The WSR re-opened on SATURDAY 22nd MARCH with three out-and-back services originating at Bishops Lydeard (RED timetable) with the surprise of Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) working the 12:25 departure from Bishops Lydeard, covering for visiting steam loco GWR 2-8-0 number 2807 that could not be readied for service in time. Hopefully, we will get to see the heavy freight loco working on the line in the near future, while it is on loan from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

The ’33’ made the most of her opportunity and delivered a fine performance on a 6-coach train, half of which was dedicated to the very popular FISH & CHIP SPECIAL service which was fully booked on the first day, making a great start to the new running season !

The WSR’s Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) was also in action on the Saturday, undergoing driver refresher training in preparation for working the 12:25 departure from Bishops Lydeard on Sunday 23rd. This unit will be in use again on Sunday 30th March, also on the 12:25 departure and the 14:20 return.

The WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) was out and about on Saturday 22nd March 2025 on driver refresher training duties. The rusty-looking rails show that the ‘up’ loop has not seen much use in recent months, but the first day of service sorted that out. The re-opening of the line was a culmination of a huge effort by staff and volunteers along the length of the line, and everything was made ready for the big day, so WELL DONE to all involved in this massive effort !

    D7017 UPDATE

Inside the loco shed at Minehead, more progress was being made on Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 as a combined team of WSR staff and DEPG volunteers worked on the bodywork repairs that need to be completed before a full repaint can be carried out.

The work being done on both of the ‘Hymek’ sisters is taking a high priority because of the need to have these locos back in use during their 50th anniversary in preservation. The WSR have very kindly allocated the weekend of Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August for showcasing ‘Hymek’ haulage, and we are working on the event format and hope to make an announcement in conjunction with the WSR very soon. Meanwhile, SAVE THE DATES !

We are delighted to announce that the revised target for donations to the D7017 bodywork overhaul fund HAS BEEN REACHED, so a BIG THANK YOU goes out to the 80 people who have donated to this project so far, keeping it moving forward to ensure that the loco will be back in service in time for the WSR’s Summer Diesel Festival (5-7th June).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FANTASTIC SUPPORT !

The repair work is going to cost around £15,000 so the amount raised will cover most of the work being done on the loco, the remainder being provided from the DEPG’s general fund. The sub-contract route was taken to make sure that the loco gets repaired in time to be able to take pole position in the celebration of 50 years of ‘Hymek’ preservation that will take place on 30th and 31st of August this year.

The fund now stands at £12,492 and will remain open until the work is completed to make sure that we have sufficient funding to cover any unexpected costs, so don’t despair if you haven’t yet donated, because we can still accept your donation !

All funds donated via this appeal will be allocated to returning D7017 to service in time for the forthcoming season.

Can you help ? Click here to donate £17 to D7017 !

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – with the need to get Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 into the loco shed for engine maintenance and a repaint, it became necessary to get the partially-dismantled ‘B’ bogie out of the loco shed and move it to No. 1 road outside, where it will be covered by a tarpaulin and worked on during good weather days. The team also needed to shift the various removed bogie parts from the loco shed to the relevant container, so quite a bit of shifting and tidying was involved.

The result is that both bogies are now outdoors and available for volunteers to work on. When the weather does not co-operate, we have a container full of parts that need to be cleaned, inspected and painted, so we won’t run out of work just yet !

D1010 – the partially-dismantled ‘B’ bogie has now been moved out of the loco shed and is on Number 1 road where further dismantling will take place. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 22nd March 2025 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Our appeals for MORE VOLUNTEERS are working but WE STILL NEED MORE HELP to get this huge loco back on the rails, so please get in touch by using our CONTACT FORM if you are able to join the team.

As mentioned before, apologies to those D1010 sponsors who have yet to receive the photos and certificates for the patches that they have sponsored. The weather is improving, so it won’t be long before we will be able to re-start the engraving work.

Rest assured that every sponsor will receive their certificate and the details of where to find their sponsored patch. We will be making a further push for funds soon, because we have some big ticket items for refurbishment, including the remaining cardan shafts and 32 springs from the suspension system.

MANY THANKS to all who have sponsored and supported the RESTORATION of D1010 !

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – the work on this loco was concluded on Saturday 22nd March 2025 by the issuing of a Vehicle Inspection and Brake Test (VIBT) certificate that allows the loco to return to service. The plan is for the loco to move back to Bishops Lydeard on Friday 28th March. This loco has occupied the loco shed at Williton for six months and has received lashings of tender loving care, but her time has come to get back to work and the remaining bodywork repairs and repaint will have to wait until next winter. Almost all of our volunteers have played a part in getting this work done, so thank you all and let’s get on to the next job !

D4107 – the loco has completed her Vehicle Inspection & Brake Test (VIBT) and has now been released to return to traffic at Bishops Lydeard. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 22nd March 2025 by Josh Brinsford © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – the oil leak that caused this loco to shut down after working a ballast train on Saturday 15th March was the result of a fracture in the oil filter housing, so the housing had to be removed and replaced with a spare taken from our stock. The repair work was completed on Sunday 23rd March, so the loco is mechanically sound again. There are a few outstanding maintenance tasks to be completed, then the loco will be released back to traffic and will probably move to the Minehead end of the line as the ‘Thunderbird’ loco and in readiness for the first scheduled diesel-loco-hauled service of the year, the 10:00 Minehead diagram on Saturday 10th May.

The spare oil filter housing has been installed along the side of the engine block and painted, making Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) mechanically sound once again. Pictured at Williton on Sunday 23rd March 2025 by Ian Robins © CC BY-NC 3.0

THIS LOCO WILL BE HEADING FOR THE SPA VALLEY RAILWAY for the weekend of 13th to the 15th June 2025 to participate in their ‘Cuckoo Line Gala’ event !

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – as already reported, this loco has been very busy and is probably looking forward to swapping places with her sister during this coming weekend, so that she can get some rest !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – covered previously, making good and steady progress.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – the transmission testing work that was reported in a previous roundup had to be paused because of an issue with the Directional Interlock Contactor, so the team set about investigating the operation of the interlock mechanism to the fullest extent that they could, without the engine running. Another attempt at completing the static testing was made on Tuesday 25th March, slightly outside the date range of this roundup, but the news is such that an exception needs to be made.

THE DIRECTION CHANGING PHASE OF THE STATIC TEST HAS BEEN COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY !

The next phase of testing will involve the loco getting some light exercise in the yard under controlled conditions, and will take place when circumstances permit. Let’s take this step by step !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the need to prepare sister D9526 for her period of occupation of the loco shed has drawn resources away from D9518 temporarily, but work continues on the electrical rewiring and on the body panel restorations. We will include some photos in the next edition of roundup.

Quality work needs to be funded, so we will continue to appeal for funds to support the work, right up to the point where the loco is completed. Any surplus will then be used to ensure her proper care and upkeep. If you like what we are doing, please make a donation via our website (click on the icon below) or by bank app or by sending a cheque to the DEPG at WillitonTHANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco received an underframe wash using our new Erhle HD623 hot wash machine at Williton yard on Saturday 22nd March and was then shunted into the loco shed at the head of a very unusual consist that was captured by the Williton Station Railcam and is shown below. The purpose of the incarceration is to perform engine maintenance (for which the bonnet needs to be removed) and a paint refresh in time for her appearance at the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL 2025.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and was one of the participants in an evening ‘BR Blue’ photo shoot at Grosmont on Sunday 23rd March 2025. If you went along to this event and have any photos of this loco that you would be willing to share, please get in touch via our CONTACT FORM and we will be happy to feature some of your work in a forthcoming edition of roundup. Thanks !

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco has overcome her recent spate of stater motor issues, thanks to a nice reconditioned motor from ICS in Preston. The unreliable motor and our useless spare have now been sent to Preston to be turned into one good reconditioned unit that will sit on our spare parts shelf and be at hand in case the trouble persists – which it probably won’t, now that we have a spare being organised – but such is life !

If you can help by donating your time to any of these projects, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

BOOK REVIEW: The sale of books, both new and pre-owned, is a valuable source on income for the DEPG and is a growth area, especially as the search engines regularly return DEPG results on the first page, greatly increasing the chances of making a sale and boosting DEPG coffers.

We are always on the lookout for donations of pre-owned books featuring any class of diesel or electric traction. We often receive mixed donations that include steam-era books as well, but we make sure that the steam titles get passed to our colleagues in other voluntary groups around the WSR, so MANY THANKS to those who have donated and if you have books to pass on, then PLEASE KEEP DONATING !

This week, we feature ‘THE CHANGING RAIL SCENE IN SOUTH WALES 1990s – PRESENT‘ by John Jackson as another example of a pre-owned book with an almost new feel, at the excellent price of £7.50.

There are many other pre-owned book titles on our online store – click here for details.

ON SHED: last week, we featured a photo of Class 45 ‘Peak’ 45070 (D122) about to restart her ‘light engine’ run on the up relief at Cardiff Central Station. This resulted in some feedback from regular contributor NEALE LONG who provided us with the following information:

“Yet another fascinating image from the late Mike Evans, this time of a Class 45 at Cardiff ‘Light Engine (LE)’. I did quite a few miles behind these rugged and capable Type 4’s and it is good to see an image of these fine locomotives in South Wales. The caption is almost certainly correct in that it was a Canton-Pengam LE working for the afternoon Pengam-Newcastle/Edinburgh 4S88/4E88 (can’t recall when the service was cut back to Newcastle), therefore the depicted working was either 0S88 or 0E88.

As regards other Class 45 workings, these included steel traffic to Newport and Cardiff from Scunthorpe and Teeside, internal traffic to Margam from Severn Tunnel Junction. West Wales petroleum traffic would have been in the hands of Class 47s and double headed Class 37s until the arrival of the Class 60s in the early 1990s. The oil working that would have produced a Class 45 was the Gainsborough/Tuxford-Llandarcy Oil Refinery crude oil working, formerly a Class 37 working which swapped an ER Class 37 for a WR Class 37 at Washwood Heath and vice versa.”

MANY THANKS to Neale for providing this information. Let’s see what he makes of this one:

Class 31 31200 (D5624) looked dull and dreary on a similar day in December 1985 as she waited at the head of a rake of newspaper vans at the Riverside platforms of Cardiff Central Station. The traffic was lost and the platforms demolished by 1994, but the loco lasted until 2007, a remarkable working life of 47 years. Photo by the late Mike Evans © CC BY-NC 3.0

DEPG NEWS – we at the DEPG are rather partial to nice pieces of German engineering, so the Ehrle HD623 was a natural choice, especially as it was recommended by friends at Cranmore on the East Somerset Railway. Local area supplier WEST COUNTRY ENVIRONMENTAL provided us with the machine and with the training, and we were off to a clean start within hours of the machine being delivered. We have plenty of work lined up for this competent piece of kit, that’s for sure.

The DEPG is a charity and is run entirely by volunteers, many of whom give both their time and their money to the continuance of work on the locos in the DEPG fleet. If you have been enjoying the roundup for free, have you considered joining us for just £1 a month ? You can then add your name to all of those helping out on the above projects and play your part in the future of our locos for a lot less than the price of a cup of coffee!

JOIN US using whichever membership class is appropriate for your situation and means. CLICK HERE or on the image below or use the QR code to get the details.

If you would like to go one step further and come along to help with the work on the locos in our fleet, then please use our CONTACT FORM to let us know that you would like to volunteer and we will respond with more details.

We look forward to hearing from you !

The WSR will re-open on SATURDAY 22nd MARCH with three out-and-back services originating at Bishops Lydeard (RED timetable) with the surprise of Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33057) working the 12:25 departure from Bishops Lydeard, covering for a steam loco that could not be readied in time. The Sunday service will operate to the same timetable but with the WSR’s Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) in action on the 12:25 departure from Bishops Lydeard.

To prepare for the re-opening, a huge amount of work has been carried out along the length of the line, encompassing the track, the trains, the stations, the museums, in fact everything that needed to be ready for the big day. WELL DONE to all involved in this massive effort !

Our locos have been in use on the ‘Tidy Trains’ that work along the length of the line gathering the unwanted items that accumulate at the lineside, and also on the ballast trains that needed to be hauled to the various permanent way worksites. Unfortunately, Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) developed a fault during a ballast working from Dunster to Williton last Saturday, her engine shutting down automatically to protect against low oil pressure, luckily just as she came back into the DEPG yard after completing her duties.

This gave an opportunity for Barclay 578 (ROF 1) to go to the rescue and haul the delinquent ’33’ into the yard for attention. The cause of the issue was a crack that had developed in the oil filter housing, allowing engine oil to leak out and eventually cause a drop in oil pressure. The crack was along the line of an old repair from BR days, so it had lasted a reasonable amount of time – probably more than 30 years !

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) came to a standstill while entering the yard at Williton on Saturday 15th March 2025. The loco had just returned from hauling a ballast train from Dunster when her engine shut down due to low oil pressure caused by a fracture in the oil filter housing. Elsewhere along the line, DEPG volunteers were at work supporting our WSR colleagues in resolving an issue that was preventing the recently-acquired pre-owned ‘cherry picker’ Road-Rail Vehicle (RRV) from switching from rail to road mode. The issue was traced to water ingress that had resulted in the corrosion of some relays in the electrical circuitry. A temporary repair was made to allow the vehicle to operate in road mode, and a more thorough repair will be effected when the RRV reaches Williton.

    WSR NEWS

The WSR is preparing for the return of public services on the weekend of 22/23 March and everything is looking good ! The lineside has been cleared of overgrowth in many areas and this will significantly improve the view for the passengers along several wooded areas of the line. The stations are ready, the coaches have been cleaned and inspected, so it’s going to be great to see the railway come back to life !

    RAILBUS W79978 NEWS:

Although not part of the DEPG fleet, we maintain a link on our website to this very interesting machine from the late 1950s because it is owned by DEPG member Martin Rouse and was used on the Western Region for several years, initially between Swindon and Kemble and then on the Bodmin branch in Cornwall, before moving to Scotland. The Railbus is undergoing a complete and thorough restoration in stages, which is an interesting approach because it allows it to operate on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway from time to time. Click here or on the image further below to read Martin’s latest update.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – with the pressure on to get Class 09 shunter D4107 completed and progress the various tasks on the ‘Hymeks’, the team on D1010 decided to enjoy the fine weather and work on the underframe of the loco, rather than be inside the loco shed – and who could blame them because it was a very nice day indeed. The pace of progress on this loco will pick up once the ‘Hymeks’ have been readied for service in this, their 50th, year in preservation. We will have a larger team on site during the coming weekend, so we hope to include some photos in the next edition of roundup.

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – the work on this loco has almost reached a conclusion, but we are left with a snag list comprising a few items that will need to dealt with during this coming weekend. The most significant is an electrical check to confirm that the new Electronic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is actually regulating, and the ‘real life’ testing for this might require the loco to be used to shunt some vehicles within Williton station limits. This will also allow a power check to be carried out, to make sure that all 6 cylinders are firing properly since the overhaul of the fuel system. If all goes well, the loco will leave for Bishops Lydeard during the following week.

D4107 – the loco is almost ready to return to service at Bishops Lydeard, but some snags delayed her departure, so the loco was re-positioned with Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 (ROF 1) going into the loco shed instead, for further attention to her somewhat unreliable starter motor. Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – as already stated, this loco developed an oil leak that was sufficient to cause her to shut down following her work on a ballast train last weekend. The cause of the leak was a fracture in the oil filter housing, in fact this was a failure of a previously repaired fracture dating back to BR days. The loco was itted with a spare housing on Sunday 16th March, but issues with the threads prevented the job from being completed. One more weekend should solve it.

The oil filter housing of Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) developed a fracture along the line of a previous repair from BR days, resulting in a loss of oil pressure which caused the engine to shut down. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 15th March 2025 by Ashley Harris © CC BY-NC 3.0

THIS LOCO WILL BE HEADING FOR THE SPA VALLEY RAILWAY for the weekend of 13th to the 15th June 2025 to participate in their ‘Cuckoo Line Gala’ event

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – as already reported, this loco has been very busy and is probably looking forward to swapping places with her sister at some point, so that she can get some rest !

LATE NEWS: this loco has been rostered to work the 12:25 service from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and return on Saturday 22nd March 2025 to cover for a steam loco that could not be readied for service in time.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – covered previously, making good and steady progress.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – the transmission testing work that was reported in the previous roundup had flagged up a possible issue with the Directional Interlock Contactor, so the team set about investigating the operation of the interlock mechanism to the fullest extent that they could, without the engine running. Another attempt at completing the static testing will be made in the near future, when circumstances permit.

Meanwhile, an oil leak from the transmission heat exchanger had become apparent and resulted in the heat exchanger having to be disassembled in situ, so that a flange seal could be replaced. This work has now been completed and will be tested during the next engine run.

D7018 – transmission team member Geoff is looking very serious as he starts work on removing the end cover of the transmission heat exchanger. Pictured at Williton on Monday 11th March 2025 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D7018 – and this is why – here is a view of the end cover of the transmission heat exchanger, showing just how many bolts had to be undone (some in awkward places) to get the flange apart! Pictured at Williton on Monday 11th March 2025 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D7018 – looking down on the two directional solenoids (marked R1 and R2), the red actuator lever and the linkage for the Directional Interlock Contactor can be seen on the left. This linkage moves when the transmission engages a direction, and if that direction is that same as selected by the driver, it releases the interlock, allowing the transmission to take power. Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – no photos this week, but fear not, the team have been actively working on the electrical rewiring and on the body panels that will soon be needed as the loco takes on her final shape. Work on the engine rebuild has also restarted and we will include some photos in the next edition of roundup.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco will enter the loco shed this coming Saturday 22nd March and will undergo engine maintenance and receive a paint refresh in time for her appearance at the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL 2025.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is based at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and was in use on Wednesday 12th February 2025 when she worked a rake of Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) from Pickering to Grosmont. We hope to see this loco in regular use this season and we will try to provide advance notice where possible.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – further trouble with the starter motor on this loco has caused us to invest in a fully reconditioned unit, which is now in our hands and ready to be installed this coming weekend. The unreliable starter motor will then be removed from the loco and sent to specialist overhaulers ICS in Preston for reconditioning. We will then have a spare on the shelf !

This week, we feature ‘SEVERN TUNNEL JUNCTION‘ by P D Rendall as a great example of an pre-owned book with an almost new feel, at the excellent price of £7.50.

There are many other pre-owned book titles on our online store – click here for details.

ON SHED: last week, we featured a photo of our very own 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ in her early blue livery without the BR logo, kindly provided by regular contributor Trevor Tremethick. This week, we are back across the Bristol Channel to Cardiff Central for another photo from the collection of the late Mike Evans, this time featuring Class 45 ‘Peak’ 45070 (D122) about to restart her ‘light engine’ run on the up relief, possibly only as far as the Freightliner terminal at Pengam, a few miles to the East. The ‘Peaks’ were regulars at Cardiff, sometimes on passenger workings from the Midlands but most often on heavy freights including the Milford Haven oil tanks and the various steel trains to and from the North.

DEPG NEWS – the activities at Williton and elsewhere on the line may be putting us under pressure, but we are making progress on all fronts, including improvements in infrastructure and equipment. We have just ordered a brand-new hot-wash cleaning machine that will help us improve the standard of cleanliness of our locos and help to extend the periods between re-paints (which are very expensive). We will cover this in the next roundup, once we have had to chance to get familiar with the machine and learned how to use it to the best effect.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 burst into life at Williton on Saturday 8th March 2025 and emitted the wonderful sound of ‘Maybach Music’ as the engine started up for the first time since August 2023. Extract from a video by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

The yard at Williton was treated to some wonderful ‘Maybach Music’ on Saturday 8th March 2025 when Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was started up for the first time since her transmission malfunction back in August 2023. The engine had been carefully prepared in advance by Neil and Bob and pre-heated, so one press on the START button was enough to get her started and she ran cleanly and smoothly. The correct pressures were recorded on the torque converter gauges, so the engine was allowed to continue running so that the programme of testing of the repaired transmission could begin.

The loco had been coupled between Class 33 D6566 (33048) and Class 14 D9526, both with their brakes fully applied using air pressure supplied by the ’33’. This ensured that no uncommanded movement could take place and allowed the testing to proceed safely. The programme of work had been mapped out in stages, each of which needed to be ‘all clear’ before moving on to the next stage, basically as follows:

    1. Prepare the engine, check the function of the STOP switches.
    2. Start the engine, check for the correct transmission pressure sequencing.
    3. Stop the engine, compare notes and prepare for the next stage.
    4. Start the engine, check the correction function of the reverser.
    5. Stop the engine, compare notes and prepare for the next stage.
    6. Start the engine and perform power checks.
    7. Stop the engine, compare notes and prepare for the next stage.
    8. Start the engine and check for correct gear selection function.
    9. Stop the engine, compare notes and conclude or extend the static testing.

We did not get to the power checks (stage 6) because the reverser, although changing over between forward and reverse at the transmission itself, was not showing the correct indications in the cab. The device known as the Directional Interlock Contactor is the most likely source of the trouble and these notoriously tricky electro-mechanical gizmos need some very careful adjustment to make them operate reliably. No doubt the issue will be resolved in the coming week or so, and we can try again.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was displaying two red lights when set for the forward direction at Williton on Saturday 8th March 2025. This fault condition prevented further testing, but should be a fairly quick fix. Extract from the BR manual and extract from a video clip by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

We won’t count our chickens just yet, but we do have the confidence to carry on with the testing programme and resolve any issues as they are revealed by the testing. A step-by-step approach will pay dividends in the end. MANY THANKS to the Transmission Team and to Neil and Bob for their hard work and contribution in getting us to this level of testing !

    D7017 UPDATE

The work being done on both of the ‘Hymek’ sisters is taking a high priority because of the need to have these locos back in use during their 50th anniversary in preservation. The WSR have very kindly allocated the weekend of Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August for showcasing ‘Hymek’ haulage, and we are working on the event format and hope to make an announcement in conjunction with the WSR very soon. Meanwhile, SAVE THE DATES !

We are delighted to announce that the revised target for donations to the D7017 bodywork overhaul fund HAS BEEN REACHED, so a BIG THANK YOU goes out to the 75 people who have donated to this project so far, keeping it moving forward to ensure that the loco will be back in service in time for the WSR’s Summer Diesel Festival (5-7th June).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FANTASTIC SUPPORT !

The repair work is expected to cost around £15,000 so the amount raised will cover most of the work being done on the loco, the remaining £3,000 being provided from the DEPG’s general fund. The sub-contract route was taken to make sure that the loco gets repaired during the winter and is able to take pole position in the celebration of 50 years of ‘Hymek’ preservation that will take place on 30th and 31st of August this year.

The fund now stands at £12,236 and will remain open until the work is completed to make sure that we have sufficient funding to cover any unexpected costs, so don’t despair if you haven’t yet donated, because we can still accept your donation !

All funds donated via this appeal will be allocated to returning D7017 to service in time for the forthcoming season.

Can you help ? Click here to donate £17 to D7017 !

If you want to help with this short-term appeal, please make a donation via our website (click on the icons above or below) or by bank app or by sending a cheque to the DEPG at WillitonTHANK YOU VERY MUCH !

Here are some photos of the progress being made on D7017 at Minehead and at Williton:

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – with the need to move Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 to Number 1 road so that she could be sandwiched between Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048) and Class 14 D9526, the ‘A’ bogie from D1010 had to be moved to number 3 road, so the opportunity was taken to make use of the available space and the fork lift truck to lift the three cardan shafts out of the bogie. The bolts had already been slackened on a previous weekend so the work could be completed without too much bad language, but the heavy and awkward parts probably deserved the disrespect that they did receive ! Elsewhere, Roy continued his quest to get the ‘A’ cooler group paintwork completed, while others contemplated the work needed on the engines (nothing major, but time consuming and in need of a large and clean working area). The pace of progress on this loco will pick up once the ‘Hymeks’ have been readied for service in this, their 50th, year in preservation.

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – the two sprung buffers that have been loaned by the WSR and were last in use as platform buffers at BATH GREEN PARK STATION have now been cleaned up, repainted and fitted to the loco, which is now getting very close to being returned to service, in fact the departure date has been set for Monday 17th March when this loco should leave Williton and return to her usual home at Bishops Lydeard. A lot of work has been done and another busy weekend will see the remainder of the work completed, so MANY THANKS to our team of volunteers for their combined efforts to get this loco back to work on time !

D4107 – the pair of sprung buffers that have been loaned by the WSR were last in use at Bath Green Park Station back in 1966 and were in need of some TLC, duly administered by Tony at Williton on Tuesday 4th March 2025. Photo by Tim Zilkha © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – in addition to shunting the yard and assisting with the risk mitigations for D7018, this loco has been fitted with an overhauled brake slack adjuster and has been readied for action, with a booked working on Saturday 15th March between Williton and Dunster in connection with the Infrastructure Department’s ballast train.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is the Duty Loco based at Bishops Lydeard and has been in use between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren on several occasions for crew training purposes. The loco now needs an ‘A’ exam (every 50 hours) which will be carried out at Bishops Lydeard by Ian R on Saturday 15th March, after which she will be used to prepare the ‘Tidy Train’ for a run along the line on the following day. This loco is also booked to work the ballast trains to the track relaying site at Tribble Bridge on several days during next week.

    Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – covered previously.

    Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – covered previously.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the electrical rewiring work continues to make steady progress, with work also taking place on restoring the various body panels from their ‘as-stored’ condition to the ‘restored’ condition, which often involves quite a bit of effort due to the effects of corrosion on these relatively thin steel fabrications. Work on the engine rebuilt took a pause last week due to other priorities, but progress will resume again soon.

D9518 (NCB Ashington No. 7) – the restoration of this bonnet section involves a lot of time and effort, but volunteer Andy P is a patient and diligent worker and will do a fine and thorough job. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 8th March 2025 by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

We often receive mixed donations that include steam-era books as well, but we make sure that the steam titles get passed to our colleagues in other voluntary groups around the WSR, so MANY THANKS to those who have donated and if you have books to pass on, then PLEASE KEEP DONATING !

This week we feature a bargain with a marked-down price because of a damaged jacket. This book is a well known title featuring the mighty DELTICS of British Railways and is available for only £7.50 plus p&p.

There are many other pre-owned book titles on our online storeclick here for details.

ON SHED: last week, we featured a photo of ‘Slim Jim Crompton’ 33202 (D6587) on shed at Cardiff Canton displaying a Southern Region headcode of ’19’. The small batch of 12 ‘Slim Jims’ were made to the narrower loading gauge required for passage through the non-standard tunnels on the Hastings Line, the story of which is well told on Wikipedia (click here to go to Wikipedia). These locos were initially kept on a tight leash, but the improvements to the line that came with the 1986 electrification released these non-standard locos into the general pool and they became more scattered. The example pictured at Cardiff Canton had probably worked in on a service from Portsmouth and should have been displaying the code ’89’ (the code ’19’ applying to services between Waterloo and Epsom or Leatherhead, Surrey !).

This week, we have a photo of our very own 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ in her early blue livery without the BR logo. According to our Loco Timeline page, the loco carried this livery between August 1973 and October 1976, which ties in perfectly with the below image that was captured by Trevor Tremethick at Long Rock on 3rd November 1974. MANY THANKS to Trevor for sharing more of his work with us !

Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ was pictured in late autumn sunshine while passing Long Rock depot, Penzance on 3rd November 1974 with the 4A13 14:45 Penzance to Paddington perishables. The loco is in rail blue livery with full yellow ends, but was not carrying a BR logo at this time. Photo by Trevor Tremethick © CC BY-NC 3.0

A welcome improvement in the weather provided an opportunity to photograph several locomotives basking in the afternoon sunshine at Williton on Saturday 1st March 2025. From left to right, Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33048), Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526, Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 (ROF 1) and Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018. Photo by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

Working at a busy diesel traction maintenance depot with like-minded and knowledgeable people while surrounded by one’s favourite locos cannot be considered as a hardship at any time of the year, but it feels even better when the weather improves ! The cold but clear weather brought some much-appreciated and warming sunshine, making outdoor tasks significantly more attractive than being in the loco shed – in fact it was colder inside the shed than outside !

For some, the need to complete the time-sensitive work on Class 09 shunter D4107 (09019) and the re-wiring on Class 14 D9518 (NCB Ashington No 7) compelled them to work indoors, but the team working on D1010 were more than happy to do a bit more scraping and cleaning on the loco body – outside in the sunshine.

Class 14 D9526 is currently stabled outdoors on No 1 road, but will move into the loco shed as soon as Class 09 D4107 (09019) comes out. We are getting close to that changeover, which will then allow Terry and his team to undertake some engine maintenance work on D9526 and allow Colin G to deal with some bodyside corrosion and refresh the paintwork, with all tasks to be completed in good time for the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL that will take place from Thursday 5th through Saturday 7th June (with a mixed traction day on the Sunday).

We are delighted to announce that the revised target for donations to the D7017 bodywork overhaul fund HAS BEEN REACHED, so a BIG THANK YOU goes out to the 74 people who have donated to this project so far, keeping it moving forward to ensure that the loco will be back in service in time for the WSR’s Summer Diesel Festival (5-7th June).

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FANTASTIC SUPPORT !

The repair work is expected to cost around £15,000 so the new target will cover most of the work being done on the loco, the remaining £3,000 being provided from the DEPG’s general fund. The sub-contract route was taken to make sure that the loco gets repaired during the winter and is able to take pole position in the celebration of 50 years of ‘Hymek’ preservation that will take place on 30th and 31st of August this year.

The fund will remain open until the work is completed to make sure that we have sufficient funding to cover any unexpected costs, so don’t despair if you haven’t yet donated, because we can still accept your donation !

    WSR NEWS

The month-long pre-season training program is almost complete. The weekend of 8/9 March will bring the volunteer briefing sessions and train crew refresher sessions to a close so that the focus can switch to preparing for the return of public services on the weekend of 22/23 March.

The crew refresher training involves duty loco Class 33 D6575 (33048) operating between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren. Attending these mandatory training sessions does deplete the available hours for volunteering at Williton in the short term, but it is essential to ensure safe and efficient operation of the railway, so it takes first priority.

The WSR have published their running calendar for 2025 on their website and social media channels, and we have updated our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page including provisional loco allocations, some of which are subject to change to align with the availability of the locos and the crews. As the information becomes more refined, we will update our page and send out a DIESELGEN bulletin with the clarification. Click here or on the banner below to view the provisional allocations:

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – it was a case of more of the same for this loco this week, with the task of scraping off the 50-year-old crust of dirt and grime from the underframe continuing, but with the benefit of some warming sunshine, some of which managed to get far enough under the loco to brighten the task for our volunteers. Back in the shed, Jon T progressed the re-paint of the Serck motor and fan from the ‘A’ cooler group, making it ready for re-installation into the frame. The detailed technical work of preparing the list of bogie parts took place in the nice warm messroom !

The bitterly cold and/or wet weather is preventing us from spending outdoor time on the engraving, so we will need to leave this work a little longer, at least until the temperature is back in (positive) double digits.

Class 09 D4107 (09019) – we are delighted to report that we have now acquired SIX buffers for this loco, two of the sprung type that are already in our hands and will be fitted to the loco so that it can re-enter service at the earliest date possible, and four serviceable Oleo hydraulic types that we have purchased from another group and will be fitted to the loco at some convenient time in the future. The two sprung buffers have been loaned by the WSR and were last in use as platform buffers at BATH GREEN PARK STATION, which closed to public services in March 1966, so they have been waiting 59 years for their next opportunity!

The above photo shows the buffers at BATH GREEN PARK STATION and has been reproduced from THE RAILWAY HUB website which can be found online by clicking on this link

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco will undergo some planned maintenance while resident at Williton.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is the Duty Loco based at Bishops Lydeard and will be in use on Friday 7th and Sunday 9th of March between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren for crew training purposes.

    Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – covered previously.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – the re-installation of the transmission continued with the re-connecting of the electrical solenoids and the direction interlock contactors. The transmission was filled with fresh oil, but efforts to re-fill the cooling system were halted by the need to replace a damaged hose. The replacement has now been obtained and fitted. Another task that has to be attended to before the running season starts is to get the spare fire extinguisher bottles tested and recharged, so they can be used to replace the cylinders that are carried on the locos. A complication is that the ‘Hymeks’ use the ‘Pyrene’ type rather than the ‘Kidde’ type that is used on some other locos, so we have to keep two types of bottle in stock, some of which are rather old, as the photo below shows.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the work on the electrical rewiring is making very good progress, with new cable runs being installed between the engine compartment and the cab-mounted electrical control cubicle. The engine work is also moving forward, with a steady supply of new and refurbished components reaching the ‘Tuesday Team’ volunteers, for re-assembly into the engine block. Great work by all involved !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco will enter the loco shed as soon as D4107 vacates and will undergo engine maintenance and receive a paint refresh in time for her appearance at the WSR’s SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL 2025.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – as previously stated, this loco is now back in service after having an issue with her starter motor !

BOOK REVIEW: This is a new release from Pen & Sword, another in the series of locomotive studies by ANTHONY P. SAYER and no doubt destined for similar positive reviews, as has been the case for other publications from this author (click here for details). His target this time is the short-lived Class 23 ‘Baby Deltic’, a rare example of a product from the English Electric stable that did not deliver on it’s promises. Anthony digs deep into the background and presents the story in his usual style, complete with fine detail.

Price £32 – NOTE: RRP is £35 so save £3 by buying from the DEPG !

Click here to obtain your copy of this new book.

Other books in this popular series are also available from the DEPG online store (classes 1417 and 22)

Four new book titles have recently been added to our online store – click on the images below for details:

The Railways of South Wales 1975-1995 Part 1 – by Michael Rhodes – price £21.95 The Berks & Hants Line – 40 Years from the Lineside – by Stephen Dance – price £22.95
Railways of Cornwall – A Decade of Change – Part 1 – by Keith Barrow – price £20.95 Winners & Losers – Loco Bashing Tales from the 1990s – by Andy Chard – £18.95

ON SHED: in response to the response about headcode 2V48 carried by D1069 ‘WESTERN VANGUARD’ that we featured last week, we received the following alternative possibility from well-known photographer and author ROGER GEACH:

“Good work by your man on this headcode, but it could also be 2B48  with the ‘V’ in place of the ‘B’. I’ve often seen this letter out of place.

2B48 was the 2015 Exeter – Newton Abbot which 1069 worked on 4th December 1974. The next day it was on 4M05 1250 Penzance – Crewe vans, so Cardiff does not fit on that date, but we don’t have a huge amount of sightings for 1069 that month.

I would say the display of headcodes being correct on the loco was not 100 per cent with the further west one went, the worse it got !”

Many thanks to Roger for responding and sharing this information with us all.

To change the theme this week, we return to Cardiff Canton and the photographic collection of the late Mike Evans, but this time with a ‘Slim Jim Crompton’ 33202 (D6587) on shed displaying a Southern Region headcode of ’19’. That’s all that I am going to say about this, and we look forward to receiving your feedback on the activities of this loco in what we believe to have been August of 1985.

DEPG NEWS – the leaking roof of the Portacabin that serves as the classroom and meeting room at Williton has been causing some concern of late, but this issue has now been solved by DEPG volunteer and trustee David Oswald who has constructed a new roof on top of the failed roof, with sufficient strength and substance to outlast the rest of the structure ! Well done David, and thank you very much !
