  • Book – pre-owned – The Power of THE 40s

    Covering the English Electric Type 4 ‘D200’ class, later known as BR Class 40, these were amongst the first ‘pilot scheme’ diesel-electric locomotives that were introduced by BR back in 1958. Although heavy and underpowered compared with later designs, they were put to good use on passenger and freight workings and were based in all regions except the WR and SR. The history of the class from inception to date of publication has been captured in just over 200 black-and-white photographs, plus some in colour, in this well-known book by John Whiteley and Gavin Morrison, published in 1978.

    Covering the Brush/BR Sulzer Type 4 locomotives now known as Class 47, these versatile locomotives could be seen in many parts of the BR network hauling almost any kind of train. Several still operate on the mainline today, close to 60 years since their first introduction. The history of the class from inception to date of publication has been captured in just over 200 black-and-white photographs, plus some in colour, in this well-known book by Brian Morrison, published in 1980.

  • Book – pre-owned – WR DIESEL-HYDRAULICS

    “WR DIESEL-HYDRAULICS” by Norman Preedy and G F Gillham, published by Bradford Barton in 1974.

    The book is one of a well-known series that was published at a time when books on diesels were not so readily available as they are now. This book is faded and discoloured on the jacket but the inside is still in very good condition and contains plenty of black-and-white photos covering all of the diesel-hydraulic classes of Type 2 and upwards through their halcyon days. This is one of the most sought-after books of this series.

  • Book – The Beaten Track – Vol 1

    176 printed A4 pages filled with colour photographs covering the period 1970-1985.

    The Beaten Track illustrates a very different railway to that of today, when a multitude of railway locations, locomotive types and some longstanding practices were fast disappearing. It takes the reader to a variety of locations, many of which have now become long-lost extremities of the British railway network. The images show an assortment of traction types, very few of which can still be seen on the main line.

    All the photographs are in colour and all are accompanied by extensive captions, containing considerable historical and anecdotal information relating to the lines, stations and trains depicted.

  • Book – Western Venture

    86 printed A4 pages filled with 120 photographs (all BW) covering each of the 74 members of this much-loved class of locomotives on a variety of workings across the Western region, from the late 1960s through to the withdrawal of the class in February 1977. The photographs are mostly those of Barry Nicolle and are mostly previously unpublished. This book combines the talents of the photographers and the subject knowledge of the authors and is essential reading for all fans of the class.

  • Booklet – D1010 – From Merehead to Minehead

    72 printed pages of A4 filled with the story of the DEPG’s Class 52 ‘Western’ D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ from BR days through to preservation, initially by Foster Yeoman at Merehead Quarry, then by the DEPG at Didcot and Williton. This booklet covers the restoration and rebuild efforts that have made this locomotive a firm favourite with visitors to the DEPG and the West Somerset Railway. Plenty of detail, plenty of photographs (64 x colour, 8 x BW), many of which have not been published before, all backed up with interesting text. Definitely a must-read.
