Current Status: Operational – undergoing planned maintenance at Williton.
D4107 was built at Horwich Works in November 1961 and first allocated to Carlisle Upperby and Kingmoor sheds until moving to Hither Green on the Southern Region (SR) in 1968. The loco was originally built with vacuum braking but the SR mostly required air braking, so the loco was upgraded to dual braking (air and vacuum) in 1969.
D4107 was renumbered to 09019 in 1973 and continued to be based on the SR until privatisation in 1994 when she became part of the ‘Mainline Freight’ fleet and received their blue livery. In 1996, ‘Mainline’ became part of English Welsh & Scottish Railways (EWS) but the loco remained in the ‘Mainline’ livery, eventually being sold into preservation by Nemesis Rail in March of 2013 and immediately taking up duties at Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway, being repainted into her original BR Green livery in November 2014. The loco was acquired by the DEPG in February 2024 and is fully operational condition.
The Class 09 shunter is very closely based on the more numerous Class 08, but with higher gearing, allowing the ’09’ to run at higher speed (max 27.5 mph) but with less hauling capability (tractive effort).
