to get at least one of the bogies inside the loco shed so that work can proceed regardless of the weather. Repositioning the engines has to wait until two ‘moons’ align, one being the need to have a crane on site, which will now be some time in January, and the other being the need to have the WSR‘s 7-tonne Fork Lift Truck available and ‘in ticket’ to reposition the engines once they have been lifted from the boiler trolley and lowered onto their stands at ground level.

Meanwhile, after completing the fabrication of a towbar intended for use when moving D1010‘s bogies around the shed, Colin F and Reece turned their attention to the water pumps with a view to overhauling them while the engines are not available to work on, and will continue their preparations by obtaining or making the special tools that are needed for the work ahead.

Colin F trial fits the newly-fabricated towbar to the Linde Fork Lift Truck – the towbar was made by Colin F and Reece and will be used when moving D1010‘s bogies around the loco shed. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 22nd November 2025 by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 08 08401 (D3516) – the ‘spare’ vacuum exhauster was prepared for testing and powered up via the ‘test’ set of batteries that are no longer fit for loco use, via appropriate switchgear to ensure safe operation. The machine ran as expected with no issues, so this major item is now ‘good to go’.

The first draft of the plan for the conversion of this loco to dual braking has been prepared by volunteer loco manager Ian and has been shared with the WSR for their review and feedback. meanwhile, work continues on the preparation of the smaller items that will also need to be installed on the loco.

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – this loco will be in use in the afternoon of Saturday 6th December 2025 for shunting the South Yard at Williton in connection with secondmen training that is kindly being provided by DEPG member, WSR Diesel Traction Inspector and author, John Leach.

She may not get much use because all of the Christmas services are rostered for steam haulage this year, but the upside is that she will be under cover throughout the winter.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is stabled on number 1 road at Williton and is receiving some light maintenance work and internal cleaning.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is currently based at Loughborough on the Great Central Railway and will remain there until the end of April 2026. The GCR have been making good use of the loco and are able to use her during the cold season because carriage heating is being provided by their steam heating van. This has been the subject of much interest because it provides a mobile steam heating capability that can be put to use with non-boiler-fitted diesel locos or used as a static facility to pre-heat carriages before steam haulage, reducing the amount of coal being burned and shortening the number of hours that the steam locos need to be in steam.

The ‘Boiler Van’ is a converted Mark 1 brake coach (formerly type BSK) that has been stripped of passenger accommodation and the resulting space filled with water tanks, a generator and a boiler (or more accurately, a steam generator). The conversion work was done by BREL Derby in 1971 and a batch of 22 ‘Boiler Vans’ were supplied to Irish Railways where they were in regular use until 2006. Click here to read the story of sister van 3173 now preserved by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland at Inchicore, Dublin.

The generator and the boiler are fed from diesel fuel tanks that are suspended from the underframe in the centre of the vehicle. On the plus side, the vehicle can provide plenty of steam for a full day’s work, but the downside is that the loco has to haul an additional vehicle weighing over 40 tonnes.

Back in BR days, most diesel locos designated for passenger haulage were fitted with boilers from new, but they were often a source of trouble and many fell into disuse, leading to widespread passenger dissatisfaction. Stories abound of secondmen having to spend almost the entire journey in the boiler room trying to keep the boiler alight and the passengers quiet.

Note – the Class 33 was the first mixed traffic diesel loco to be built with Electric Train Heating (ETH) and never carried a boiler, unlike her Class 26 and Class 27 cousins.

For heritage diesel locos that only see limited use in cold weather, the issues associated with maintaining a boiler and the associated systems were often the justification for the removal of the facility, and few heritage diesel locos still have steam heating capability. The ‘Boiler Van’ approach addresses that shortcoming in an effective and practical way and also provides the means to warm carriages at the platform, allowing their use on non-running days as meeting places or cafes. Having the ‘Boiler Van’ equipped as a brake van negates the need for another brake vehicle in the rake, allowing all other vehicles to be dedicated to carrying passengers – cosy, warm and contented passengers !

Pictured at Loughborough Central Station on Saturday 22nd November 2025, the GCR‘s Train Heating Boiler Van (formerly Irish Railways 3178, BR BSK 34590) was evidently steaming well, but the coaches were not getting the benefit of this warmth because of a ruptured steam coupling hose ! The failure of the flexible steam hose (removed and on the platform) resulted in a massive escape of steam at Loughborough Central Station on Saturday 22nd November 2025, delaying the pre-heating of the carriages until the pipe had been replaced. Photo by Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is now based at Bishops Lydeard where she will remain throughout the winter to cover for Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019). This loco will be in use on Saturday 6th December to assist the rostered steam loco on the climb to Crowcombe Heathfield with the first train of the day. This has been found to be helpful to protect timekeeping, given the wet and slippery railhead conditions that result from the currently wet and windy weather.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and we hope that she will be rostered to assist with some of the Christmas Specials, to help keep her in good operating condition. DEPG volunteer Viv Jones has brought our attention to the new Channel 4 series ‘STEAM TRAIN DIARIES’ in which ‘NORTH STAR‘ makes an appearance in the THIRD episode, substituting for a steam loco during the period of high fire risk, earlier this year. Click this link or the image below for detailsMANY THANKS to Viv for letting us know about this TV coverage.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is stabled outdoors on Number 3 road at Williton and is fully serviceable, and has been used several times during the last few weeks to move locos around the yard.

ON SHED – this week, we feature the first of many photos that have been recovered from slides by DEPG member David Hingston. Some detective work is necessary to identify some of the locations, so the quickest and easiest way to do that is to include them in this feature and let our wise and learned readers respond with their opinions via email or by using our CONTACT FORM. The countdown has begun !

In this slide, Class 45 ‘Peak’ D124 (45131) is in a location that is slightly elevated and has a mixture of colour-light and semaphore signalling. Where is this ? Having a freshly outshopped appearance in BR-blue, vacuum braked and displaying a headcode, the year is likely to be 1968.

This loco was built at Crewe Works and entered service in Derby as D124 on 21st October 1961, becoming 45131 after conversion from steam to electric train heating in June of 1974. The loco worked for almost 25 years before being withdrawn on 30th September 1986 and was reduced to scrap metal at Vic Berry’s yard by August of 1988.

Many thanks to David for sharing his photos with us all.

In this scan of a colour slide, Class 45 ‘Peak’ D124 (45131) is in an unknown location, probably in 1968 and possibly on a south-west to north-east cross-country working. Can you help identify this location ? Photo by David Hingston © CC BY-NC 4.0

Please continue to send in your photos of locos on shed, at the platform or in action, because we appreciate them all, any Class, any place, any time, the more varied, the better. Use our CONTACT FORM to get in touch. Thanks !

  • Weekly Roundup – 28-Nov-25

Despite the dismal weather, Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 (and the GCR Steam Van) delighted the passengers aboard Steve Fulcher’s charter special on the Great Central Railway on Saturday 22nd November 2025. The loco was pictured passing Swithland Sidings Signal Box, photo by Andrew Royle © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 entertained for six round trips of the GCR line on Saturday 22nd November 2025, the first departing from Loughborough at 10:30 and the last arriving back at Loughborough at 21:06. The steam van was evidently working overtime ! Photo by Dave Hewell © CC BY-NC 4.0

The more hardy sort were gathered around D7018 at Leicester North for a group photo on Saturday 22nd November 2025, before getting back into the warm Mk 1 coaching stock for the last leg of the journey at the end of a very successful day. Photo by Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 4.0

CONGRATULATIONS to DEPG member STEVE FULCHER on the success of his D7018 charter on the Great Central Railway last Saturday 22nd November, which went ahead despite the awful weather, using the GCR‘s Steam Heating Van in the consist to provide copious amounts of steam to keep the carriages warm and the passengers happy.

D7018 performed faultlessly after being carefully prepared by DEPG Trustees Paul Tucker and Martin Howard the previous day, when a minor coolant leak was dealt with and the anti-freeze strength was topped up to protect the loco from the cold weather ahead. DEPG funds benefited from the use of the loco plus Julie Tucker’s efforts to sell DEPG merchandise on the train (against stiff competition from he who shall not be named but represents a well-known group that has three ‘Westerns’ in their care), the icing on the cake being a share of the proceeds from the on-train raffle and the winner donating his cash prize to the DEPG (thank you Neville) !

The event was captured ‘on film’ by Martin Hawksby for his HELLFIRE TV YouTube channel, and his very interesting promotional video whets the appetite and definitely leaves us wanting more ! Click here or on the image above to view the compilation of video clips via his public Facebook channel (available to those who ‘don’t do Facebook’ – just close (or escape) from the Facebook pop-ups and you will get to the video). WELL DONE to STEVE and for everyone involved in delivering this very successful event. Hopefully, it will be the first of many such ‘Hymek’ charters on this and other lines!

Last Saturday was a very busy day all round because FOUR DEPG locos were in use, with D7018 on the GCR as already reported but back home on the WSR …

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026 – we can now advise that the following events have been confirmed by the WSR, with more details to follow as soon as hire contracts have been finalised:

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the dismal weather at Williton last Saturday split the team in three directions, with some volunteers braving the elements to work on the ‘A’ bogie, some volunteers going underneath D1010‘s body out in the yard to prepare the underframe for painting, and some volunteers working on tasks associated with the need to unload the engines from the boiler trolley upon which they have been mounted since July 2024.

The plan is to shunt the yard on Saturday 6th December to get at least one of the bogies inside the loco shed so that work can proceed regardless of the weather. Repositioning the engines will have to wait until we have crane on site, probably in January, but that is not far away in terms of working days.

Class 08 08401 (D3516) – the ‘spare’ vacuum exhauster was cleaned up and inspected, then painted and re-assembled onto the mounting beam that also forms the vacuum reservoir. The next step is to apply power and test the exhauster to make sure that it is fully functional before installing it on the loco. The plan for the conversion to dual braking is quite complex and has to be approved by several parties to ensure that the work is done in a compliant way. Volunteer loco manager Ian is leading this effort.

08401 (D3516) – the three main components of the Westinghouse vacuum exhauster were reassembled at Williton on Saturday 22nd November 2025, with volunteers (L-R) Ethan W, Neil C and Charlie heavily involved. Class 14 D9518 (NCB No. 7) dominates the background. Photo by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – this loco has now arrived at Williton so that she can receive attention to bodywork corrosion around the cab roof and bonnet. Having the loco available at the yard is quite convenient for studying the layout of her dual braking equipment, as can be seen in this photo which shows the vacuum exhauster installation.

D4107 (09019) – Ian R and Neil C examine the Westinghouse vacuum exhauster installation to learn as much as they can before copying the installation over to 08401 (D3516). Photo by Terry Deacon © CC BY-NC 4.0

She may not get much use because all of the Christmas services are rostered for steam haulage this year, but the upside is that she will be under cover throughout the winter.

D6575 (33057) is now based at Bishops Lydeard along with Class 14 D9526. Both will provide support to the WSR over the winter and will stay under cover as part of the bargain. Pictured on Wednesday 26th November 2025 by Paul Fleet © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is stabled on number 1 road at Williton and will undergo some light maintenance work and internal cleaning.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is currently based at Loughborough on the Great Central Railway and will remain there until the end of April 2026. The GCR have been making good use of the loco while she is in their hands, with local support being provided by DEPG Treasurer Paul Tucker, who happens to live very near to where the loco is stabled.

Here are the remaining running dates:

    Day and Date Event Notes

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work was paused because of the need to support sister loco D9526 and relocate her to Bishops Lydeard. The team will be back at work on D9518 as soon as possible.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and we hope that she will be rostered to assist with some of the Christmas Specials, to help keep her in good operating condition. ON SHED – this week, our attention shifts back to Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 and her arrival at Taunton from Old Oak Common on 30th July 1975, more than FIFTY YEARS AGO, to start her new life with the D+EG (predecessor of the DEPG). Thanks to information received from Glyn Newing, we have become aware of some very interesting (but very short) footage of D7017 that he found on the marvellous British Film Institute archive site, showing the condition of the loco in the weeks or months after her arrival at Taunton. Click here or on the image below to view this 50-year-old footage.

This 50-year-old film footage shows D7017 at Taunton some time between July 1975 and March 1976, waiting for the fledgling WSR to open and allow her to move to Minehead along with industrial steam locos ‘VICTOR’ and ‘VULCAN’. The move eventually took place on 26th March 1976. Video courtesy of the British Film Institute.

Many thanks to Glyn Newing for bringing this to our attention.

JOIN US using whichever membership class is appropriate for your situation and means. CLICK HERE or on the image below or use the QR code to get the details.

If you would like to go one step further and come along to help with the work on the locos in our fleet, then please use our CONTACT FORM to let us know that you would like to volunteer and we will respond with more details.

We look forward to hearing from you !
