• Weekly Roundup – 14-Nov-25

Our Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 is going to be out and about on the Great Central Railway throughout this coming weekend as a participant in their ‘Last Hurrah’ mixed-traction gala event, along with visiting Class 27 D5370 (27024) and the GCR Home fleet. The GCR are making the most of D7018 as she will be working again on Saturday 22nd November making 6 round trips on the line, and also participating in their ‘Nightrider’ event on New Year’s Eve. The loco will be staying in Leicestershire until the end of April 2026 so that she can participate in their Spring Diesel Gala, so her ‘Maybach Music’ will be playing to many more audiences – and will no doubt captivate them and leave them all wanting more !

Back at home on the WSR, the RAILWAY 200 ‘inspiration’ travelling exhibition train is visiting Bishops Lydeard between Monday 24th and Saturday 29th November and a SHUTTLE TRAIN service will be running between Taunton Station and Bishops Lydeard Station on Tuesday 25th and again on Friday 28th November – but only for use by passengers with tickets for the Exhibition Train – and more good news, the TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT ARE FREE !

Here’s an extract from the WSR’s events page that gives more details:

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the weather at Williton turned out to be quite nice last weekend, allowing the team to complete the removal of the secondary springs from the ‘A’ bogie while clean-up work progressed on the ‘B’ bogie.

A welcome boost to morale was the delivery of the refurbished and tested springs, comprising all 12 primary leaf springs (6 per bogie, fully refurbished and each fitted with a new buckle) plus eight secondary coil springs (from the ‘B’ bogie, tested OK) and the two giant secondary leaf springs from the ‘B’ bogie, which were also (thankfully) fit for further use without needing repair. MANY THANKS to OWEN SPRINGS of Rotherham for doing such a fine job on these springs.

D1010 – the reconditioned primary springs (centre pallet) and the tested secondary springs (left and right hand pallets) have been delivered to Williton. Pictured with Class 33 D6575 (33057) in the background on 8th November 2025 by Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 4.0

D1010 – the full set of 12 primary springs (for both bogies) have been fully disassembled, reconditioned and then fitted with new buckles, an excellent service provided by OWEN SPRINGS of Rotherham. Pictured at Williton on 8th November 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 4.0

D1010 – the ‘B’ bogie is getting the ‘Ian F’ treatment in preparation for the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) that needs to be carried out on the bogie frame before the springs can go back in. D1010 – the two massive secondary leaf springs from the ‘A’ bogie were finally extracted and now await cleaning, inspection and testing. Each spring carries one quarter of the weight of the loco body, therefore 19 tons ! Pictured at Williton on 8th November 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 4.0

We also made progress on the marking of a new batch of sponsored patches, with four separate areas marked out in a grid pattern and made ready for engraving. The drawings are also being updated to include these new patch areas and this will allow us to generate the certificates as part of the catch-up batch that we are currently working on. Thank you all for your patience !

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – outstationed at Bishops Lydeard in support of WSR operations. This loco will move to Williton at the end of the operating season so that the most urgent of the bodywork repairs that were started last winter can be continued. Class 14 D9526 will be moving to Bishops Lydeard to cover for the ’09’.

Class 08 08401 (D3516) – last week, we asked if anyone knew where and when this loco had been converted from vacuum braking to air braking and we received several replies that confirmed the place was BREL Swindon Works and the date of outshopping was 7th October 1978.

MANY THANKS to Ian Sugden, Keith Fender and Neale Long for providing us with this information !

Ian’s father, the late Alan Sugden, was the author of the ‘Loco Register‘ books that were published by Platform 5 in the past and Ian now holds the files that contain such detail. Many thanks to Keith for acting as go-between and for obtaining this week’s ‘ON SHED’ photo of 08401 (D3516) and sister 08444 (D3559) from Ian to share with us all.

Neale’s source was the Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RTCS) periodical publication ‘Railway Observers‘, and the info was discovered after a ‘deep dive’, which probably took some time, given the amount of detail that had to be sifted through.

See the updated TIMELINE page for this loco by clicking here.

08401 (D3516) – this loco is now stabled on No 1 road at Williton and will undergo conversion from air braking to dual braking (air and vacuum) during the coming months. The updated timeline of her working life can be found by following this link. Pictured at Williton on 8th November 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is stabled at Williton so that her planned maintenance work can be continued while outdoors. When the shed is available, she will move indoors so that her leaking engine room roof can be removed and repaired.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco underwent an oil change last Saturday and also had a new set of engine oil filters, which should keep her engine in good shape for another three or four years. The cost of buying the new oil and filters and disposing of the old oil and the contaminated filters is around £2,000 in total, so we only do the oil change when the periodic oil sample reports tell us that it is necessary. This is the same practice that has been used on mainline diesels since the 1970s and saves a lot of waste, while also flagging up the first signs of engine issues such as coolant leaking into the oil or unburnt fuel that ends up diluting the oil. The old adage ‘a stitch in time saves nine‘ is absolutely right in this case.

This loco will soon be moving to Bishops Lydeard where she will remain ‘on duty’ and under cover throughout the winter.

D6575 (33057) – this loco underwent an engine oil change at Williton on Saturday 8th November 2025, the first phase of which was to pump the 400+ litres of life-expired engine oil into the waste oil container alongside the loco, for subsequent removal and recycling. Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is stabled on number 1 road at Williton and will undergo some light maintenance work before being ‘winterised’ later this month.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – as mentioned previously, this loco is currently based at Loughborough on the Great Central Railway and will remain there until the end of April 2026. The GCR will be making good use of the loco while she is in their hands, with local support being provided by DEPG Treasurer Paul Tucker, who happens to live very near to where the loco is stabled, and from DEPG Chairman Martin Howard, who will also be in attendance for the run on the 22nd.

    Here are the running dates:

On Saturday 22nd November, a charter has been organised by DTG and DEPG member STEVE FULCHER. Here are the details (D7018 services show as ‘Loco D2‘ and are highlighted in yellow), please contact Steve directly using the details below if you would like to ride on this special train. WELL DONE STEVE for arranging this. PLEASE DO TRY AND SUPPORT THIS EVENT because that is the way to ensure that this will be the first of many such ‘Hymek’ charters on this and other lines!

Steve has advised that the Griddle Car will be included in the train and will be open all day, and will offer CURRY in the evening, so if you were in two minds about going along, then this should clinch it. GET ON THE PHONE to Steve or email him and book your ticket now !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work continued on the electrical system re-wire and on the rebuild of the Paxman ‘Ventura’ 6YJXL engine that last served in sister loco D9526. The need to prepare sister loco D9526 for service took some of the resources away temporarily, but the team will be back on D9518 once D9526 departs for Bishops Lydeard.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco will be working a ‘Tidy Train’ on Saturday 22nd November, starting at Williton but ending her day at Bishops Lydeard where she will remain throughout the winter to cover for Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019). Last weekend, a modification was applied to D9526 to allow her coolant level to be topped up without having to climb onto the loco bonnet. This modification involved adding a hose connection, a gate valve and a non-return valve to the existing cooling system pipework to allow a top-up to take place using a standard carriage hose when at the platform. A much safer way of working !

D9526 – the coolant top-up modification was assembled on the bench before being fitted to the loco. The hose filler connection is the same as that used for coaching stock. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 8th November 2025 by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 4.0

D9526 – the coolant top-up modification was fitted inside the engine compartment of the loco at Williton on Saturday 8th November 2025. This allows the cooling system to be topped-up when at the platform by simply opening one of the engine bay access doors and connecting a standard carriage water hose. Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and we hope that she will be rostered to assist with some of the Christmas Specials, to help keep her in good operating condition.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is stabled outdoors on Number 3 road at Williton and is fully serviceable.

If you can help by donating your time to any of these projects, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

ON SHED – as mentioned previously, this week we have a fine shot of two Class 08 shunters that have both made it safely into preservation and are both currently serviceable, 08401 (D3516) having joined the DEPG fleet in October 2025 and 08444 (D3559) having been based at the Bodmin & Wenford Railway in Cornwall since 1987.

Both were built at Derby Works in 1958 and were allocated to Doncaster (36A) at the time of the below photograph before heading in different directions, one east, one west. However, both are now together again in the West Country, and their future is assured.

This photo of 08401 (D3516) and sister 08444 (D3559) was taken at Doncaster Works on Saturday 22nd October 1977. Both 1958-vintage locos survive in preservation today. Photo by Ian Sugden © CC BY-NC 4.0

  • Weekly Roundup – 07-Nov-25

The WSR’s 2025 public timetabled running season came to a close last Sunday, but the absence of train movements is only temporary because the RAILWAY 200 ‘inspiration’ travelling exhibition train is visiting Bishops Lydeard between Monday 24th and Saturday 29th November and a SHUTTLE TRAIN service will be running between Taunton Station and Bishops Lydeard Station on Tuesday 25th and again on Friday 28th November – but only for use by passengers with tickets for the Exhibition Train – and more good news, the TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT ARE FREE !

Here’s an extract from the WSR’s events page that gives more details:

Inspiration is a static, interactive exhibition train on a 60-stop year-long tour of Britain for Railway 200, the national celebration marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway. It brings the story of Britain’s railways – its past, present and future – to life through immersive displays, personal stories and hands on exhibits.

Inspiration is for everyone, and is fully accessible. Inspiration is designed to engage people of all ages. Curated by the Railway 200 Team and the National Railway Museum, Inspiration features interactive displays throughout four carriages each offering a unique experience.

Dare it be mentioned, but the Christmas Specials will be starting on Saturday 29th November, the kick-off being the MINEHEAD STATION CHRISTMAS MARKET SPECIAL that departs from Bishops Lydeard at 10:30 on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th, returning from Minehead at 15:00 each day. The handy graphic below has been borrowed from the WSR’s Facebook page, but gives a quick indication of what is on offer:

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026 will be posted ASAP.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the weather interfered with progress on the removal of the secondary springs of ‘A’ bogie at Williton last weekend, but some springs were eventually removed and the rest will be tackled during this coming weekend, the weather forecast being much more favourable – if it turns out to be correct, of course !

In parallel with the work on the bogies, attention is being given to planning some remedial work on the ‘A’ engine, which exhibited some coolant leakage from between some of the cylinder heads when cold, before the last engine run, back in November 2021. Our friends at the DTG have advised that the upper cylinder liner seals are probably the cause, this being a known issue on this type of diesel engine and for which there is a known fix. However, the engine is currently mounted on a stand on a Boiler Trolley along with the ‘B’ engine, so it cannot be worked on until it is brought back down to ground level. This is going to take some planning and will involve a crane lift. The engine work also needs to be thought through so that we come up with a remediation plan that does not go further than necessary, the engine being otherwise OK.

Here’s a reminder of the last time that the ‘A’ engine was run-up, which was just before the electrical systems within the loco were disconnected as her bodywork overhaul progressed. Click here or on the image below to go to the Weekly Roundup of 07-Nov-21 and scroll down to the D1010 section.

The funding that we already have in place for D1010 is sufficient to carry us through for the time being, but we will be needing to top up to get the loco completed in time for the 2027 running season.

Before asking for more funding, we will be writing up a report on how much has been raised, how much has been spent and on what, and provide the estimates to get the job done. We expect to remain within the £100,000 that was originally set as a target.

Several sponsors have been reminding us that we still haven’t completed the marking of a number of patches, and some certificates have yet to be sent out. Apologies for this, but we will be straightening this out over the coming weeks and getting up to date with the administration of this very successful fundraising scheme.

Class 08 08401 (D3516) – the DEPG’s most recent acquisition was started up and exercised in the yard at Williton last Saturday, with WSR Diesel Traction Inspector John Leach at the controls. The loco was given the ‘thumbs up’ and preparatory work is now taking place for the reinstatement of the vacuum braking system that was removed when the loco was converted to air braking, back in the late 1970s. Does anyone know exactly when this work took place and when ? We suspect it was done at Doncaster, but we do not have any evidence to support that view. Please use our CONTACT form if you can help us answer this question. See the TIMELINE page for this loco by clicking here.

Below is a short video clip of the loco undergoing testing in the inclement weather at Williton on Saturday 1st November 2025. Click here or on the image below to view the video:

08401 (D3516) – this loco was operated under her own power on No 1 road at Williton on 1st November 2025 and shuttled between Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) on the left and Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 on the right. Click here or on the image above to view this video clip by Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is stabled at Williton so that her planned maintenance work can be continued while outdoors. When the shed is available, she will move indoors so that her leaking engine room roof can be removed and repaired.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco has also returned to Williton and will undergo an oil change this coming weekend. The downside is that her Sulzer 8LDA28 engine requires 105 gallons of oil, which converts to 400 litres, which costs around £2,000 these days !

We carry out regular oil condition monitoring and only change the oil when necessary (the previous oil change on this loco was in December 2021) but the latest sample report stated that the time has come again. The oil filters will also be replaced and then there will be 400 litres of used oil and three dirty filters that will have to be disposed of, which will be another expense that has to be offset against the running income.

The loco will then move to Bishops Lydeard where she will remain ‘on duty’ and under cover throughout the winter.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is stabled on number 1 road at Williton and will undergo some light maintenance work before being ‘winterised’ later this month.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is currently based at Loughborough on the Great Central Railway and will remain there until the end of April 2026.

ON SHED – this week, we feature something different, a loco of a fading Class pictured when almost new at a location that once boasted a huge marshalling yard but has long since closed down, namely Healey Mills, near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. Here’s the narrative that was provided by the photographer, Rob Crispin:

“As South Devon Railway have announced a 2 day diesel gala (8-9th November), and their guest locos are two Class 56s, I thought I’d dig out a photo of one of those from the 1980s.

56109 was less than a year old when I took this photo of it at Healey Mills in February, 1983. The memories of this trip were that it was the worst trip due to the fog not lifting at all, the fact that hardly anything was visible, and the freezing cold temperature which teenagers were never going to be fully prepared for.

This was the only photo that made it to an album. I can remember seeing the outline of an 08 coupled to a brake van, which clearly had a fire raging inside, as well as probably half the depot staff!

56109 managed just over 20 years in service before being withdrawn. It then managed another 8 years before it was scrapped. Although cases can be made for other places, if I could time travel and revisit another school trip location again, I’d probably pick Healey Mills as I only ever visited there on that day.

Class 56 ‘Grid’ 56109 was less than one year old when pictured through the fog at Healey Mills depot on a very cold and dismal Friday 25th February 1983. Photo by Rob Crispin © CC BY-NC 4.0

Many thanks to Rob for sharing his photos and memories with us all.

Please continue to send in your photos of locos on shed, at the platform or in action, because we appreciate them all, any Class, any place, any time, the more varied, the better. Use our CONTACT FORM to get in touch. Thanks !

  • Weekly Roundup – 31-Oct-25

Reminiscent of the days when ‘Hymeks’ worked the Geest banana trains from Barry Docks, D7018 looked the part as she hauled a train of vans past Kinchley Lane on the Great Central Railway on Tuesday 28th October 2025. Photo by Cameron Walker © CC BY-NC 4.0

Cameron’s video clip of D7018 working in this location can be found on YouTube by clicking this link.

The double and quadruple-tracked sections of the Great Central Railway provided an excellent backdrop for our Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 while performing on Tuesday 28th October for a photo charter that was organised by David Williams and Timeline Events. The ‘Hymek’ was kept busy shuttling her train of ‘fully fitted’ vans back and forth along the line as the photographers made the most of the pleasant weather and captured some really nice images, only a few of which we have space for today. Many thanks to Andrew and Cameron for sharing their excellent work with us.

D7018 is staying at the GCR until the end of April 2026 and this will provide several opportunities for ‘Hymek’ haulage, as below:

On Saturday 22nd November, a charter has been organised by DTG and DEPG member STEVE FULCHER. Here are the details (D7018 services shows as ‘Loco D2‘ and highlighted in yellow), please contact Steve directly using the details below if you would like to ride on this special train. WELL DONE STEVE for arranging this. PLEASE DO TRY AND SUPPORT THIS EVENT because that is the way to ensure that this will be the first of many such ‘Hymek’ charters on this and other lines!

Also making the news during this last week, AC Railbus W79978 has been on the move from the Swindon & Cricklade Railway to the former Cirencester Station, to take part in the Cirencester History Festival. The Railbus used to work the branch that joined the Swindon to Gloucester line at Kemble from 1959 until the line was closed to passengers in 1964 (and closed completely in 1965).

AC Cars Ltd Railbus W79978 took a short break from the Swindon & Cricklade Railway to take part in the Cirencester History Festival over the weekend of 25/26th October 2025. Pictured en route on Friday 24th by Ken Mumford © CC BY-NC 4.0

Here’s an account of a busy weekend, from DEPG member and Railbus owner Martin Rouse:

“We had a really enjoyable weekend, albeit very tiring, I think we squeezed a months’ worth of hours into four days! The event was the Cirencester History Festival. We were invited to take the Railbus along, to display at the Cirencester town station, a place it last visited in April 1964! The station building is now in the middle of a council-owned car park which presented a range of logistical and bureaucratic challenges involving temporary closure of the car park and copious amounts of risk assessments, method statements etc. We only got the official go-ahead two days before transport day! Fortunately, we had everything in place ready to go.

The last couple of months have been quite busy getting the Railbus back together in time for the event. Transport was carried out very professionally by Pete Briddon and Jason Boyd. Friday 24th saw us load up the Railbus in the usual manner involving constructing a temporary ramp to move it onto the trailer. At Cirencester, a lot more work was required as we had to construct a temporary track panel to unload onto, all of this in torrential rain! On the Saturday and Sunday of the event, we had lots and lots of visitors.

The station is grade 2 listed, designed by Brunel, and this was the first opportunity the public have had to see inside it for several decades. Up until earlier this year it was owned by Cirencester Council and had not been occupied since about 1997 due to the condition of the structure.

They finally realised that they could not maintain it and had no use for it, so it was put up for sale. Local architect Jonathan Rixon has purchased it and plans to use it for his office base; he is very enthusiastic about its history and plans to keep it as original as possible.

Monday came around all too quickly and all the hard work of loading, track dismantling and unloading at Blunsdon had to be repeated.

Due to the amount of interest we had in Railbus W79978 last weekend, we will be running it at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway this Sunday, 2nd November.”

In 1962, the Railbus provided fourteen services each way per day and was very well patronised, but the powers-that-be determined that the line was uneconomical, so it was closed down. Photo by Lamberhurst via Wikipedia © CC BY-NC 4.0

Many thanks to Martin for providing us with this information. We wish him well with the ongoing restoration of this very interesting machine. Click here for info on W79978.

This coming weekend brings the curtain down on the WSR’s 2025 public timetable season, with an all-steam service on Saturday 1st but with diesel participation on Sunday 2nd in the form of the WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU). Looking back on the 2025 season, it has been hard work and eventful, so a big WELL DONE goes out to all who have been involved in delivering the regular timetables and special events of 2025 !

Keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page in case the motive power allocations change (we will TRY and keep this page aligned with the latest information).

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026 will be posted ASAP. Dates posted via previous roundups are subject to confirmation by the WSR (apologies for ‘jumping the gun’).

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the use of Colin Foxhall’s winching method was proven to be a success, and a team effort that also involved Reece, Tim and Gordon resulted in all of the 2-inch BSW nuts being released by the end of the day on Tuesday 28th October. This will now allow the secondary springs (8 coil springs and 2 massive leaf springs) to be lifted off the ‘A’ bogie during this coming weekend, weather permitting. The work on cleaning up and inspecting the removed parts continues in parallel with the re-start of the repair work on the remaining cooler group. As soon as the cooler group is repaired, it will go outside so that the bogie can move inside the shed.

D1010 – the 2″ BSW nuts put up a fight, but patience and the appliance of science won the day. Colin F was pictured with his 70mm spanner and one of the troublesome nuts at Williton on Saturday 25th October 2025. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 4.0

D1010 – the ‘A’ cooler group has been turned over one more time to allow access to the one remaining area that requires repair. It will soon be completed and moved outdoors, where it will be sheeted over until needed. Pictured at Williton on Tuesday 28th October 2025 by Tony Austin © CC BY-NC 4.0

The cost of overhauling the bogies is significant because there are many large and heavy parts that are expensive to refurbish or replace.

Class 08 08401 (D3516) – this recently-acquired loco was inspected while in the North Yard at Williton and passed as fit to be towed to the DEPG’s South Yard so that further inspection work could take place. The first impressions are that the loco is in very good condition mechanically, which is to be expected considering that she was in use for spot hire until a fault developed in her main generator (subsequently reconditioned) that resulted in her withdrawal from service (see the TIMELINE page for this loco by clicking here).

08401 (D3516) – this loco has been moved onto No 1 road at Williton and is now stabled between Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) on the left and Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 on the right. Pictured while undergoing inspection on Saturday 25th October 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 4.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is stabled at Williton so that her planned maintenance work can be continued while outdoors. When the shed is available, she will move indoors so that her leaking engine room roof can be removed and repaired.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco has also returned to Williton for planned maintenance work and an oil change that will take place during the next few weeks. The loco will then move to Bishops Lydeard where she will remain ‘on duty’ throughout the winter.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – some excellent news – the Transmission Team conducted some health checks on the transmission of this loco and we were pleasantly surprised by the findings. The transmission is in fine condition (as assessed via the inspection ports) and the filters were clean, which is remarkable, given the high hours on this machine. We can now focus on other tasks that will make the loco easier to manage with the view of using this loco more frequently in the years to come.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is now indoors on No. 2 road at Williton and is undergoing an underframe cleanup and repaint. This loco will move to Bishops Lydeard in November to cover for Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019).

ON SHED – this week, we feature our newly-acquired Class 08 shunter 08401 (D3516) in 1988, surrounded by Classes 08 and 37 locos, thought to be at Immingham. This photo is much appreciated as we are appealing for any photos of this loco in service anywhere around the Country. This will allow us to build a gallery of photos that can be made available online. If you have any photos in your collection, either as D3516 or 08401 then please get in touch using our CONTACT form.

In the first instance, we are trying to establish the date and place of conversion from vacuum braking to air braking, so photos from the late 1970s will be particularly helpful. Refer to our loco TIMELINE page for clues as to the missing information.

Here’s a photo dated 1988 that has been kindly provided to us by Rail Image Collections:

DEPG NEWS: our team of volunteers continue to share their time between working on locos and working on facilities that are needed to work on locos. The restoration of the ‘Niftylift’ ‘cherry picker’ is an example of this, because once restored and passed as safe to use, this handy machine will be used for all kinds of purposes, from washing locos through to clearing gutters and maintaining cranes. Very handy indeed.

DEPG volunteer Jon T was at work restoring the Niftylift ‘Cherry Picker’ at Williton on Saturday 25th October 2025. It won’t be long before it is ready for the insurance inspection, then training can begin. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 4.0

  • DIESELGEN – Tuesday 28-Oct-25

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) was pictured approaching Nornvis Bridge while working an Empty Coaching Stock train from Bishops Lydeard on 19th May 2024. Photo by Bernard Bates © CC BY-NC 3.0

During this final week of the 2025 running season on the WSR, there is a need for Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) movements to position the coaching stock in the appropriate places for the BLUE timetable public service duties and for preparation for the festive Christmas seasonal specials.

On Tuesday 28th October, Class 33 D6566 (33048) will work ‘Light Engine’ (LE) from Williton to Bishops Lydeard to collect Coach Set ‘B’ and the ‘Quantock Belle‘ dining set and will then work them ‘ECS’ to Minehead. The loco will then return to Williton ‘LE’. The approximate timings for this are as follows:

10:00 : depart Williton (WN) LE for Bishops Lydeard (BL)

11:30 : depart BL for Minehead (MD) on a 9-coach ECS working

13:53 15:15 : depart MD LE for WN

NOTE – the timings may change to suit operational requirements

Although the 2025 running season is almost at a close, keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page which is regularly updated and carries the list of diesel-hauled public services for 2025. This page is used in conjunction with DIESELGEN to provide a complete picture of diesel locomotive activities on the WSR:

  • Weekly Roundup – 24-Oct-25

The easy way to load a loco onto road transport was demonstrated at the Hunslet Engine Company‘s Barton-under-Needwood facility (near Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire) on Wednesday 22nd October 2025 with 08401 (D3516) raised using the overhead cranes and then lowered onto the trailer that had been positioned underneath. Photo by S. A. Smith © CC BY-NC 3.0

The big news this week is that the DEPG have acquired Class 08 Shunter 08401 (D3516) from the Hunslet Engine Company and the loco has already been delivered to the WSR’s North Yard at Williton to undergo inspection before being moved to the DEPG’s South Yard. The loco is in full working order but has not been in use for while, having just received a newly-refurbished generator, and is in need of a Vehicle Inspection & Brake Test (VIBT) before she can move under her own power.

The loco was built at BR’s Derby Works in 1958 and entered service at Plymouth Laira Depot (83D) in June of that year. The loco spent time at St Blazey, Exmouth Junction and Exeter before moving to Bristol Bath Road in December of 1966. A move ‘upcountry’ took place in August of 1968 and the loco remained in BR service until being withdrawn in February 2004. See the D3516 (08401) TIMELINE page for details.

A new career as a ‘spot hire’ loco began after acquisition by the Hunslet Engine Company and the loco was sent out to 8 different industrial locations, some more than once, over a period of 13 years until stopped with a main generator fault in January 2024 (details will be added to the D3516 (08401) TIMELINE page as soon as possible). The loco then underwent repairs culminating in the fitting of a newly-refurbished main generator, but a strategic decision by the owners to pull out of the Class 08 hire market created the opportunity that the DEPG could not pass up, the chance to acquire an operational Class 08 that was in good condition with good, thick tyres.

The down side is that the loco does not currently have a vacuum brake capability, having been converted directly from vacuum brake to air brake during a works visit some time in the 1980s. The DEPG already holds stock of vacuum braking equipment and only needs to acquire a few more parts to reinstate the vacuum braking, but the installation will take some time because of the way that the conversion was done, with no consideration for being dual-braked at some time in the future. A standard design for a dual-braked loco exists and will be followed. Once dual-braked, the loco will be made available to the WSR for hire and will allow Class 09 D4107 (09019) to have a longer period in the shed to undergo roof and cab restoration.

The upside of adding this loco to the DEPG fleet is the prospect of hire income all-year round, which is generally the case with Class 08 or Class 09 locomotives, as they can handle engineering trains in addition to covering depot and yard shunts.

Safely unloaded onto WSR metals, the DEPG’s newly-acquired Class 08 ‘Shunter’ 08401 (D3516) was in the care of the diminutive Ruston 48DS number 200793 at Williton on Thursday 23rd October 2025. Photo by Tony Austin © CC BY-NC 3.0

It goes without saying that the acquisition of this working asset has left the DEPG tight for cash, so any help in restoring that position would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much !

The WSR’s AUTUMN STEAM WEEKEND took place from Friday 17th through Sunday 19th October and turned out to be a well-patronised event, although the weather tried to dampen it down with grey skies on Friday and Saturday and very wet and dismal weather on the Sunday. However, undeterred, the event went ahead and provided some excellent scenes with the additional interest of Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) operating on each of the three days. The crowds were evidently enjoying the spectacle regardless of the weather, so we hope that autumn events can become a regular feature in the calendar in years to come. WELL DONE to all involved in delivering this successful event !

Congratulations to the WSR’s social media team for getting their number of Facebook followers up to their interim target of 47077 – and many thanks for featuring our ‘celebrity’ Class 47 in their Facebook post, replicated in part below.

Why is ‘NORTH STAR’ a ‘celebrity’ ? Click this link to find out.

This coming weekend (25/26 October), the WSR is operating the RED timetable (3 trains each way per day) with a mix of steam traction and diesel in the form of the Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) and again next week (half-term week) with the BLUE timetable (4 trains each way per day) in force on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2026 will be posted ASAP. Dates posted via previous roundups are subject to confirmation by the WSR (apologies for ‘jumping the gun’).

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’– the weather held up well on Saturday 18th and allowed work to continue on the bogies outdoors. The target was the removal of the secondary suspension springs from the ‘A’ bogie, which involves having to heat up the four massive nuts (last week we said 8 nuts but 4 of them are lock nuts which are fairly easy to remove without heating) that are used to keep the coil springs properly tensioned. The nuts have a 2 inch thread diameter (51 mm) and have been in the same position and exposed to the elements for 50 years, so they do not want to come off. Previous experience with the ‘B’ bogie showed that a few minutes under the oxy-acetelene torch would be the answer and the nuts would then be easy to remove. However, the ‘A’ bogie put up much more of a fight, and work is ongoing using Colin Foxhall’s winching method to get the nuts removed without damaging the threads of the spring hanger itself. Here are some photos:

D1010 – the 2″ BSW nuts were heated using oxy-acetylene equipment and then the 70mm spanner and extension tube were used to try to slacken them – but to no avail. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 18th September 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the 2″ BSW nuts on the spring hangers were evidently putting up quite a fight ! Pictured at Williton on Saturday 18th September 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the winch method combined with the use of a jack to cancel out the spring pressure made some progress, but there is more work to be done on this during the coming week – and another two such nuts on the other side of the bogie ! Pictured at Williton on Tuesday 21st September 2025. Photo by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

Aside from the struggles on the ‘A’ bogie, the next step for the ‘B’ bogie will be to move it inside the loco shed so that the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) can take place using the Dye Penetrant Inspection process. The primary suspension leaf springs have now been refurbished at OWEN SPRINGS LTD. in Rotherham and will be on their way back to Williton during the coming days, so the need to get the NDT work completed has taken on additional significance.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco has now returned to Williton so that her planned maintenance work can be continued and she will be undergoing some remedial work on her leaking engine room roof while back at Williton.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco was in use on each of the three days of the Autumn Steam Weekend event that took place from Friday through Sunday 17-19th October. Currently the ‘duty loco’ stabled at Minehead, this loco will return to Williton for planned maintenance work during November and will then move to Bishops Lydeard, where she will remain throughout the winter.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – now back at Williton and undergoing planned maintenance and condition monitoring checks. The loco is stabled on number 1 road at Williton.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – we have been made aware of several additional running dates for this loco while on hire to the GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY (GCR) and they are tabulated below:

Here are the details, please contact Steve directly using the details below if you would like to ride on this special train. WELL DONE STEVE for arranging this, we hope that all seats get sold because that is the way to ensure that this will be the first of many such charters !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work on the electrical system re-wire has resumed and plenty of progress has also been made on the rebuild of the Paxman ‘Ventura’ 6YJXL engine that last served in sister loco D9526. The first of the six pistons was re-installed in the engine block on Tuesday 21st October and the method of working was established that will allow the remaing five pistons to be installed this coming Tuesday. Another big step forward, well done team !

D9518 – this photo shows the first of the six pistons being re-introduced to the cylinder block. This has to be done very carefully to avoid causing damage to the piston rings or cylinder bores. Pictured at Williton on Tuesday 21st October 2025 by Terry Deacon © CC BY-NC 3.0

D9518 – now looking at the bottom of the engine, the two ‘big end’ bearing caps have been fitted to the connecting rod of the first piston, which is of the ‘fork’ type. The other piston that will share the same crankshaft journal will be of the ‘blade’ type. Pictured at Williton on Tuesday 21st October 2025 by Terry Deacon © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is now indoors on No. 2 road at Williton and is undergoing an underframe cleanup and repaint. This loco will move to Bishops Lydeard in November to cover for Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019).

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be in regular use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and is the subject of a social media post by the West Somerset Railway – click this link to go the the WSR Facebook page.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is stabled outdoors on Number 3 road at Williton and is available for use as required (it might get used to move 08410 to the South Yard on Saturday 25th).

ON SHED – the photo by Andy Galpin showing Class 47 1677 ‘THOR’ (47091, 47647, 47846 then 57308 ‘TIN TIN’) at Crewe Works being prepared for a refresh to at least one of her ‘Full Yellow Ends’ (even though her two-tone green paintwork remained in a heavily faded condition) continues to generate responses, but we are still unclear as to what was being done and why.

The booklet ‘Class 47 Data File – Part 5B D1660-D1681‘ by R.P. Levett and P.M Jacques states that 47091 (1677) was the last of the ‘WR namers’ to go into blue livery, as late as September 1975 !

Here’s some feedback from DEPG volunteer Jon Tooke:

“the bogies have either been sprayed over in black or they are a set of reconditioned ones but the fuel tanks and the battery boxes have yet to be painted, plus the roof and the cab look very shiny in a coat of black as some of the class received back in the day. The bufferbeam has been freshly painted into Signal Red colour and the covering on the buffers is evidence of this. The cocks on the ends of the air pipes have been painted red too, the yellow ends waiting to be done. The papers stuck to the side of the loco are possibly work orders (similar to the ones you send us on a regular basis!) relating to what work is required on the loco. The cab door has (probably) been painted yellow first and left ajar to stop the paint from drying hard and stopping the door from ever opening again!”

And here is some feedback from DEPG member Paul Mear:

‘Crewe Works had so much green paint that they were painting diesels green until 1971 and it is for that very reason that so many ’40s’ and ’47s’ were still green when renumbered, including 47091.”

Many thanks to Jon and Paul for sharing their thoughts with us all. The mystery remains unsolved, so here is the photo again, one last time:

Class 47 1677 ‘THOR’ (47091, 47647, 47846 and then 57308 ‘TIN TIN’) was pictured in Crewe Works on 23rd July 1972 while receiving a refresh to her ‘full yellow ends’ with red buffer beam and a black roof – but curiously remaining in her faded two-tone green livery. Does anyone know why this piece of selective re-painting was carried out ? Photo by Andy Galpin © CC BY-NC 3.0

This week, in recognition of the popularity of the recent Class 37 event that was held on the Severn Valley Railway, we feature a photo of three of the Class on a working that was commonplace in South Wales for several years – the TRIPLE-HEADED Port Talbot to Llanwern iron ore trains with 27 bogie tippler wagons carrying 2,084 tons of iron ore per train (2,754 tons trailing load).

This atmospheric image has been provided by DEPG member Stuart Warr who also provided the following information:

“Pictured on 18 November 1976 at North Cornelly are 37304 (D6604), 37301 (D6601, 37412) and 37302 (D6602, 37416) working an unidentified empty iron ore set between Llanwern and Port Talbot. The current Pyle station is situated about 50-yards behind where I was stood to take this picture, the footbridge in view is at the site of the first Pyle station, behind the footbridge is the A48 road that crossed much of South Wales as a Trunk Road before the M4 was completed, just beyond that is the site of the second Pyle station!”

The ’37s’ started working the triple-headers in 1976 and continued until displaced by the arrival of the Class 56s in 1979, the ’56s’ working in pairs with less drama – but also less reliability. These were in turn displaced by a single Class 60 in the 1990s.

TRIPLE-HEADED English Electric Class 37s at work on the South Wales Main Line – 37304 leads 37301 and 37302 through North Cornelly on 18th November 1976, returning the empties to Port Talbot iron ore terminal, with around 5 miles left to run to their destination. The ‘300’ series were from the last batch built (in 1965) and were modified to have strengthened drawbars and couplers to cope with the additional loadings. Many thanks to Stuart for sharing his photos and his memories with us all !

Please continue to send in your photos of locos on shed, at the platform or in action, because we appreciate them all, any Class, any place, any time, the more varied, the better. Use our CONTACT FORM to get in touch. Thanks !
