Last Sunday, the torrential rainfall resulted in severe flooding at Blue Anchor station, causing a landslip that blocked the ‘Down’ line (towards Minehead) and damaged the signalling equipment. All services on the WSR were suspended on Sunday afternoon and the Permanent Way (PW) and Signalling & Telegraph (S&T) teams went into action to allow services to be restored (with restrictions) in time for resumption of the Blue timetable services on the following Tuesday.
WELL DONE to the staff and volunteers who braved the poor conditions to protect the line and equipment and restore normal running !
Just a few days previously, the picture was one of normality – well, kind of normal, except that an unusual visitor was pictured at Blue Anchor station as it made its way to Minehead for storage …

The WSR is hosting two GWR ‘Castle’ class High Speed Trains (HSTs) for several weeks, to free up space at Laira depot (Plymouth) while that depot is being tasked with the accelerated withdrawal of ‘HSTs’ from frontline services with both GWR and Cross Country Trains.
By agreement between the WSR and GWR, the weekend of 23rd/24th September has been upgraded from Blue to Yellow timetable and now includes the opportunity for the public to travel the length of the wonderful WSR in air-conditioned comfort and style !

The ‘HST’ running opportunity does impact the previous plans that were announced via DIESELGEN and ROUNDUP in relation to our Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ D6566 (33 048) and D6575 (33 057) because the timetable for the weekend of 23rd/24th September has now been upgraded from Blue to YELLOW (5 trains each way per day). Here’s an updated table showing the revised workings:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – significant progress has been made on the ‘A’ transmission with the turbine rail being the target for disassembly this week. Although the internals of the turbine rail appear to be in excellent condition, the central oilway that feeds bearing 3/152 (the bearing that failed at the ‘B’ end back in 2018) was found to be completely blocked with oily sludge and not capable of delivering any oil. The bearing showed signs of running hot due to lack of lubrication, but was otherwise undamaged, so it seems that we have caught this just in time and prevented a failure and the associated damage. The bodywork and electrical teams are trying to continue their work but the weather has other plans. The loco will be moved back into the loco shed as soon as the arrangements can be made for a yard shunt, and this will allow work to resume.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco has been stabled at Bishops Lydeard but is in service on Saturday 23rd, but only for the first leg of the diagram, as she will be remaining at Minehead as the standby locomotive.
Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is outstationed at Minehead and will take over from sister D6566 on the return leg on Saturday 23rd, then work the full diagram on Sunday 24th. The intention is that this loco will be subjected to an underframe inspection and traction motor inspection during the next few weeks, while at Bishops Lydeard.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – the electrical fault-finding work is continuing on the engine speeder valve circuit and the Vacuum Governor circuit.
Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – the work taking place on this locomotive continues to be of an analytical nature as the Root Cause Analysis develops.
Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – work continues on the brake rigging, with several components still undergoing repair and restoration to allow this aspect to be completed. Progress is more visual on the cab restoration, with the driver’s power and direction controller being reassembled with new component parts and replica fascia plates. The photos below show the progress on this very important piece of equipment:

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is undergoing a ‘top end’ engine overhaul at Grosmont Works on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Work is proceeding well, but the amount of work being done means that the loco is unlikely to emerge until after the main running season ends, but she will be in very good shape for 2024 and beyond.
Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – the cab of this loco is undergoing an internal repaint in the capable hands of Jon T, but the loco remains serviceable and ready for action.

We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

ON SHED – another fine memory from the camera of Kelvin Lumb, this time at Platform 2 of Cardiff General station (now Cardiff Central) in the hot summer of 1976, probably working the 1530 to Paddington via Gloucester. The ‘Guv’ was the favourite of many, built at Crewe and allocated to Cardiff Canton from new in March 1963 before moving to Laira (Plymouth) after spending some time at Landore (Swansea). This loco lasted in service until November 1976 but had been reduced to scrap at Swindon Works by May of the following year. Many thanks to Kelvin for sharing his work with us all.

DEPG NEWS – the next Newsletter has been further delayed by the need to prioritise the investigation work on D7018, but we expect to be able to distribute the Newsletter early in October. Work has begun on the 2024 Calendar and we hope to be able to sell an increased quantity this year.
A Board Meeting was held at Williton on Saturday 16th September. A synopsis will be produced as soon as possible and shared with DEPG members. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday 28th October.
