The DEPG’s WSR-based fleet of locos enjoyed a rest for the full four days of the WSR’s SPRING STEAM SPECTACULAR gala event although it did look at times as if the diesels would have to step in to help reduce the number of lineside fires. The tinder-dry embankments were being set alight by some of the smaller locomotives that needed to be worked harder and therefore ejected more in the way of hot cinders. Luckily, the infrastructure team were on hand to follow the worst culprits along the route, dousing the fires while they were still small.

When one of the visiting steam locos had to be stood down due to technical issues, our crews prepared themselves for duty, but the WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) was instead pressed into action and worked for the final two days of the gala, adding to the event by providing authentic branch-line scenes from the 1960s such as below:

A completely different story was playing out in another part of the country as the dry weather and harder-to-access landscapes of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) forced a complete ban on steam, so the line has had to be worked by diesel for most of April and so far, all of May. Our Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ has been in use on an almost-daily basis, in support of the other diesels on the line, providing a treat for fans of the BR-blue era, with the rare exception as below:.

47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ was waiting at Levisham as the unique 1903-built NER ‘autocar’ 3170 approached with a train from Grosmont on Sunday 27th April 2025. Photo by Glyn Warren © CC BY-NC 3.0

Casting back to the previous weekend, the East Lancashire Railway held a diesel event with a Western Region theme, with the sound of ‘Maybach Music’ resonating far and wide. In action along with ‘Warship’ D832 ‘ONSLAUGHT’ and ‘Hymek’ D7076 were Class 45 ‘Peak’ 45108 (D120) and Class 50 50015 (D415) ‘Valiant’ the latter two of which will soon be welcomed as guests to the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL that is rapidly approaching and is now less than four weeks away !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7076 was pictured at Ramsbottom with a service to Rawtenstall on Saturday 26th April 2025 with headcode ‘IC96’ … perhaps a tribute to sister D7096 who donated the key parts needed to make D7076 a runner. Photo by Neale Long © CC BY-NC 3.0

    DIESEL RUNNING ON THE WSR

Our Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) will be working the Minehead diagram of the BLUE timetable on Saturday 10th and again on Sunday 11th May, offering 80 miles of diesel loco haulage per day. We might also be able to have one of our other fleet members out on test on the Saturday, so please do try to come along and enjoy the diesel action.

From now until the end of September, the DEPG’s Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ and Class 35 ‘Hymeks’ are booked to cover 34 of the 80-mile diagrams that originate from Minehead under the BLUE timetable so we are going to be kept busy ! The YELLOW timetable in the peak of the season will also see appearances by Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526, fresh from the repaint that is taking place at Williton at the moment. The recent announcement of the visit by the ‘FLYING SCOTSMAN‘ is going to have an impact because several diesel-loco-hauled services have stepped aside to allow the famous loco to maximise her earning potential, but this is in the interest of the railway and we will need to flex to accommodate this. Our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page provides the information about upcoming diesel-hauled services on the WSRClick here or on the image below for details:

Just a reminder – our two ‘Hymeks’ D7017 and D7018 are celebrating their 50th year in preservation, with both locos being among the last four of the Class to be withdrawn from service by BR in March 1975. The WSR have kindly agreed to allocate the weekend of August 30th and 31st to showcase the ‘Hymeks’ and we hope to have both locos available for service for that mixed traction event. Please keep the date free and make plans to come along. We will announce the timetable as soon as possible, but it will be based on the BLUE timetable (not yellow as previously advised) that can be reached by clicking on the appropriate days in the WSR timetable (click here or on the graphic below):

Read more about the history of the DEPG and the long association with the ‘Hymeks’ on our ABOUT US pages.

The WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL will take place from Thursday 5th through Saturday 7th June with a Mixed Traction Day on Sunday 8th. The first three of the visiting locos have been announced and they are D1015 ‘WESTERN CHAMPION’, Class 45/1 ‘Peak’ 45108 and Class 50 50015 ‘Valiant’ so MAKE YOUR PLANS TO ATTEND and click on the images below to learn more. It is going to be a GREAT event !

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – this loco was open to visitors on all four days of the recent SPRING STEAM SPECTACULAR event and was a popular attraction, even more so now that she is off her bogies and mounted on stands at the north end of our yard. This provides a unique viewing opportunity, and many interesting discussions were had about the design of the underframe and the stressed skin construction, subjects that would not normally be raised during a ‘conventional’ viewing.

D1010‘s two mighty Bristol Siddeley Maybach MD655 engines also attracted interest, as they are temporarily mounted side by side on a steam boiler trolley in our shed, and are quite a sight !

D1010‘s two serviceable MD655 engines were on display in the loco shed at Williton and made quite a sight as they are mounted above ground level – on a steam boiler trolley. Pictured on Monday 5th May 2025 with D9526 behind by Malcolm Anderson © CC BY-NC 3.0

Our appeals for MORE VOLUNTEERS are working but WE STILL NEED MORE HELP to get this huge loco back on the rails, so please get in touch by using our CONTACT FORM if you are able to join the team.

As mentioned before, apologies to those D1010 sponsors who have yet to receive the photos and certificates for the patches that they have sponsored. With two gala events coming up, we will be engraving the patches during the open days and will soon catch up – and hopefully attract some additional sponsorship !

Rest assured that every sponsor will receive their certificate and the details of where to find their sponsored patch. We will be making a further push for funds soon, because we have some big ticket items for refurbishment, including the remaining cardan shafts and 32 springs from the suspension system.

MANY THANKS to all who have sponsored and supported the RESTORATION of D1010 !

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – outstationed at Bishops Lydeard in support of WSR operations.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – the cab of this loco was on display to the public on Monday of the open weekend and we are grateful to young volunteer Ethan T for manning the cab and explaining the layout and controls to the interested visitors.

THIS LOCO WILL BE HEADING FOR THE SPA VALLEY RAILWAY for the weekend of 13th to the 15th June 2025 to participate in their ‘Cuckoo Line Gala’ event !

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is now outstationed at Minehead as the ‘duty loco’, ready and waiting to be called upon at short notice. This loco is rostered to work the first diesel loco-hauled services of the season on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May – see our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page for details.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – the pace of work is hotting up as the gala looms into sight and provides additional impetus to get the job completed. Volunteers from the DEPG have been working alongside the WSR staff in a number of areas, with the cabs given a fresh coat of paint by Graham last weekend – the results being up to his usual high standard. Thank you, Graham !

D7017 – the newly-repainted cabs offer a major improvement for the crews and really make a difference to the presentation of this loco. Pictured at Minehead on Saturday 3rd May 2025 by Neil McCannon © CC BY-NC 3.0

Elsewhere on the loco, the WSR team comprising Buzz (welding) and Harry (painting) are handling the bodywork repairs and carefully preparing the loco for a complete repaint. Thank you, guys !

D7017 – work proceeds apace at Minehead, as evidenced by these photos, all taken on Saturday 3rd May 2025 by Neil McCannon © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco underwent another session of ‘yard exercise’ at Williton on Tuesday 29th April 2025 and everything went well, so permission has now been obtained for a test run from Williton to Bishops Lydeard, then to Minehead, then back to Williton with Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) tagging along for ‘insurance’. This test run might take place on Saturday 10th May if circumstances allow. The loco has been wired up with sensors and a datalogger so that the correct performance of the transmission can be verified and the evidence gathered in support of her release to traffic, which is not too far away now.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the need to prepare sister D9526 for her period of occupation of the loco shed has drawn resources away from D9518 temporarily, but work continues on the electrical rewiring and on the restoration of the many component parts.

Quality work needs to be funded, so we will continue to appeal for funds to support the work, right up to the point where the loco is completed. Any surplus will then be used to ensure her proper care and upkeep. If you like what we are doing, please make a donation via our website (click on the icon below) or by bank app or by sending a cheque to the DEPG at WillitonTHANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – preparations for the ‘open shed’ event and the subsequent restrictions on the type of work that could be carried out during the event caused a curtailment of the work on this loco, but some engine work was progressed without making noise or mess. Progress continued to be made on the bodywork with the side panels being repainted off site and free from restrictions. We look forward to having this loco outshopped in pristine condition in time for her appearance at the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL 2025.

D9526 – the engine block has been prepared for the refitting of the cylinder heads, with new seals and gaskets at the ready and aimed at reducing the amount of oil leakage. Pictured at Williton on Tuesday 29th April 2025 by Terry Deacon © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – as previously stated, this loco is based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and has been out and about on most days in the last four weeks because the NYMR has had to switch to a diesel-hauled service in the face of an elevated lineside fire risk. Luckily, ‘NORTH STAR’ is performing well and is able to share in the increased diesel fleet workload, much to the obvious delight of the DEPG Treasurer.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is available for service as required.

If you can help by donating your time to any of these projects, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

BOOK REVIEW: This week, we have a NEW BOOK entitled ABSOLUTELY WESTERNS and published TODAY (Friday 9th May 2025) by Totem Publishing and compiled by Roger Geach from photos taken by the late Peter Crawley. Here’s the publisher’s write up on their newest book:

“The Western Region’s mighty Class 52 locomotives left an enduring legacy, captivating rail enthusiasts across the country. In ‘Absolutely Westerns’, the late Peter Crawley’s passion for these legendary machines is brought to life through his rare and evocative photographs.

Compiled and expanded with detailed captions and additional research, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the final years of the Westerns, from their workings on the Swansea to Leeds service to memorable moments at Plymouth, Reading, and Dawlish. Featuring insights into the excursions and railtours of the era, this is an essential read for those who fondly remember the Westerns and the golden age of British Rail.

A long-awaited publication, this book stands as a fitting tribute to Peter Crawley and the enthusiasts who dedicated themselves to documenting these iconic locomotives.”

ON SHED: not on shed on 13th August 1970 but definitely on the move was another product of the North British Locomotive Company, this time one of a batch of 33 ‘Warships’ made to the BR-Swindon design but with NBL-MAN engines and NBL-Voith transmissions as an alternative to the Bristol Siddeley Maybach engines and Stone-Mekydro transmissions that were installed in the batch of 38 Swindon-built machines (designated Class 42).

The Glasgow-built machines (designated Class 43) were early targets for the campaign of standardisation and rationalisation that swept through the BR diesel locomotive fleet from the late 1960s onwards. Being only 33 in number and differing from their Swindon counterparts in so many ways, they never achieved their full potential and ended up being banned from some routes such as Waterloo-Exeter because of their chronic unreliability.

Luckily, DEPG member Andy Galpin caught this one in action at Didcot as it led the 1A37 express passenger service towards the capital. What was the 1A37 service ? If anyone can provide more information, we will gladly share it in a future roundup.

Many thanks to Andy for sharing his photos with us all.

If you have photos that you would like to share, please let us know via contact@depg.org and we will happily include them in future editions.

DEPG NEWS – after the success of the WSR’s Spring Steam Spectacular where we opened our yard and shed to welcome the gala visitors on each of the four days of the event, we are now preparing for our next major event which will be the SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL where we will again be open to the public for the three gala days and also for the mixed traction Sunday.

The very popular model railway trader ROD SAUNDERS will have his sales stand in our shed at Williton and we will also have our own sales stand in operation with new merchandise and many other attractions and facilities such as tea, coffee and hot snacks, but all of this takes organising and we will be short of ‘boots on the ground’ because so many of our volunteers will be crewing locos. We need help to prepare our locos including such basic but essential activities as WASHING AND POLISHING !

CAN YOU HELP ? WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH DEPOT DUTIES AND SALES ! If you can help, please use our CONTACT FORM and let us know. Thanks in advance !

The DEPG is a charity and is run entirely by volunteers, many of whom give both their time and their money to the continuance of work on the locos in the DEPG fleet. If you have been enjoying the roundup for free, have you considered joining us for just £1 a month ? You can then add your name to all of those helping out on the above projects and play your part in the future of our locos for a lot less than the price of a cup of coffee!

JOIN US using whichever membership class is appropriate for your situation and means. CLICK HERE or on the image below or use the QR code to get the details.

If you would like to go one step further and come along to help with the work on the locos in our fleet, then please use our CONTACT FORM to let us know that you would like to volunteer and we will respond with more details.

We look forward to hearing from you !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was back at Williton when pictured on Saturday 26th April, after passing her air system safety examination with flying colours. The DEPG’s entire WSR-based fleet of locos underwent air system examinations during the period Tuesday 22nd through Thursday 24th April with subcontract examiner MATT HIGHAM visiting Williton, Minehead and Bishops Lydeard to perform the examinations and test the safety valves that protect the air systems from excessive pressure. Matt’s work covered Class 14s D9518 and D9526 along with Barclay 578 (ROF1) at Williton on Tuesday, then he moved to Minehead where Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 had been positioned over the pit for her air receivers to be examined.

The following day, it was the turn of Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ D6566 (33048) and D6575 (33057) at Minehead, then ‘Hymek’ D7017 who was conveniently already over a pit in the loco shed where she was undergoing her bodywork overhaul. On the Thursday, Matt was back at Williton to assess the air receivers on Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ and then his final task before heading home to Derbyshire was to attend at Bishops Lydeard to examine Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019)

Some remedial work requirements were identified on ‘Hymek’ D7017, D6566 (33048) and Barclay 578 (ROF 1), but all of the locos were considered as safe and the remedial work will be carried out over the next few weeks, before Matt returns for final sign-off and to examine the WSR’s Class 03 shunter D2133 and Barclay 579 (ROF 2). MANY THANKS to Matt of HIGHAM’S HERITAGE ENGINEERING for his hard work and adaptability !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 was already over an indoor pit at Minehead, which was handy because she was not fit to be moved outdoors, her roof having been removed for restoration. D7017 – removing the many layers of paint revealed the manufacturing date as being 17th March 1961 but the tank is still in good condition and fit for many more years of service. Most of the air receivers (tanks) on a ‘Hymek’ are positioned under the frame and are very difficult to access. Pictured at Minehead on Wednesday 23rd April 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

SATURDAY 10th MAY: NOT A HST RUNNING DAY

Apologies, but the ex-GWR ‘Castle’ class HST that is being stored at Minehead will NOT be in use on the WSR on Saturday 10th May. This is because it has not been possible to make the necessary safety arrangements and complete the maintenance activities in time, despite the very best efforts of many individuals both within the railway and from the external organisations involved with the HST, all of which have been much appreciated.

Apologies to HST fans for this cancellation. We will provide further information about possible future running days as soon as the situation is clarified.

Our Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) will be working the Minehead diagram of the BLUE timetable on the 10th May, offering 80 miles of diesel loco haulage. We might also be able to have one of our other fleet members out on test that day, so please do try to come along and enjoy the diesel action.

    EVENTS ON THE WSR

The WSR’s SPRING STEAM SPECTACULAR runs from Friday 2nd May through Monday 5th May and features an intensive steam-only timetable with a whole host of visiting locomotives, both large and small. The DEPG loco depot at Williton will be OPEN TO THE PUBLIC on all four days of the gala and we will have our sales stand operating alongside ROD’S MODEL RAILWAY SALES stand as usual. We will also have the mobile catering van ‘Irie 7‘ in our yard again, offering hot snacks and drinks, and hopefully repeating the success of last year when visitors chose to stay a while at Williton and enjoy some hot food while watching the proceedings from our lineside viewing area. This event does prevent us from working on our locomotives for one weekend, but it provides an additional attraction for the gala as well as being an important annual fund-raising opportunity for the DEPG.

From Saturday 10th May through to the end of September, the DEPG’s Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ and Class 35 ‘Hymeks’ are booked to cover 34 of the 80-mile diagrams that originate from Minehead under the BLUE timetable so we are going to be kept busy ! The YELLOW timetable in the peak of the season will also see appearances by Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526, fresh from the repaint that is taking place at Williton at the moment. The recent announcement of the visit by the ‘FLYING SCOTSMAN‘ is going to have an impact because several diesel-loco-hauled services will have to be moved to other dates to allow the famous loco to maximise her earning potential, but this is in the interest of the railway and we will need to flex to accommodate this.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – the focus being placed on the need to get our two ‘Hymeks’ back into traffic for their 50th anniversary year has drawn resources away from D1010, but this is only temporary and the focus will swing back onto D1010 after the diesel gala so that we can get the bogies overhauled and get the loco back on her feet. Meanwhile, the underframe cleanup and the background work on the sourcing of the replacement parts continue to make their unseen progress.

The cooler group from ‘A’ end was turned to the upright position on Saturday 26th so that the work on this assembly can be completed and a hydraulic test carried out.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – work is proceeding on several fronts, with the WSR’s resident welder Buzz making good progress on replacing the corroded metalwork while WSR painter Harry works on sanding and preparing the loco for a full repaint. In parallel, Neil is working on the door frames and fittings while Graham tackles the cab interiors and Jeffrey tackles the roof sections.

The work on both ‘Hymeks’ is scheduled to be completed a few weeks before the diesel gala, so we are working on two parallel paths for risk mitigation.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco was towed (dead) back to Williton from Minehead by Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) on Wednesday 23rd April after successfully completing her air receiver and air safety examinations. Some ‘yard exercise’ is planned at Williton to build further confidence before the loco goes out onto the WSR line for a test run. The loco is being fitted with datalogging so that the correct performance of the transmission can be verified and the evidence gathered in support of her release to traffic, which is not too far away now.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – work on this loco is absorbing most of the effort of the ‘Small Engine Division’ because of the need to get the loco completed and tested before the end of May. The engine work is progressing while the bodywork repairs move forward in parallel. We look forward to having this loco outshopped in pristine condition in time for her appearance at the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL 2025.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and has been out and about on most days in the last three weeks because the NYMR has had to switch to a mostly diesel-hauled service in the face of an elevated lineside fire risk. Luckily, ‘NORTH STAR’ is performing well and is able to share in the increased diesel fleet workload, much to the delight of the DEPG Treasurer.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco passed her air receiver examination but with a two year restriction on her certificate, due to the effects of corrosion. This gives us helpful advance notice of the need to work out the best way of resolving the issue without affecting the appearance of the loco.

BOOK REVIEW: The sale of books, both new and pre-owned, is a valuable source on income for the DEPG and is a growth area, especially as the search engines regularly return DEPG results on the first page, greatly increasing the chances of making a sale and boosting DEPG coffers.

We are always on the lookout for donations of pre-owned books featuring any class of diesel or electric traction. We often receive mixed donations that include steam-era books as well, but we make sure that the steam titles get passed to our colleagues in other voluntary groups around the WSR, so MANY THANKS to those who have donated and if you have books to pass on, then PLEASE KEEP DONATING !

This week, we feature ‘GREEN DIESEL DAYS‘ by Derek Huntriss, but this copy is the 2005 HARDCOVER version which has superior reproduction compared to the later softcover version. This pre-owned Ian Allan booklet is offered at the excellent price of £6.50

There are many other pre-owned book titles on our online store – click here for details.

ON SHED: last week, we featured a photo that had been shared by DEPG member Andy Galpin and depicted one of the North British Type 2 Class 22 diesel-hydraulic locomotives (click here for books about these locos) approaching Didcot with the 8A44 freight working, and we asked readers for information about the origins of this service. We hit the jackpot when DEPG member and former BR Freight Sector Manager BRIAN RINGER responded with the below:

“You asked the question in the last newsletter about the “On Shed” photo of Class 22 No. 6326 entering Didcot Yard on 8A44, what was it and where had it come from? Unfortunately I don’t have a London Division WTT for 1970 but am pretty certain that when I worked in the area, 8A44 was the morning Reading West Junction Yard to Didcot Yard local trip – known locally as the “Didcot Fly”.

It worked local freight traffic to the Didcot area and in this case the first two wagons were COVHOPS destined for Associated British Maltsters at Wallingford and would be loaded with grain. The next three tank wagons will have fuel for the local fuelling and servicing point at Didcot. Beyond that the photo isn’t clear but are probably coal wagons for the local coal merchants. The Didcot Fly returned to Reading as 8A79 1535 Didcot to Reading west Junction, with a stop at Cholsey where it shunted down the Wallingford branch to the ABM grain terminal sidings.”

Many thanks to Brian for sharing this information with us all.

If you have photos that you would like to share, please let us know via contact@depg.org and we will happily include them in future editions.

This week, we jump back to Cardiff for a view of Class 33 ‘Crompton’ 33050 (D6568) at the head of the Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour service back in June of 1985. These locos were the dominant traction on these services after displacing the Class 31s in 1980 until they were themselves displaced by the new generation Class 155 ‘Sprinters’ in May of 1988.

DEPG NEWS – we are preparing for several events this year, the first being the Spring Steam Spectacular where we will have an ‘open shed’ and welcome gala visitors who have an interest in engineering and restoration in addition to steam or diesel locos. We will have a sales stand in operation with new merchandise and many other attractions and facilities such as tea, coffee and hot snacks, but all of this takes organising and we are rushed off our feet making sure that our locos are made available for booked services. CAN YOU HELP ? WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH SALES !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 and Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) moved to Minehead on Saturday 19th April 2025 to join their sisters D6566 (33048) (just visible behind D7018) and D7017 (in the loco shed behind D6575) in readiness for air system inspections that took place the following week. The WSR’s steam stronghold at Minehead was subjected to a diesel invasion on Saturday 19th April when Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) arrived from Williton with Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 in tow. These two locos were in addition to D6566 (already at Minehead as the Duty Loco) and D7017 (in the loco shed at Minehead undergoing a bodywork overhaul and a repaint), the purpose of the gathering being to use the pit to facilitate the air system inspections that had been arranged for the following week.

When taking resident Class 03 shunter D2133 and Barclay 579 (ROF2) into account, plus the WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) plus the Class 255 ‘Castle Class’ HST (power cars 43154 and 43155) that is in storage at Minehead, we counted 8 diesel-powered locos/train sets with 12 diesel engines totalling more than 12,000 horsepower!

The next event coming up on the WSR is the SPRING STEAM SPECTACULAR which runs from Friday 2nd May through Monday 5th May and features an intensive steam-only timetable with a whole host of visiting locomotives.

ON SATURDAY 10th MAY: HST RUNNING DAY

We have been advised that the ex-GWR ‘Castle’ class HST will be in use on the WSR on Saturday 10th May.  This will involve two return trips from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard and back, calling at all stations, using the HST “Castle” class set which has been stored at Minehead for some time (power cars 43154 and 43155 plus four Mk 3 coaches).  For reasons outside the WSR’s control, the set will probably leave the railway earlier than previously anticipated, so this may be the last time for a while to experience an HST on the WSR.

On Sunday 9th June 2024, a ‘Castle’ Class HST set comprising power cars 43155 (formerly ‘Rougemont Castle’, leading) and 43154 (formerly ‘Compton Castle’, trailing) and four Mark 3 coaches made an interesting and unusual picture at Stogumber Station. Photo by Mark Ireland © CC BY-NC 3.0

On Saturday 10th May, the train will leave Minehead at 0920, returning from Bishops Lydeard at 1055, and then leave Minehead again at 1315, returning at 1505.  All standard WSR tickets and passes are valid on this train. The train will operate in addition to all other BLUE timetabled trains. We hope that as many DEPG members and supporters as possible will take this opportunity to travel on this iconic train whilst it is available to the WSR.

    D7017 UPDATE

The depth of affection for this loco has been demonstrated by the £16,572 that has been donated in a matter of months to cover the cost of bodywork repairs that will give the loco another lease of life to add to the 50 years she has already spent in preservation. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the 95 people who have donated to this project, keeping it moving forward to ensure that the loco will be back in service in time for the WSR’s Summer Diesel Festival (5-7th June).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FANTASTIC SUPPORT !

This funding will ensure that the loco gets repaired in time to be able to take pole position in the celebration of 50 years of ‘Hymek’ preservation that will take place on 30th and 31st of August this year.

The fund will remain open until the work is completed to make sure that we have sufficient funding to cover any unexpected costs, so don’t despair if you haven’t yet donated, because we can still accept your donation !

All funds donated via this appeal will be allocated to returning D7017 to service in time for the forthcoming season. Any excess will be carried over to 2026 but still allocated to D7017.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – our team are continuing their work underneath the loco, chipping away at the dirt and grime and getting closer to the point where we can start to apply some fresh paint. The underside of the loco is in very good condition and is only going to need cleaning and painting, but there is a lot of it and we are only working on the exposed surfaces at the moment. Digging 50-year-old dirt out from parts of the structure that are above one’s head is going to be more of a challenge!

After sharing images of the carefully decorated ‘A’ cooler group last week, several comments have been received, pointing out that the correct colour for the Serck hydrostatic system pipework is BROWN. The pink colour that we used is reserved for lubricating oil.  Oh well, another task goes back on the list !

The work on evaluating the many components that have been removed from the ‘B’ bogie continues in the background, with a view to creating the ‘shopping list’ of new or refurbished parts that we will need to have around us before we start the re-assembly phase. Both bogies are currently outdoors but sheeted over, while the loco shed is occupied by a pair of Class 14s. Preparation work for the dye penetrant Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) has been paused until the bogies get back into the shed, because the bare metal surfaces will quickly develop a layer of surface rust and have to be prepared again. There is a sequence of processing that must be followed.

D1010 – the ‘B’ bogie has been stripped of most of the smaller component parts and is now waiting for a chance to go back inside the loco shed to be further prepared for dye penetrant testing (crack detection). Pictured at Williton on Friday 11th April 2025 by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – this loco is now back at work and is in regular use Bishops Lydeard. The Transmission Team have been overhauling the Westinghouse compressor that was removed from D4107 last winter and are close to returning it to our spare parts store. Some o-rings are needed before the work can be considered complete and then there will be a period of testing, but so far, so good.

D4107 – the Westinghouse compressor has been reassembled and is awaiting delivery of some o-rings that will then allow the valve covers to be re-fitted, so that testing can begin. Pictured at Williton on Wednesday 16th April 2025 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco has been stabled at Minehead as the ‘Duty Loco’ but will hand over to sister D6575 (33057) and will return to Williton for planned maintenance.

THIS LOCO WILL BE HEADING FOR THE SPA VALLEY RAILWAY for the weekend of 13th to the 15th June 2025 to participate in their ‘Cuckoo Line Gala’ event !

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco was called into use at short notice on Friday 18th April to cover for a steam loco that had developed an issue and was struggling to keep time. Luckily, our volunteers were working on the loco at Williton when the call for help came through, so the response was as quick as it possibly could be, complete with DEPG driver and secondman. Very useful engines, these ‘Cromptons’.

As already reported, this loco was used to tow ‘Hymek’ D7018 to Minehead on Saturday 19th so that both ’33s’ and both ’35s’ could be positioned over the pit in turn and have their air receivers examined by subcontractor Matt Higham (to be reported upon in the next roundup).

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – the work on this loco is moving along steadily, with attention being given by the WSR welder Buzz and WSR painter Harry, with mechanical work being done by Neil and internal paintwork handled by Jeffrey and Graham. Additional resources are required to get the work back on to the timetable, the planned release date being tight but not yet out of sight – so the pressure is on to prevent further slippage !

The work on both ‘Hymeks’ is scheduled to be completed a few weeks before the diesel gala, so we are working on two parallel paths for risk mitigation.

D7017 – the bodyside steelwork below the radiator elements was beyond redemption so it has been cut out and a completely new section fabricated. Pictured at Minehead on Friday 18th April 2025 by Neil McCannon © CC BY-NC 3.0

D7017 – and as he appeared to be enjoying his work, we asked him to paint the topside as well ! Pictured at Minehead on Friday 18th April 2025 by Neil McCannon © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco was towed (dead) to Minehead by Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) on Saturday 19th April to undergo air receiver and air safety examinations during the following week. This loco has some inspection stages to be completed and will then undergo further ‘yard exercise’ at Williton before being sent out on a test run. The date and time of the test movements cannot be announced via DIESELGEN because they have to be fitted in with operational requirements and are likely to be carried out at short notice, but keep an eye on the WSR Railcams and hopefully you will get lucky.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the need to prepare sister D9526 for her period of occupation of the loco shed has drawn resources away from D9518 temporarily, but work continues on the electrical rewiring and on the restoration of component parts such as the headcode indicator boxes, which were not used at Ashington Colliery and are now in need of complete refurbishment – as the following photos show:

D9518 – the mechanism that rotates the roller blinds to display the desired headcode was found to be completely seized up after many years out of use. Pictured at Williton on 27th March 2025 by Colin Girle © CC BY-NC 3.0

D9518 – this chain was found to be corroded to the point of separation after 50+ years out of use, with obvious signs of water ingress and a complete lack of lubrication. Pictured at Williton on 27th March 2025 by Colin Girle © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – work on this loco is absorbing most of the effort of the ‘Small Engine Division’ because of the need to get the loco completed and tested before the end of May. The engine work had to take a back seat while other tasks were progressed, but the team will be back on that case next week. Meanwhile, the bodywork repairs moved forward with the engine bay doors being given their first coat of primer after being cleaned up and having the rust dealt with. We look forward to having this loco outshopped in pristine condition in time for her appearance at the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL 2025.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and has been out and about on most days in the last two weeks because the NYMR had to switch to an all-diesel service in the face of an elevated lineside fire risk. That issue was dealt with by the return to more ‘normal’ weather, but not for long ! Meanwhile, there is an impromptu ‘BR-blue’ diesel event taking place there, almost every day.

This week, we feature ‘THE LAST YEARS OF THE WESTERNS‘ by A. Wyn Hobson as an example of a book that definitely won’t sit on our shelves for very long. This pre-owned Ian Allan booklet is offered at the excellent price of £5.00

There are many other pre-owned book titles on our online store – click here for details.

ON SHED: this week, we feature a photo that has been shared by DEPG member Andy Galpin and depicts one of the North British Type 2 Class 22 diesel-hydraulic locomotives (click here for books about these locos). This loco entered service at Plymouth Laira depot on 16th May 1960 and received a repaint into BR blue in May of 1970, just a few months before this picture was taken, probably following a heavy overhaul at Swindon Works. The loco was withdrawn from service the following year.

Andy provides the following information with his photograph:

“Please bear in mind that this photo was taken on holiday by a then 14 year old with just an Instamatic, a notebook and little idea of the underlying workings. Class 22 6326 was seen at Didcot on 13th August 1970, it is coming from the Reading direction and heading off into the yards – this was one of only two Class 22s I ever saw!

‘Hymek’ D7054 was at Reading the following day, it remained in more or less the same spot and I assumed it was some sort of station pilot?  Happy Days!”

Many thanks to Andy for sharing his photo and his memories with us all.

If you have photos that you would like to share, please let us know via contact@depg.org and we will happily include them in future editions.

  • Weekly Roundup – 13-Apr-25

The WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) worked the diesel turn on Saturday 12th April 2025 and was pictured departing Williton for Minehead with (L-R) Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018, Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) and Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 (ROF1) observing. The WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) has been quite busy of late and has been covering the Minehead diesel diagrams on Saturdays and Sundays. This coming weekend includes an ENHANCED YELLOW timetable for Saturday 19th during which the DMU will work an 80-mile diagram with two steam locos on similar diagrams, resulting in six trains each way on that day. It’s such a pity that the weather has taken a serious turn for the worse, but let’s remain positive – the weather people have been known to get the forecast wrong now and then … so it might turn out to be OK !

From Saturday May 10th through to the end of September, the DEPG’s Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ and Class 35 ‘Hymeks’ are booked to cover 38 of the 80-mile diagrams that originate from Minehead under the BLUE timetable so we are going to be kept busy ! The YELLOW timetable in the peak of the season will also see appearances by Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526, fresh from the repaint that is taking at Williton at the moment.

See our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page for news of upcoming diesel-hauled services on the WSRClick here or on the image below for details:

Just a reminder – our two ‘Hymeks’ D7017 and D7018 are celebrating their 50th year in preservation, with both locos being among the last four of the Class to be withdrawn from service by BR in March 1975. The WSR have kindly agreed to allocate the weekend of August 30th and 31st to showcase the ‘Hymeks’ and we hope to have both locos available for service for that mixed traction event. Please keep the date free and make plans to come along. We will announce the timetable as soon as possible, but it will most likely be based on the YELLOW timetable that can be reached by clicking on YELLOW days in the WSR timetable (click here or on the graphic below):

    D7017 UPDATE

The depth of affection for this loco has been demonstrated by the £16,500 that has been donated in a matter of months to cover the cost of bodywork repairs that will give the loco another lease of life to add to the 50 years she has already spent in preservation. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the 92 people who have donated to this project, keeping it moving forward to ensure that the loco will be back in service in time for the WSR’s Summer Diesel Festival (5-7th June).

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – last weekend saw the combined efforts of Gordon, Jason, Ethan and Glenn, all hard at work underneath the loco, chipping away at the accumulations of brake dust that have solidified over the years and formed a new type of mineral. If only it was worth something.

In parallel, Jon and Roy added the finishing touches to the paintwork of the ‘A’ cooler group, picking out the various types of pipe and conduit in the designated colours. The irony is that most of this work will not be visible to anyone and will soon get dirty, but at least our painters will have the satisfaction of knowing that they did a proper job. MANY THANKS to all of our volunteers !

The weather is improving quickly, so so we will soon be able to re-start the engraving work.

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – this loco is now back at work and is in regular use Bishops Lydeard.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is now stabled at Minehead as the ‘Duty Loco’.

THIS LOCO WILL BE HEADING FOR THE SPA VALLEY RAILWAY for the weekend of 13th to the 15th June 2025 to participate in their ‘Cuckoo Line Gala’ event !

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco was fitted with two new vacuum brake hoses at Williton on Saturday 12th April 2025, replacing some life-expired parts that have seen considerable use. This loco is currently at Williton and is ready for action if called upon, but will be moving to Minehead for a week or two with Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 in tow to undergo an underframe exam and an air receiver examination, along with her slightly older sister D6566 (33048). The date and time of the movement cannot be announced via DIESELGEN because it has to be fitted in with operational requirements and is therefore likely to be carried out at short notice.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is receiving plenty of tender loving care in the hands of WSR staff and DEPG volunteers at Minehead. The focus is now on getting the various welding tasks completed so that the loco can be prepared for a thorough re-paint, inside and out. The job is taking longer than planned but the work being done is more extensive than planned, to ensure the loco can continue to operate on the WSR for many years to come.

D7017 – the underside of the engine bay roof section has been pressure washed to reveal some brighter paintwork under the accumulated dirt. Pictured at Minehead on Thursday 10th April 2025 by Neil McCannon © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is being prepared for a move to Minehead where she will be positioned over the pit for an underframe examination. The loco will be towed (dead) by Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) and will result in both of our Class 33s and both Class 35s being at Minehead for much of next week !

The date and time of the movement cannot be announced via DIESELGEN because it has to be fitted in with operational requirements and is therefore likely to be carried out at short notice.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the need to prepare sister D9526 for her period of occupation of the loco shed has drawn resources away from D9518 temporarily, but work continues on the electrical rewiring and on the body panel restorations. We will provide some photos of the electrical work as soon as possible.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – work on this loco is absorbing most of the effort of the ‘Small Engine Division’ because of the need to get the loco completed and tested before the end of May. The engine work is progressing well and is likely to be completed first because the scope of the work is being limited to attending to oil leaks and replacing the split inlet manifold bellows. The larger task is the attention being given to hidden corrosion, under and around the battery boxes and elsewhere, but this work is also progressing well and is unlikely to delay the return to service.

That issue has been dealt with by the return to more ‘normal’ weather !

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is fully serviceable and ready for action when called upon.

This week, we feature ‘LOST RAILWAYS OF DEVON by Stan Yorke to show that we don’t just have diesel books on sale, we have a much broader range, including this example of an ‘as new’ pre-owned railway history book at the excellent price of £7.50

There are many other pre-owned book titles on our online store – click here for details.

ON SHED: this popular feature is back this week with another photo from DEPG Publicity Officer Mark Bladwell‘s personal collection, continuing on the theme of parcels workings. This time, we have a correctly set headcode that tells us that D1015 ‘WESTERN CHAMPION’ was hauling the 4B05 Old Oak Common to Bristol Temple Meads parcels, so we don’t have to try and guess the origin of the working !

The photo shows a loco that was literally caked in dirt and was certainly showing signs of severe neglect, unlike the situation today where this same locomotive is main line registered and soon to visit the West Somerset Railway for the SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL. Many thanks to the DTG for their outstanding work on this loco and many thanks to Mark for sharing this photo with us all.

If you have photos that you would like to share, please let us know via contact@depg.org and we will happily include them in future editions.

Several WSR services were in the hands of diesels last week, with Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) working the afternoon service under the RED timetable on Wednesday 2nd April, covering for the booked steam loco, and the WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) covering the Minehead diagrams on the Saturday and Sunday (as rostered). The mix of traction types provides something for everyone as well as keeping costs down on the lightly loaded evening return leg to Minehead, so we look forward to covering more of these turns in future.

In fact, from Saturday May 10th, the DEPG’s Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ and Class 35 ‘Hymeks’ are booked to cover 38 of the 80-mile diagrams that originate from Minehead under the BLUE timetable through to September, so we are going to be kept busy ! The YELLOW timetable in the peak of the season will also see appearances by Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526, fresh from the repaint that is taking at Williton at the moment.

    D7017 UPDATE

Following a flurry of donations received of late, we are delighted to state that our expectations have been shattered because the D7017 bodywork repair fund was aiming for £12,000 but has now topped SIXTEEN THOUSAND POUNDS, all kindly donated by followers of these fine machines.

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the 90 people who have donated to this project, keeping it moving forward to ensure that the loco will be back in service in time for the WSR’s Summer Diesel Festival (5-7th June).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FANTASTIC SUPPORT !

The repair work is going to cost around £16,000 so the amount raised will fully cover the work being done on the loco, which is amazing and a big relief for the DEPG’s general fund. The sub-contract route was taken to make sure that the loco gets repaired in time to be able to take pole position in the celebration of 50 years of ‘Hymek’ preservation that will take place on 30th and 31st of August this year.

The fund now stands at £16,452 and will remain open until the work is completed to make sure that we have sufficient funding to cover any unexpected costs, so don’t despair if you haven’t yet donated, because we can still accept your donation !

All funds donated via this appeal will be allocated to returning D7017 to service in time for the forthcoming season. Any excess will be carried over to 2026 but still allocated to D7017.

    WSR NEWS

The DEPG is now a formal member of the Strategic Direction Programme Board, a results-oriented group of Board members from the WSR plc, the WSR Association (WSRA), the WSR Heritage Trust (WSRHT) and now the DEPG as well. This means that the long-term objectives of the railway and the supporting organisations can be kept aligned – and this can only result in good things for the railway, namely more interest for visitors which leads to more services which leads to more running opportunities. Bring it on ! We will share the news from this meeting in a co-ordinated way during the coming weeks – so WATCH THIS SPACE !

The WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL will take place from Thursday 5th through Saturday 7th June with a Mixed Traction Day on Sunday 8th. The first two of the visiting locos have been announced and they are D1015 ‘WESTERN CHAMPION’ and Class 45/1 ‘Peak’ 45108 so MAKE YOUR PLANS TO ATTEND and click on the images below to learn more. LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – efforts continue underneath the loco to make further progress with the removal of fifty years of dirt and brake dust, which has solidified beyond belief. We also continued the cleanup work on the ‘B bogie which is now outdoors enjoying the sunshine.  We gained another new volunteer on the D1010 team this week when we welcomed GLENN STREET and we hope that he had a good time getting dirty underneath D1010 – the photo suggests that he was enjoying the challenge. We need more help, so please do come along and join us if you can. Get in touch by using our CONTACT FORM and we will talk you through the steps to becoming a volunteer on Team 1010.

The weather is improving quickly, so so we will soon be able to re-start the engraving work.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the need to prepare sister D9526 for her period of occupation of the loco shed has drawn resources away from D9518 temporarily, but work continues on the electrical rewiring and on the body panel restorations. We will include some photos in the next edition of roundup.

This week, we feature ‘DIESELS ON THE WESTERN‘ by Michael Welch (featuring our home station, Williton in BR days on the cover) as another example of an ‘as new’  pre-owned book at the excellent price of £10.00.

There are many other pre-owned book titles on our online store – click here for details.

ON SHED: apologies, but we are going to have to skip this popular feature this week due to lack of time. Please send some of your photos via contact@depg.org with a brief write-up and we will happily include them in future editions.
