After completing every one of her booked duties (plus some that were booked for her sister) throughout July and August, Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) returned to Williton after her last working on Saturday 27th August 2022 so that her brake blocks could be replaced. Pictured shortly after her arrival, alongside Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 (left) and Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 (ROF 1) by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

After four weeks of regular (and unexpected) working under the BLUE and YELLOW timetables, Saturday 27th August marked the return of steam-only rostering on the BLUE timetable, except for the three weekends where our diesels will cover the 10:00 Minehead departures and subsequent 80-mile diagrams (see our Diesel Running Dates page). The need to replace the failed heat exchanger in Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) had transferred the workload to sister D6575 (33 057) who performed admirably throughout, but her brake blocks had worn down to the limit and she was brought back to Williton upon completion of her duties last Saturday. The changing of the 16 cast-iron brake blocks was performed on Sunday morning by Ian, Tom and Martin with a subsequent inspection and brake test being completed before the loco was declared as available to the WSR at 13:30 that day. Well done all !

This weekend, we have Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 running for 80 miles on Saturday 3rd and again on Sunday 4th, so please do come along an enjoy the ‘Maybach Music’ that will entertain you throughout your journey. We also have the DEPG Annual General Meeting (AGM) at 14:00 on Saturday 3rd, so our members will be treated to ‘live action’ when the loco departs from Williton at 15:17 heading towards Bishops Lydeard.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 will be working the 10:00 Minehead to Bishops Lydeard diagram (2 x round trips, 80 miles total) on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September 2022. The loco was pictured while departing from the yard at Williton on Saturday 13th August 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

We have kept our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page updated throughout all of the recent timetable and traction changes, with links to the WSR timetables, so this page can be used as a one-stop-shop for diesel-hauled services on the WSR. MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE TRAVELLED for supporting this year’s DIESEL RUNNING program on the WSR. The season is not over yet – there is MORE TO COME so click on the banner below to visit the page and get the details:

The usual caveats of loco availability apply, but we aim to deliver the published program of running with the locos indicated and we will provide as much advance notice of any change as possible, using our DIESELGEN and Twitter feeds, so please sign up to keep up to date.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – we continue to progress with the work needed to return this loco to service. This week, we have been attending to the battery box frames and also doing some adjustments to get the headcode frames to fit nicely. After some delay, we have also restarted work on the transmission, with the third stage torque converter being dismantled last Saturday, leaving only the first stage to be separated from the shaft. Many thanks to all of our volunteers for their massive effort on this massive locomotive !

Please consider SPONSORING A PATCH because there is plenty of fresh metal that still needs engraving and it is in a prime location, right at the front of the loco at ‘A’ end. Thank you in advance for your support !

Although bodywork repairs have progressed well, we still have a lot of rubbing down and painting to do, so PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND HELP IF YOU CAN !

D1010 – the apertures for the headcode frames needed some adjustment to allow the frames to fit properly. This entailed altering the height at which the almost-vertical front sheet was folded inwards to create the bottom edge of the aperture. Job done! D1010 – last week, we showed the badly corroded steel section and this week we are showing the repair, which makes use of a piece of steel box section from a redundant steel table. We economise on steel purchases whenever we can. Pictured at Williton on 23rd August 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – this partially-dismantled section of the turbine rail of the Voith L630rV transmission shows the exposed guide wheel from the third stage torque converter at the top. The large helical gear on the input shaft is just visible through the rectangular aperture. Transmission experts Andy Venn (left) and Paul Koch visited Williton on Saturday 27th August 2022 to help us make progress with the repair of this 60-year-old piece of complex engineering. Thank you very much ! Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – in this view, the same assembly has been inverted to allow separation of the larger diameter first stage torque converter. The first stage housing has been freed up and has been lifted to expose the turbine, but more dismantling work is needed before the housing can be removed. To support the work that is progressing in multiple areas on D1010, we launched our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER by offering ‘SPONSOR A PATCH’ where you can donate in support of the bodywork repairs that are taking place on D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ and HAVE YOUR NAME ENGRAVED ON THE SPONSORED PATCH or PART.

For the sum of £25, this scheme offers you a chance to sponsor the restoration of this much-loved locomotive, with your personal contribution being recorded and documented on a set of drawings that will be made available at our Williton depot on running days and open days. For those who prefer to remain anonymous, a unique reference number or code word will be allocated and engraved instead.

See our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER web page for more details !

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – the efforts made last week by Ian, Tom and Richard allowed the failed heat exchanger to be removed from the loco early on Saturday morning, and it was on a custom-made pallet and wrapped ready for shipment by midday. The failed unit has been sent to a specialist firm for repair and the turnaround time is expected to be four to five weeks, after which the loco will need to be test run before being declared ready to resume duties.

    Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – covered previously.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – a flurry of activity on this loco last weekend has resulted in the fuel injectors being re-installed and the fuel pipes and covers fitted, leaving only the air intake and cooling system pipework to be reinstated. Then, after checking and priming the fuel system, the engine will be ready for a test run. It may be possible to return the loco to service before the final diesel-hauled service of the year (Sunday 25th September) but it is a little too close for comfort. We can but hope !

This loco is the subject of a fundraising appeal so please follow this link to find out more. We need your help ! In addition to funds, we also need plenty of HANDS. If you love the ‘Teddy Bears’ and you are not already a member of the DEPG, please join us so that you can become one of the team that is going to return D9518 to full operational condition as ‘NCB No. 7‘.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco has been beavering away on the Kent & East Sussex Railway while that railway endured a long period of high fire risk and a resulting ban on the use of steam locomotives. This has resulted in considerably more than 100 hours of running for D9526 during the month of August and to keep the loco properly maintained and available, the local team of Mike, Jon and Will have been working hard to do the inspections and perform the planned and unplanned maintenance that has been necessary. THANK YOU VERY MUCH to Team D9504 for looking after D9526 so well !

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco continues to be in regular service on the NYMR and was particularly busy last Saturday when only one diesel was available for the Whitby services (which run on Network Rail metals and therefore need mainline certified locomotives). This resulted in a ‘baton change’ operation taking place at Levisham, where the service returning from Whitby changed locomotives with the loco heading to Grosmont, to allow the mainline certified loco to head back to Whitby. This unusual movement was captured on film by our local correspondent, Martin Fisher, who provided us with the following images, so THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MARTIN, for sharing these images with us.

Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ was pictured approaching Levisham station on Saturday 27th August 2022 after having left her train beyond the signal on the south side of the station. Photo by Martin Fisher © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ then stopped at the platform in Levisham while mainline certified Class 31 31128 ‘CHARYBDIS’ left her train outside the station on the north side, and ran ‘light engine’ through the station to attach to the train that ‘NORTH STAR’ had left on the south side. Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ then ran northwards and attached to the train that was previously hauled by the Class 31, and then headed south towards Levisham and Pickering. All in a days’ work ! Pictured on Saturday 27th August 2022 by Martin Fisher © CC BY-NC 3.0

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – as mentioned last week, well-known DEPG and WSR volunteer Jon Tooke is going to be completing the livery work on this locomotive, and is planning to do the work from mid-September onwards, so we will report further when the work has progressed.

  • Weekly Roundup – 21-Aug-22

The WSR’s Blue timetable was worked entirely by diesel traction during the recent period of high fire risk. Class member D6575 (33 057) was pictured hauling her train out of Stogumber on the climb to Crowcombe Heathfield on Tuesday 16th August 2022 by Mark Ireland © CC BY-NC 3.0

The WSR introduced a temporary steam ban from Monday 8th through Wednesday 17th August due to the exceptionally dry lineside conditions, so our two ‘Cromptons’ were pressed into service on an almost daily basis. As reported last week, we encountered some issues with Class 33 D6566 (33 048) resulting in some of her turns being worked by Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 and some by the WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU).

After repair at Williton on Saturday 13th, all went well from Sunday onwards with both ‘Cromptons’ back at work, with D6566 starting from the Minehead end of the line and D6575 starting from the Bishops Lydeard end. On the Thursday, the WSR re-introduced steam on the 10:15 from Bishops Lydeard, as a precursor to returning to the normal steam-hauled pattern. Then, that afternoon, the heat exchanger in D6566 finally decided that it had held out for long enough, and the loco arrived at Bishops Lydeard with an oil stain down the side, with oily water escaping from the overflow. The engine oil pressure is higher than the water pressure, so the fracture in the heat exchanger was allowing oil to be pushed into the water – and oil floats on water, so it comes out of the overflow first !

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) was taken out of service upon arrival at Bishops Lydeard with the 14:30 from Minehead on Thursday 16th August 2022 with oily water escaping from the cooling system overflow – the result of a fracture in the heat exchanger. Photo by Tom Courtney © CC BY-NC 3.0

Luckily, D6575 was available at Bishops Lydeard and took over the rest of the diagram which ended in Minehead – but this meant that there was no loco available at Bishops Lydeard to work the 11:00 service to Minehead on Saturday 20th, so a ‘light engine’ move was planned for the Saturday to move the loco back to Bishops Lydeard. This allowed Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 to be attached in front of D6575 at Williton so that D7018 could collect D6566 without any impact on the timetable.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – further progress on this loco this week, with the last bodyside patch being welded in place. Attention now shifts to the battery boxes and headcode boxes. Please consider SPONSORING A PATCH because there is plenty of fresh metal that needs engraving and it is in a prime location, right at the front of the loco at ‘A’ end ! Thank you in advance for your support !

The ‘CAMPAIGNER’ team continue their work on restoring this massive and complex locomotive. Although bodywork repairs have progressed well, we still have a lot of rubbing down and painting to do, so PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND HELP IF YOU CAN !

D1010 – installation of this patch near the leading sand box on ‘A’ side at ‘A’ end marks the completion of the bodyside corrosion repairs that have been needed on this locomotive. MANY THANKS to volunteers Colin F, Geoff and Tim for contributing so many hours of their time to complete this work. Pictured at Williton on 16th August 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the bodyside welding has been completed, but some other tasks remain – such as repairing the corroded areas within the battery boxes, behind the central valances on both sides of the locomotive. Pictured at Williton on Sunday 21st August 2022 by Paul Tucker © CC BY-NC 3.0

    Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – as previously reported.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently based at Bishops Lydeard and is in regular use as per our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page. In between their work on sister loco D6566, volunteer Class 33 loco manager Ian R and new Board Member Tom had to find time to attend at Bishops Lydeard on the morning of Sunday 21st August 2022 to perform an ‘A’ exam in recognition of the completion of yet another 50 hours of running. MANY THANKS to Ian R and Tom for their work in keeping this loco running and available for use by the WSR.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – other priorities meant that there were no available volunteers to work on this loco last weekend. The engine needs to have the timing adjustments made and checked before the reinstatement of the air intake ducting and the intercoolers. When everything has been confirmed as being OK, the engine will then be test run, hopefully during the next two weeks.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco continues to be in regular use on the Kent & East Sussex Railway and underwent a 600 hour examination last week, marking a period of intensive use while that railway endures ongoing restrictions on the operation of its steam locomotives. To share the workload, the K&ESR have hired Class 33 ‘Slim Jim Crompton’ 33202 (D6587) ‘DENNIS G. ROBINSON’ to provide timetable resilience and allow our loco to have a rest now and then !

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is now in regular service on the NYMR – except that last week, she lost some time due to an electrical fault in her power controller that was caused by a dirty set of contacts. This issue was quickly remedied by the local team and the loco resumed her duties.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – as mentioned last week, well-known DEPG and WSR volunteer Jon Tooke is going to be completing the livery work on this locomotive, and is planning to do the work from mid-September onwards.

BOOK REVIEW – a flurry of automated messages from our online store system prompted us to review our offering of PRE-OWNED BOOKS and we were pleasantly surprised to find that all but four of the previously available titles had been sold, and all for the benefit of the D1010 RESTORATION FUND ! This has left our store offering a little bare, but we have received several very generous donations of pre-owned books and magazines recently, including several sought-after titles. We are going to allocate some time to get them loaded onto our online store system, so WATCH THIS SPACE for details.

We have added several NEW BOOKS to our online store recently including GREEN DIESEL DAYS, so please visit our online store and browse then buy to support the work that is taking place on our locomotives. Thanks !

ON SHED – this week, we feature the oldest working diesel locomotive in the UK, courtesy of long-term DEPG member and regular contributor Neale Long who made a visit to the TANFIELD RAILWAY near Gateshead. The first rails were laid on the surviving section in 1725, making it the oldest operational railway in the UK. It’s origins date back to 1621 when it first opened as a horse-drawn wagonway that carried coal from the mines of County Durham to the banks of the River Tyne. A 3-mile section of this line still operates as a Heritage Railway and rides are offered using industrial steam and diesel locomotives. It is quite fitting that the oldest operational diesel-electric locomotive in the UK (see below) is based there and is still in frequent use. Many thanks to Neale for making us aware of these pieces of history.

  • Weekly Roundup – 14-Aug-22

The WEST SOMERSET STEAM EXPRESS railtour from London Paddington to Minehead and return was operated by two West Coast Railways Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ throughout on Saturday 13th August 2022 because of the high fire risk of using the booked steam locomotives. The return leg was captured on film as it rolled through Williton with 33029 (D6547) leading 33025 (D6543, formerly ‘SULTAN’). Photo by Graham Perry © CC BY-NC 3.0

The WSR resonated to the sound of FOUR ‘CROMPTONS’ and ONE ‘HYMEK’ on Saturday 13th August when the combination of a high fire risk warning from the Met Office caused the booked steam traction of the WEST SOMERSET STEAM EXPRESS railtour to be substituted with two Class 33s from West Coast Railways, adding to the two ‘Cromptons’ from the DEPG that were already running as a result of the temporary steam ban on the WSR. This unprecedented situation was enough to get the ‘Crompton’ fans heading toward the WSR, but a concern about a water leak in the cooling system of D6566 (33 048) led to additional complications due to the loco being substituted for part of her diagram by Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 while the errant ‘Crompton’ received attention at Williton.

The railtour had planned to use LMS ‘Jubilee’ 6P Class 4-6-0 5596 ‘BAHAMAS‘ as traction between London Paddington and Bishops Lydeard, where WSR steam traction would have taken over and hauled the railtour forward to Minehead. Given the steam ban on the WSR due to the lineside fires of the previous weekend, all available DEPG locomotives were either in use or not suitable for the 10-coach rake of Mark 1 coaches, so the tour operator substituted a pair of Class 33s to meet both the axle loading requirements of the WSR and provide the required tractive effort.

The return leg of the WEST SOMERSET STEAM EXPRESS railtour from Minehead to London Paddington was pictured arriving at Bishops Lydeard where it paused before heading to Norton Fitwarren to rejoin the main line on Saturday 13th August 2022. Traction was 33029 (D6547) leading 33025 (D6543, formerly ‘SULTAN’). Photo by Josh Brinsford © CC BY-NC 3.0

The original concept for the railtour was steam haulage from Paddington to Bishops Lydeard where the mainline loco would come off and be replaced by WSR steam locos. When the fire risk first became elevated, the railtour was modified to include a Class 47 diesel to support the steam loco and reduce the liklihood of cinders being emitted from the steam loco. The railtour was modified again when the WSR introduced a temporary steam ban. The DEPG fleet was already booked to take over the WSR steam rosters, so the railtour operator planned to send a pair of ‘Cromptons’ from their Southall depot to Bishops Lydeard on the day before the railtour, so that the WSR leg could be hauled by locos that were compliant with the axle loading restriction that is currently in force on the WSR. This plan was modified again when the Met Office issued their higher-level warning for fire risk and the decision was taken to work the railtour with the Class 33s throughout.

This was no doubt disappointing for steam lovers and also for those who had planned to attend or participate in the planned renaming ceremony for ‘BAHAMAS‘ that was to take place at Bishops Lydeard, in commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the South Atlantic Conflict. The loco was to be temporarily re-named ‘FALKLAND ISLANDS‘ which was the name carried by long-lost sister loco 45606, but the ceremony will now be postponed until another suitable opportunity presents itself.

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) was removed from the 12:30 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead service at Williton on Saturday 13th August and substituted by ‘Hymek’ D7018 so that the ’33’ could receive attention to a leaking hose in her cooling system. The repair only took an hour or so and the loco then repositioned to Bishops Lydeard to pick up her 16:30 duty from there, to avoid disrupting timetabled services. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Our very own Falkland Islands veteran and DEPG Chairman Martin Howard was called into action on Saturday when Class 33 D6566 (33 048) was found to be at risk of overheating due to a low coolant level that was in turn caused by a leaking hose. The loco had already worked the 10:00 service from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard and worked the 12:30 return service as far as Williton where ‘Hymek’ D7018 had been prepared as the ‘Thunderbird’ loco and was ready to take over the train while the ‘Crompton’ received attention. Many thanks to Martin and Tom for stepping in to keep the timetable in good shape. After repair, the ‘Crompton’ ran light engine to Bishops Lydeard to take charge of the 16:30 service to Minehead and the ‘Hymek’ remained attached to the back of the train to hitch a ride home.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was at the tail end of the 16:30 departure from Bishops Lydeard on Saturday 13th August 2022, seen here at Crowcombe Heathfield where the service crossed with the return leg of the WEST SOMERSET STEAM EXPRESS railtour from Minehead to London Paddington, which was being hauled by West Coast Railways ‘Crompton’ pair 33029 (D6547) leading 33025 (D6543, formerly ‘SULTAN’). Now an IMPORTANT STATEMENT FROM DEPG CHAIRMAN MARTIN HOWARD:

I want to offer a huge thank you to our volunteers. They have, in many diverse ways, stepped up to answer the challenge of helping to maintain public train services on the WSR. This has initially been in response to the Railway seeking to control costs as a result of the recent massive increases in the cost of coal, but latterly in response to the extremely high fire risk and subsequent total dieselisation of services. Many of the changes have of necessity been made at very short notice which has made planning and publicity particularly challenging. Considering we weren’t expecting to be running any diesel services at all in August, we have done incredibly well and we are only half way through the month! It has not gone un-noticed by either the DEPG or the WSR Boards. Well done to everyone involved, and thank you for your efforts.

We have kept our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page updated throughout all of these changes, and we can see that the diesel-hauled services are being used, so MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE TRAVELLED for supporting this year’s DIESEL RUNNING program on the WSR.

The usual caveats of loco availability apply, but we aim to deliver the published program of running with the locos indicated and we will provide as much advance notice of any change as possible, using our DIESELGEN and Twitter feeds, so please sign up to keep up to date.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – more progress on this loco this week, as can be seen from the photos below.

D1010 – the upper buffer beam valance panel has been removed and it is obvious that it had lost all of its support, so a new structure was created so that the repair would be properly supported. Let’s call this Step 1. Pictured at Williton on 8th August 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – Step 2 – the old corroded buffer beam valance panel has been re-fitted along with a new patch to fill an area that could not be saved. Using the old panel helps ensure that the previous shape and form of the locomotive is retained. Pictured at Williton on 8th August 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – Step 3 – the corroded bottom edge of the buffer beam valance panel has been cut away and replaced with new steel that is seam welded at the top and plug welded to the support structure at the bottom. Pictured at Williton on 9th August 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – Step 4 – the left hand side of the buffer beam valance panel has been dealt with similarly, with a seam weld in the centre to maintain the original profile. Pictured at Williton on 9th August 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the welds around the newly-repaired areas need dressing, but the rest of ‘A’ end has received a coat of primer. Quite a difference ! Pictured at Williton on 13th August 2022 by Mike Evans © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – this massive loco needs a lot of time and effort put into the preparation of her bodysides, to be closely followed by the application of multiple coats of paint, with rubbing down between coats. D1010 – meanwhile, Gordon continued his work on the restoration of the headcode boxes so that they can be re-assembled and re-fitted to the locomotive. Pictured at Williton on 13th August 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco had a very eventful week and caused a lot of trouble ! It all started on Monday morning, 8th August when the loco was moved from Williton to Minehead to substitute for a steam loco on the first day of the WSR’s temporary ban on steam (as a result of the two lineside fires of the previous weekend). The departure from Minehead was uneventful but upon arrival at Bishops Lydeard, the engine room was found to be awash with oil and the engine had to be shut down.

With no steam locos available and no drivers available for the ‘Hymek’, the WSR called upon their Class 115 DMU to take over the return leg of the journey and to operate the remaining 60 miles of the diagram. Luckily, the driver on duty that day was rated on both the Class 33 and the DMU, so was able to keep the Blue timetable running with the minimum of delay.

D6566 was coupled inside D6575 on the latter’s return journey from Bishops Lydeard at 16:30 and was delivered to Williton so that the oil leak could be investigated.

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) was returned to the yard at Williton in disgrace by sister loco D6575 (33 057) on Monday 8th August 2022 after being failed by her driver due to an oil leak in her engine room, later traced to the Serck tank pipework (the hydraulic power circuit for the radiator fan). Photo by Geoff Miles © CC BY-NC 3.0

On Tuesday 9th, the fault was isolated and replacement pipes were ordered for fitment on the Wednesday. Meanwhile, the DMU was soldiering on but was down to two working engines out of four by the end of Wednesday and could not be relied upon for further service. Luckily, D6566 was repaired on the Wednesday and repositioned to Minehead to be ready to take up her duties again on the 10:00 service from Thursday morning.

As previously reported, D6566 returned to Williton again on Saturday for attention to a hose in the cooling system that had developed a leak, thought to be as a result of mild overheating when her cooling fan circuit was not operating as it should have been. One issue leads to another. The hose was changed and the loco put back in service !

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently based at Bishops Lydeard and is in regular use as per our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page – and is performing very well indeed, which is how a ‘Crompton’ is supposed to perform !

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) pauses at Williton while working the 16:35 Minehead to Bishops Lydeard and finds ‘Hymek’ D7018 at the tail end of the Minehead-bound service, returning home after performing ‘Thunderbird’ duties while D6566 (33 048) received attention at Williton earlier in the day. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – a flurry of activity on this loco, with the available efforts boosted by the Class 14 team who combined forces with Leroy to get the cam box and fuel injectors refitted and ready for timing adjustments. The next steps after timing will be the reinstatement of the air intake ducting and the intercoolers, and then the engine can be test run. Many thanks to all involved for their efforts on this loco.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – as reported earlier, this loco was called into action on Saturday 13th August (much to the surpise of the photographers who were expecting ‘Cromptons’!) and performed perfectly.

The next scheduled dates for ‘Hymek’ running are the 10:00 and 14:30 Minehead to Bishops Lydeard return services on Sat/Sun 3rd/4th September. Between now and then, our Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ will be in regular use (we hope!), so keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page for updates or join the DIESELGEN email bulletin group (which also includes information about non-public services, where the information is available to us sufficiently in advance).

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the Class 14 team lent a hand on D7017 this last weekend so photos of work on D9518 are few, except that Andy P turned his attention to the framework that forms the side of the bonnet with a view to getting it ready for priming and painting. As explained during the last few weeks, progress will need to be focused on component parts for a while, to get ready for the next ‘big step’.

D9518 – the frame that forms one side of the ‘long’ bonnet of the ‘Teddy Bear’ was subjected to the restorative skills of Andy P at Williton on Saturday 13th August 2022. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco continues to be in regular use on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. The scheduled 500 hour inspection that was performed last weekend revealed what looked like a loose rivet that had to be further investigated, so the loco was out of service for a few days while the local team resolved the issue (which involved lifting the loco). Luckily, the issue was not serious and the loco resumed service during the week. Well done and thank you very much to Team Grimwood at the K&ESR for their hard work in very hot conditions !

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is now in regular service on the NYMR – except that last weekend, she had to have a new set of brake blocks fitted and this resulted in several days out of service while this was done and while some other issues with the braking system were being attended to. This meant that for the first few days of last week, the only one of our locos that was actually in revenue-earning service was Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) so she definitely wins the reliability prize this month !

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – last week we mentioned that we needed some help to complete the livery details on this locomotive, and DEPG and WSR volunteer Jon Tooke stepped forward and grabbed the opportunity, so WELL DONE JON ! We look forward to this work being carried out from mid-September onwards.

If you can help by donating your time, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

BOOK REVIEW – being short of time again this week, we will just include this reminder that we have added several new books to our online store recently, so please visit our online store and browse then buy to support the work that is taking place on our locomotives. Here below are some examples. Thanks !

ON SHED – apologies, but we will have to skip this feature again this week.

  • Weekly Roundup – 07-Aug-22

NOTE : Apologies for the lateness of the roundup posting this week.

The WSR’s ex-BR 1960 Swindon-built Class 03 shunter D2133 was in action offering brake van rides at Norton Fitzwarren over the weekend of 6/7 August 2022. The loco is running on the truncated remains of the Taunton to Barnstaple line, so the headboard of the famous Paddington to Penzance express seems to have inadvertently become placed on the wrong loco. The major event of last weekend was the WSRA’s STEAM AND VINTAGE RALLY that occupied a massive area at Norton Fitwarren and turned out to be a wonderful occasion that was very well supported by the public with in excess of 8,000 people attending over the two days. The weather was perfect (on the hot side of perfect for me) and the events and exhibits were plentiful. All of this was supported by some excellent refreshment vendors and a very large dose of happy atmosphere and friendliness all around. WELL DONE TEAM WSRA ! OUTSTANDING !!

Back to DEPG activities and our ‘celebrity’ Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840)NORTH STAR‘ had to take a break last weekend due to needing a new set of brake blocks. However, she was snapped while out and about on the Wednesday by our area correspondent Martin Fisher, who provided us with more great views of the loco and the NYMR, one of which appears below. Many thanks to Martin for sharing his work with us.

Also making the news last week was Class 14 D9526 because of a steam ban in the dry and parched area of the Kent & East Sussex Railway which meant that the ‘Teddy Bear’ and their resident DMU were the only forms of usable motive power on the railway. So, after having fractured her exhaust bellows the week before and returning to operation after that repair, D9526 was undergoing a scheduled inspection when what looked like a loose spring support bracket was discovered and the loco was stopped again! When things go wrong, they tend to go wrong on multiple locos at the same time, so I’ll say no more about this until the next roundup. Watch this space !

And now for a light-hearted take on the various steam bans that are in force across much of the UK … a very imaginative piece of artwork, courtesy of the KESR  !

The modified YELLOW timetable went into force on the WSR last Tuesday 2nd August and Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) worked the 11:00 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and the 15:25 return service on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as planned. The weekend was all steam except for the DMU running to Norton Fitzwarren on the Rally shuttle, but the continuing dry spell had left the embankments tinder dry and two significant fires broke out, one near Williton on Saturday 6th and another near Blue Anchor on Sunday 7th, so the WSR decided to impose a steam ban and revert to the BLUE timetable with the two Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ providing the haulage as from Monday 8th.

As mentioned before, things tend to happen in clusters and we again ran into trouble with Class 33 D6566 (33 048) on the Monday and the DMU had to be pressed into service to save the day. More about this in the next roundup, but suffice to say that all locos have returned to serviceable status now.

We kept our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page updated throughout the affected days and we have a DIESELGEN bulletin lined up for later today to spread the news about the planned running this coming weekend (FOUR ‘Cromptons’ on the WSR). MANY THANKS for supporting this year’s DIESEL RUNNING program on the WSR.

The usual caveats of loco availability apply, but we will be aiming to deliver the above program of running with the locos indicated and we will provide as much advance notice of any change as possible, using our DIESELGEN and Twitter feeds, so please sign up to keep up to date.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – we will need to keep it brief this week but there was plenty of progress on this loco, as can be seen from the photos below. Please consider SPONSORING A PATCH because there is plenty of fresh metal that needs engraving !

D1010 – the corroded upper buffer beam valance strip at ‘A’ end was removed to assess the underlying structure and this is what we found ! Evidence of previous collision damage, probably dating back to 1972 which was when the loco was last repaired at Swindon Works. Don’t worry, it will all be sorted out by the next roundup. D1010 – Step 1 is to put shape and strength back into the structure that sits behind the valance strip, as this photo of the left side of ‘A’ end shows. Step 2 will be presented in the next roundup. Pictured at Williton on 2nd August 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – one of the headcode frames has been fitted with new rubber seals around the glass – a task that was every bit as difficult as it looks. Well done Gordon for persevering ! Pictured at Williton on 6th August 2022 by Tom Courtney © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the re-sealed headcode frame was trial fitted to the aperture at ‘A’ end to ensure that everything was properly aligned. Pictured at Williton on 6th August 2022 by Tom Courtney © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco was stabled at Williton throughout the weekend and moved to Minehead on Monday morning to take up her unexpected additional duties. The rest, as they say, is history!

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently based at Bishops Lydeard and is in regular use as per our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – no change last week due to non-availaibilty of the people with the appropriate knowledge and the continuing need to perform some maintenance tasks on sister loco D7018. Progress is expected to resume THIS Saturday with a view to getting the loco out on test later this month.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – some light maintenance tasks were performed on this loco last weekend.

The next scheduled dates for ‘Hymek’ running are the 10:00 and 14:30 Minehead to Bishops Lydeard return services on Sat/Sun 3rd/4th September. Between now and then, our Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ will be in regular use, so keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page for updates or join the DIESELGEN email bulletin group (which also includes information about non-public services, where the information is available to us sufficiently in advance).

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – efforts are currently focussed on the restoration of the braking mechanism, with the various components such as bushes and pins needing replacing to return the system to the working tolerances that are needed for safe and reliable operation. The photo below shows the trial fitment of one of the brake blocks. In parallel, John Cooke continued his work on the restoration of the electrical control cubicle, having removed all of the control parts from the hinged front panel so that it can be repainted.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – as already covered, this loco is in regular use on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. The week before last, a fractured exhaust bellows caused a bit of an uproar (literally) but the local team saved the day and installed a new spare part from their stock. Here’s a picture of the fractured part that was returned to Williton by Colin G, who went to the KESR last week for driver refresher training.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – covered previously – now in regular service on the NYMR.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is fully operational and is stabled in the yard at Williton. She is hiding under a tarpaulin to prevent the fresh paintwork from being damaged by seagull droppings. We need help to complete the livery details on this locomotive. Please let us know if you could help with this work. Click here for the CONTACT form. Thanks !

WSR NEWS: the next event on the WSR will be the ‘FORTIES WEEKEND‘ that takes place from Saturday 10th through Sunday 11th September when the DEPG facility at Williton will again be open to the public, complete with ROD SAUNDERS and his model railway sales stand. Please make a plan to come along to this event in support of both the WSR and the DEPG. Timetables for planned diesel running are now being published via our new DIESEL RUNNING DATES page and any updates will be shared via our DIESELGEN email bulletin service.

The timetables and the dates for the 2022 special events are as follows, so please make a note and ADD THESE DATES TO YOUR DEPG CALENDARS:

  • Weekly Roundup – 31-Jul-22

BR 1965 Crewe-built Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ continues as our headliner this week after putting in regular appearances on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and earning the admiration of crews, depot staff and passengers. Our ‘celebrity‘ loco was pictured on the approach to Goathland Station on Monday 1st August 2022 by Martin Fisher © CC BY-NC 3.0

Continuing to hold the spotlight is our Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ who has been busy working public services between Grosmont and Pickering on the NYMR on a daily basis since 19th July and building on her reputation as a fine performer and a pleasure to drive. Again we have the benefit of photographs from our local correspondent Martin Fisher and we send him our thanks for keeping us up to date with the North Yorkshire news.

Thanks again go to Martin Fisher for hiking across the moors and sharing his photographs with us all !

Returning to the forthcoming event on our home line, the WSRA’s STEAM AND VINTAGE RALLY takes place this coming weekend and arrangements are being made by the WSR to support this event by providing shuttle services between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren and diesel shunting locomotives to power the brake van rides that will run along the stub of the former Barnstaple branch line. Click here or on the below image for more details:

The weather forecast is excellent and the exhibitors sections are all fully booked up, so there will be plenty to see and plenty to buy, including items from our DEPG Sales Stand that will be manned by Chris and Mark, and plenty of refreshment choices. Due to the very poor mobile network coverage in this rural location, card readers may not work well, so please bring cash, just in case. We wish the WSRA the very best of luck with this event which has been sorely missed during the last two years. Let’s hope for a bumper attendance this year !

The WSR’s Class 03 shunter D2133 has repositioned from Minehead (MD) to Bishops Lydeard (BL) in advance of heading to Norton Fitzwarren to work the Brake Van rides that will run along the remains of the former Barnstaple branch line during the STEAM AND VINTAGE RALLY. Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) is also visible and is the booked loco for the 11:00 BL-MD-BL services under the YELLOW timetable. Photo by Rich Hiscox © CC BY-NC 3.0

The WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) was pictured arriving at Bishops Lydeard on Sunday 31st July 2022 and is booked to work the free shuttle service that will run between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren throughout the STEAM AND VINTAGE RALLY that takes place on Sat/Sun 06/07 August 2022. It is great to see the DMU back in service ! Photo by Dave Fowler © CC BY-NC 3.0

Starting THIS WEEK, the modified YELLOW timetable applies and Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) is working the 11:00 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and the 15:25 return service on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The ‘Crompton’ will also cover the same service on Saturdays 13th, 20th and 27th August. Details can be found our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page. Any additional or updated information will be announced via DIESELGEN as soon as possible.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER continues to gather pace to keep up with the excellent progress on the restoration of the locomotive itself. The last week alone has seen some major donations being received from members and volunteers, in additional to those from the much larger band of Class 52 supporters. We will be updating the fund contributions totals and adding the Gift Aid during the coming days. WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP, so click on the images to make a donation. We know that times are hard, but please do what you can to help.

The ‘CAMPAIGNER’ team continue their work on restoring this massive and complex locomotive. Although bodywork repairs have progressed well, we still have a lot of rubbing down and painting to do, so PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND HELP IF YOU CAN !

D1010 – a view along the ‘A’ side at Williton on Saturday 30th July 2022 shows that repair work has been completed on this side (apart from one small area in the battery box frame) and only the cosmetic work remains – but that is a lot of work to do on a loco that is over 20m in length (68 feet) so please come along and help. D1010 – the buffer beam valance at the secondman’s corner of ‘A’ end was cut open and repair work commenced at Williton on Tuesday 26th July 2022. The repair will involve welding-in new metal to replace what has been dissolved by water ingress over the years. Photo by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the upper part of ‘A’ end has been completely rubbed down to bare metal and is ready to receive a primer coat. The lower part that still carries yellow paint and green primer is unsupported due to corrosion of the underlying structure, so it has to be removed so that the structure can be repaired. That’s a task for the coming weeks. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 30th July 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is at Williton and has been returned to service subject to close monitoring of the engine oil condition. We expect to swap her with sister D6575 (33 057) when that loco’s next ‘A’ exam becomes due, probably towards the end of August.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently at Bishops Lydeard and is rostered for regular use during August as per our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – an unavoidable interruption in the rate of progress this week due to non-availaibilty of the people with the appropriate knowledge and the need to perform some maintenance tasks on sister loco D7018. Progress is expected to resume this coming Saturday with a view to getting the loco out on test later this month.

Then, the cam box covers can be replaced and the air intake ducting re-assembled. Photo by Mike Evans © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco moved from Minehead to Williton ‘light engine’ on Saturday 30th July and has taken up position outside the Old Goods Shed on Number 1 road. Some maintenance tasks needed to be done, including replacing a failed windscreen wiper control, so these tasks were given priority to keep the loco available for service if called upon.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – progress continues on preparing and restoring small components, all of which are necessary for the re-assembly of the braking system, so there was little outwardly visible progress to photograph this week. An important step forward was the ordering of two replacement ‘Layrub’ couplings for the generator drive shaft. These couplings are similar to those shown in the adverts pictured below that date from 1947 and 1952, so it could be said that Swindon’s 1964 design of the Class 14s was based on mature technology !

The two replacement couplings have been ordered from Twiflex and will be genuine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts for this critical application. Any failure in service could cause serious internal damage to the transmission and the generator, so we need to mitigate this risk by being very careful. Being now classed as ‘heritage components’, these are of course EXPENSIVE and we searched long and hard before biting the bullet and paying the money. We did receive a discount for being a charity, for which we are appreciative. MANY THANKS to the D9518 fund contributors for making this purchase possible.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is still in regular use and performing well on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. Last week, a fractured exhaust bellows caused some consternation because the loco was booked to work, but a spare part was arranged from local stock held for sister loco D9504 and the local Class 14 team performed the repair and put the loco back in service, so many thanks to Mike Grimwood and team for saving the day!

If you can help by donating your time, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

BOOK REVIEW – being short of time this week, we will just include this reminder that we have added a new book to our online store from Amberley Publishing and featuring GREEN DIESELS from the late 1950s through to the 1970s. This softcover book is an interesting read and is well worth the price of £14.99 so please support our online store and click here to buy your copy. Thanks !

PLEASE NOTE that we can supply any book from PLATFORM 5 or PEN & SWORD or AMBERLEY via our online store. If the title that you want is not listed on our webstore, just email us or use our CONTACT FORM to tell us what you want and we will arrange it, the profit margin on the sale going to the LOCO FUND OF YOUR CHOICE.

Don’t miss these two excellent new titles, the profits from which will go to the D9518 Restoration fund:

ON SHED – not exactly ‘on shed’ but there was a shed nearby …. just not in this picture ! The two Ruston & Hornsby industrial diesel locos are pictured with ex-BR Class 03 03079 (D2179) at the Derwent Valley Light Railway at Murton Park in York, during an enthusiasts evening event that took place on Friday 29th July 2022 and was evidently very well patronised. The ’03’ was built at Doncaster in 1960, the same year as Ruston 0-4-0DM ‘ROWNTREE & CO Ltd No. 3’ in the foreground. The loco visible behind No. 3 is another Ruston 0-4-0DM number 327964, this time dating back to 1953 and formerly in use with British Sugar. It was reported that everyone was having a good time ! Many thanks to regular correspondent Neale Long for sharing his photo with us all.

DEPG NEWS – the DEPG is delighted to confirm the appointment of TOM COURTNEY to the Board of Directors with effect from 24th July 2022 in a new role that will allow existing Board members to transfer some of their tasks to Tom, particularly those tasks that relate to operations, such as monthly billing and recording of loco movements. This is an important task that is becoming more complex as we now have locos running on three railways, all of which insist on being billed in a timely manner.

Local resident Tom has been volunteering at Williton for many years and is a fully qualified secondman. He is also a member of the Class 33 maintenance team and has developed a familiarity with this very important class of locomotive. We can now start to load him up with additional responsibilities, all of which will help him further develop his knowledge and skills. WELL DONE TOM for stepping up to the plate and taking on more work for the benefit of the DEPG !

Tom will be standing for formal election at the forthcoming AGM which takes place at Williton on Saturday 3rd September 2022.

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) was supporting the ‘WINTERLIGHTS‘ services and qualified DEPG secondman – and now DEPG Director and Trustee – Tom Courtney was also on duty on the cold and wintry evening of Friday 26th November 2021, pictured while the loco waited between turns at Bishops Lydeard by DEPG Chairman and loco driver Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 3.0

A synopsis of the last Board Meeting will be sent out later this week to all members for whom we hold a valid email address. A hard copy of the last three synopses will be sent out with the next edition of the quarterly DEPG NEWSLETTER, which is scheduled for mailing in mid August.

Our new online membership system is working well and feedback has been very positive. Membership is INCREASING STEADILY ! If you haven’t done so already, please take a look at your membership record and make sure that it is correct. You will also be able to select ‘paper’, ‘paperless’ or ‘paperless except newsletter’ communication, according to your preference. In the event of any discrepancies that you can’t resolve directly via Membermojo, please email Membership Secretary Chris Shields using members@depg.org so that he can make the correction for you. Thanks for helping us reduce the administrative effort required for managing memberships (for the benefit of our loco fleet).

Don’t forget that the WSRA will be hosting the long-awaited return of the STEAM & VINTAGE RALLY at Norton Fitzwarren this coming weekend, so please try to attend what promises to be a very enjoyable event !

The timetables and the dates for the 2022 special events are as follows, so please make a note and ADD THESE DATES TO YOUR DEPG CALENDARS:

  • Weekly Roundup – 24-Jul-22

BR 1965 Crewe-built Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ is now in regular service on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and doing a great job, including working ‘THE MOORLANDER’ Pullman service, pictured at Pickering on Wednesday 21st July 2022. Photo by Martin Fisher © CC BY-NC 3.0

Continuing to make the news is our Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ who has been out and about, running between Grosmont and Pickering on the NYMR on a daily basis, due to the very high fire risk in that area and the need to support steam loco operations. The very rugged nature of the NYMR route can be seen from the below picture of the loco and train near Moorgates, and the picture further below shows Newtondale Halt, which is a very remote place that cannot be reached by car. This halt was built by the NYMR for the benefit of walkers. The point from which the photo was taken is over a mile away from the nearest road, so it is rarely photographed !

Many thanks to Martin Fisher for hiking across the moors to get these photographs !

Returning to events on our home line, Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 worked the 10:00 Minehead diagram (80 miles) on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th July, the Sunday service being especially busy as a result of the WSR’s VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT drive that resulted in more than 70 people engaging with presenters from each of the main volunteering areas of the WSR (DEPG included), first receiving a presentation as a group and then splitting up into individual discussions with representatives from the volunteering areas.

The objective was to attract potential volunteers and showcase the very wide range of opportunities that exist on a railway that is the size of the WSR, and the objective was well and truly achieved. We hope to see several new faces joining the teams during the coming weeks !

Starting NEXT WEEK, the YELLOW timetable applies and Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) will be working the 11:00 Bishops Lydeard to Minhead and the 15:25 return on most weekdays. Details can be found our new DIESEL RUNNING DATES page. Any additional or updated information will be announced via DIESELGEN as soon as possible.

Another nice surprise this last weekend was the test run of the WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) between Minehead and Williton on Sunday afternoon, 24th July 2022. The 1960-vintage machine was pictured at Williton where it reversed direction and returned to Minehead with a fairly short task list of issues to be resolved before it can resume regular duties on the WSR. The DMU is booked as haulage on the Norton Fitzwarren shuttle services in connection with the WSRA’s STEAM & VINTAGE RALLY that takes place on 6th and 7th August 2022. WELL DONE TO ALL WHO HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE DMU !

The WSR’s Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) was out on a test run on Sunday afternoon, 24th July 2022 and according to driver Paul Fleet, she performed well, considering the length of time that she has been out of service. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER has reached its FIRST ANNIVERSARY and continues to progress well, with both the funds and the progress on restoration moving along at a decent pace. We are in the process of updating the fund contributions and adding the Gift Aid so that we can announce the total for the first year, and we will then refresh the campaign page on JustGiving and open up a few new fundraising sources as well.

D1010 – the ‘B’ (secondman’s) side of ‘A’ end gets attention from Geoff at Williton on Monday 18th July 2022, this time cleaning out the dirt and debris that has accumulated on the deck plate over the years. Photo by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the ‘B’ (secondman’s) side of ‘A’ end has been re-skinned after re-construction of the underlying framework. The plug welding technique has to be used to form a sufficiently deep and solid connection between the skin and the framework. D1010 – the newly installed skin patches have been marked up and allocated to 33 sponsors (a mixture of £25 patches and £50 patches), thereby raising another £1,000 towards the cost of restoring this locomotive. More sponsor names will be added this coming Saturday. Pictured at Williton on Sunday 24th July 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

For those who prefer to remain anonymous, a unique reference number will be allocated and engraved instead.

See our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER web page for more details !

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is at Williton and has undergone the planned 50-hour ‘A’ exam and has been subjected to an evaluation of her engine oil heat exchanger. Recent oil sample tests have reported the presence of water and traces of copper in the oil, which points at the heat exchanger because this is basically a set of copper tubes with hot engine oil flowing through the tubes and cool water flowing around the tubes. Although a leak is suspected, the amount of leakage is minor and the loco has been cleared for a return to service, subject to regular monitoring. A replacement heat exchanger is being sourced and will be fitted as soon as it is available.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently at Bishops Lydeard and is available for service.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – Major progress was made with the help of Maybach specialist Bob Clegg, supported by Leroy and Simon B, resulting in the errant cylinder head being removed and replaced along with a new sealing ring, and the engine is now being reassembled again. Inspection of the piston and bore revealed no other causes for concern, so the issue has been confined to the cylinder head and sealing ring. Both were replaced as a precautionary measure, using spares from our stock. Leroy and Simon B then continued with the re-assembly stages, with the cam box lowered into position and ready for alignment and bolting down this coming Saturday. The photos below show the progress, so VERY WELL DONE GUYS !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is currently stabled at Minehead and is due to return to Williton as a ‘light engine’ move on Saturday 30th July, scheduled to depart from Minehead at 11:35 and planned to arrive at Williton at 12:20 so our yard will be starting to fill up again !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – progress continues with work being done on key components before they can be refitted to the frames. Last week saw further progress on braking system components such as the slack adjusters pictured below, and also on various other small parts that all need to be cleaned, inspected and restored before the next major stage of reassembly can take place.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is still in regular use and performing well on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. Here’s a photo showing our loco at the head of a 4-coach train from Bodiam, this time comprising BR Mark 1 coaching stock rather than the much older wooden-bodied coaches visible on the other side of the water tower:

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – covered previously – now in regular service on the NYMR.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco is fully operational and is stabled in the yard at Williton. She is hiding under a tarpaulin to prevent the fresh paintwork from being damaged by seagull droppings.

BOOK REVIEW – this week, we have added a new book to our online store, this time from Amberley Publishing and featuring GREEN DIESELS from the late 1950s through to the 1970s.

ON SHED – this week, we feature a photograph that was taken at Old Oak Common diesel depot (3 miles from Paddington) by long-time DEPG member Neville Sloper some time in 1975, showing our very own D7017 along with sister loco D7029, also preserved and undergoing restoration in the hands of the Diesel Traction Group (DTG) on the Severn Valley Railway. A Class 50 and a Class 47 also get a look in, but their numbers were not recorded at the time. The date can only have been between 13th March 1975 which was when the last four ‘Hymeks’ were withdrawn from service, and July 1975 because that is when D7017 was towed to Taunton in the ownership of the D+EG (forerunner of the DEPG). Looking at the work that was being undertaken on the loco, it was probably in June or July (we will try to find out). Many thanks to Neville for sharing his photo with us.

DEPG NEWS – a Board Meeting was held at Williton and via Zoom last Friday evening and a wide range of issues were discussed and decisions taken. A synopsis will be produced ASAP and will be sent to all members for whom we hold a valid email address. A hard copy of the last three synopses will be sent out with the next edition of the quarterly DEPG NEWSLETTER, which is scheduled for mailing in early August.

Our new online membership system is working well and feedback has been very positive. If you haven’t done so already, please take a look at your membership record and make sure that it is correct. You will also be able to select ‘paper’, ‘paperless’ or ‘paperless except newsletter’ communication, according to your preference. In the event of any discrepancies, please email Chris Shields using members@depg.org

The DEPG is well known as a major supporter of the West Somerset Railway, and what better way to show our support than to have our Chairman (and duty ‘Hymek’ driver), Martin Howard and our Maybach engine specialist Bob Clegg ‘do their bit’ to keep the trains running on time – as you will see from the photo below:

WSR NEWS: the next event on the WSR will be the ‘FORTIES WEEKEND‘ that takes place from Saturday 10th through Sunday 11th September when the DEPG facility at Williton will again be open to the public, complete with ROD SAUNDERS and his model railway sales stand. Please make a plan to come along to this event in support of both the WSR and the DEPG. Timetables for planned diesel running are now being published via our new DIESEL RUNNING DATES page and any updates will be shared via our DIESELGEN email bulletin service.

Between now and then, the WSRA will be hosting the long-awaited return of the STEAM & VINTAGE RALLY at Norton Fitzwarren, so keep these dates free and make a plan to attend what promises to be a very enjoyable event !

The timetables and the dates for the 2022 special events are as follows, so please make a note and ADD THESE DATES TO YOUR DEPG CALENDARS:

  • Weekly Roundup – 17-Jul-22

BR 1965 Crewe-built Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ hauled her first revenue-earning turn on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on Monday 18th July 2022, pictured at Goathland by Martin Fisher © CC BY-NC 3.0

Although not strictly within the period of review of this roundup, the ‘hot news‘ on this hottest day of the year (so far) was made by our Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR‘ who found herself pressed into service on the NYMR due to the very high fire risk and the need to support steam loco operations.

The loco looked and sounded superb as she went ‘out and about’ on the NYMR, and DEPG member and our local correspondent MARTIN FISHER braved the high temperatures to take some excellent shots, one of which is featured above.

The NYMR plan to use the ’47’ on a regular basis from now onwards, with crew training turns mixed in with scheduled haulage operations, so ‘NORTH STAR’ is going to be busy (at last !). MANY THANKS to all involved in making this loco serviceable again.

For the rest of this roundup, we will keep it quick and straightforward, because time is short and temperatures are too high to allow hours of work on the keyboard. Hopefully you will find enough of interest in this abridged edition. Thank you for supporting the DEPG !

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) took over the scheduled ‘BLUE TIMETABLE‘ turns last weekend, and was pictured at Minehead on the evening of Saturday 16th July 2022 at the head of her train, in preparation for the 10:00 service from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard the following morning. Photo by Mark Ireland © CC BY-NC 3.0

For our next two running dates, Sat/Sun 23/24 July, ‘Hymek’ D7018 will again be hauling the two return services that originate at Minehead, so make the most of this opportunity to enjoy the ‘Maybach Music’ and come along to the WSR and take a ride.

The BLUE timetable applies and can be found by clicking this link or by visiting our new DIESEL RUNNING DATES page. Any additional or updated information will be announced via DIESELGEN as soon as possible. MANY THANKS for supporting this year’s DIESEL RUNNING program on the WSR.

DIESEL RUNNING DATES – we now have a dedicated page on our website and we update it on a regular basis to provide a quick and easy reference to PUBLIC SERVICE diesel running for the whole of the 2022 season. We will be adding the link to all of our most-visited pages soon, but meanwhile the link can be found on our home page or by looking under the DIESELGEN menu header.

The usual caveats of loco availability apply, but we will be aiming to deliver the above program of running with the locos indicated and we will provide as much advance notice of any change as possible, using our DIESELGEN and Twitter feeds, so please sign up to keep up to date.

D1010 – the ‘B’ (secondman’s) side of ‘A” end is the worst location on the whole loco in terms of corrosion.

For those who prefer to remain anonymous, a unique reference number will be allocated and engraved instead.

See our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER web page for more details !

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is now at Williton to undergo an ‘A’ exam and to also undergo an investigation into reports of coolant leaking into her lubricating oil. This issue was flagged up by regular analysis of the engine oil, and work progresses to find the root cause.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently at Minehead and is available for service.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – Leroy and Simon B tackled the disassembly of the air intake system and the fuel systems, paving the way for the removal of the cam box during this coming week. The photos below show the considerable progress, so WELL DONE GUYS !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – progress continues with work being done on key components before they can be refitted to the frames. Last week saw further progress on braking system components and also on the starter motor, which has been sent to ICS Online in Preston for complete refurbishment. The folks at ICS are AMAZING and they are doing a great job for us.

D9518 – the corrosion that resulted from the removed components getting wet while in storage has made this repair task a lot more difficult. Undeterred, ICS Online intend to return the refurbished unit to us next week ! What an excellent service. Photo by Iain Parker © CC BY-NC 3.0

BOOK REVIEW – sorry, but again we don’t have time for a new book review this week, but we do still have stock of these three books by Anthony P. Sayer – each one is well worth acquiring.  The recent visit of Class 17 ‘Clayton’ D8568 to the WSR has prompted us to obtain stock of the excellent book that was featured in a book review by Neale Long back in August last year. The book review has been posted on our website so please click here to read it and then buy the book from our online store. We are offering this £40 epic for a discounted price of £36 which is the same price as being offered by the publisher. THANK YOU VERY MUCH to Neale Long for providing us with a detailed review of this book.

PLEASE NOTE that we can supply any book from PLATFORM 5 or PEN & SWORD or AMBERLEY via our online store. • Weekly Roundup – 10-Jul-22

BRCW Class 33 ‘Crompton D6566 (33 048) was in use for three consecutive days Tu/We/Th 5/6/7 July 2022, working a freight train between Minehead and Norton Fitzwarren and back. These special workings provided training opportunities for Guards and also provided plenty of interesting photo opportunities for spectators. Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) has been very busy during the last week, hauling the freight for three days and working the ‘Blue Timetable’ diagram for both days of the weekend. The freight trains were special workings to provide Guards with the necessary training and included a run to Norton Fitzwarren to refresh them in relation to that part of the route. The weather was perfect on all three days and a great time was had by all, including the lineside photographers who snapped up the rare sight of a diesel on freight.

The intensive use means that D6566 (33 048) will soon need to undergo an ‘A’ exam which might be difficult to arrange while she is outstationed at Minehead, so the loco may switch with sister D6575 (33 057) during the scheduled running for this coming weekend. We may not get advance notification of a loco change, so we will just have to wait and see what happens !

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP, so click on the images to make a donation. We know that times are hard, but please do what you can to help.

Colin and his assistants are now tackling the ‘B’ (secondmans) side of ‘A’ cab and, as expected, this corner of the loco carries the worst of the corrosion damage that has accumulated over the fifty years since the last major works overhaul. Last week, we featured the roof repairs and showed the crack that had allowed water to enter, and today we show you where some of that water went and the damage that it caused. Although bodywork repairs have progressed well, we still have a lot of rubbing down and painting to do on this massive locomotive, so PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND HELP IF YOU CAN !

D1010 – a suspect section of cabside skin was removed from below the ‘B’ (secondman) side window of ‘A’ end and the structure behind the skin was found to have disintegrated completely. Photo taken at Williton on Monday 4th July 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the first step was to clean out the debris, then install replacement steel tube and angle sections and plug weld them in place so that the weight of the cab structure can be shared between the skin and the frame. The second step was to weld a new piece of skin and plug weld it to the frame to provide additional strength and stiffness. D1010 – Volunteers Chris and Gordon kept the steady drumbeat of progress going on D1010 on the weekend, assisted by Ian F and Leroy (not pictured). Photo taken at Williton on Saturday 9th July by Terry Deacon © CC BY-NC 3.0

For those who prefer to remain anonymous, a unique reference number will be allocated and engraved instead.

See our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER web page for more details !

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco was in use for five days last week and is rostered for this coming weekend’s 1000 Minehead diagram under the BLUE TIMETABLE. It is likely that the loco will get switched with sister D6575 (33 057) some time during the weekend, but this depends on operational priorities.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently at Bishops Lydeard, fresh from an ‘A’ exam and available for service.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – there is significant progress to report, now that this loco is under cover in the loco shed and work is able to proceed apace without the lost time of having the loco moved back and forth under the outdoor crane in ‘seagull alley’. Here’s some photos showing the work that is in progress:

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 viewed from the ground, looking up through the bodyside doors and straight through the space where the roof used to be and already showing daylight between the air intake duct and the the filter housing, as the air intakes are prepared for hoisting out of the loco. Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – as covered earlier, this loco is stabled at Minehead and is next due to perform on the 10:00 and 14:30 Minehead to Bishops Lydeard return services on Sat/Sun 23rd/24th July. Keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page for updates or join the DIESELGEN email bulletin group (which also includes information about non-public services, where the information is available to us sufficiently in advance).

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – progress resumed with Colin G going between the frames to get at some of the areas that required cleaning and painting. Work continued on the electrical cubicle and further research took place to determine the best source for the two replaement ‘Layrub’ coulings that are needed for the generator drive shaft.

D9518 – the attention to detail continues, even in the non-visible areas such as between the frames. Colin G gets down to work at Williton on Saturday 9th July 2022. Photo by Terry Deacon © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is still in regular use and performing well on the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – the loco is being prepared for service at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the latest news is that the loco has been running up and down in the yard at Grosmont for test purposes. If all goes well, the loco could be out on a test run this week and be in service next week. The heightened fire risk caused by the recent dry weather has put the presssure on to the diesel team to get the loco ready to support the steam locos during the busy summer timetable, so we expect to see her in service very soon!

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this little loco benefitted from a thorough wash and brush-up from new volunteers Simon B and Karl on Saturday 9th July 2022, but with so few locos in our yard at Williton, the seagulls soon returned to this small piece of 1970s heritage – as can be seen below:

If you can help by donating your time, then please JOIN US and come along to the depot for an introduction to what we do and how we do it. We currently have people on site from Saturday through to Tuesday and we can open on other days if we can be sure of getting at least two volunteers on site at all times, so there is plenty of scope. We have tasks of all types to suit most capabilities, both skilled and unskilled.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who give up so much of their time to work on the cleaning, painting, maintaining, restoring, managing and fund raising for our fleet of heritage locomotives !

BOOK REVIEW – due to some urgent administrative matters, we again don’t have time for a new book review this week, but we do still have stock of these three books by Anthony P.

If the title that you want is not listed on our webstore, just email us or use our CONTACT FORM to tell us what you want and we will arrange it, the profit margin on the sale going to the LOCO FUND OF YOUR CHOICE.

ON SHED – this week, as we swelter in the heat of a ‘proper summer’, we need to remind ourselves not to wish the warm weather away too quickly. The photo below, from the collection of long-term DEPG member Phil Gray, shows a wet and dismal day in August 1990 where a bit of sunshine would have made all the difference !

Beyer-Peacock ‘Hymek’ D7017 stands in the rain at Barry Open Day in South Wales on 19th August 1990, with Class 25 D7672 (25322, 25912) ‘TAMWORTH CASTLE’ for company. ‘Hymeks’ were regular visitors to Barry throughout their short careers on BR. Also present on that dull and rainy day were representatives of sixteen other loco classes – click this link for details. Photo by Phil Gray © CC BY-NC 3.0

Many thanks to Phil for sharing his photos with us.

  • Weekly Roundup – 03-Jul-22

Beyer Peacock Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was again working the Minehead to Bishops Lydeard return service on both Saturday and Sunday 2nd/3rd July 2022. This drone image capture shows the loco and six-coach train climbing out of Bishops Lydeard, having just crossed Watersmeet Bridge (where the B3224 to Exmoor leaves the A358) on the return leg of the second round trip on the Sunday. Another enjoyable weekend with ‘Hymek’ D7018 working the Minehead to Bishops Lydeard diagram (two round trips totalling 80 miles), the weather starting wet but ending with glorious sunshine and clear skies – what else would we expect for July !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 waits for the token at the delightful and colourful Williton station as the steam-hauled service to Minehead arrives at platform 1. The ‘Hymek’ will take a break for the next two weekends and hand the baton over to the ‘Cromptons’. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

For our next two running dates, Sat/Sun 09/10 and 16/17 July, the ‘Hymek’ is taking a well-earned rest. Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) is currently in position at Minehead and is expected to haul these services, although Class 33 volunteer loco manager Ian has requested that the loco be swapped with D6575 (33 057) for the weekend of 16/17 July to even up the running hours (each loco needs an ‘A’ exam every 50 hours). If this change takes place, we will publish the change via our DIESELGEN email bulletin service.

The BLUE timetable applies and can be found by clicking this link or by visiting our new DIESEL RUNNING DATES page. Any additional or updated information will be announced by the WSR and via DIESELGEN as soon as possible.

This last weekend was the launch of the restoration project for Railbus W79978 which is based at Hayes Knoll on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway. The Railbus had been prepared for a weekend of demonstration running, but this was curtailed after the first few runs on the Saturday due to sticking valves in the compressed air system – an issue that affects most rail-based machines that do not get used regularly. The restoration project will resolve all such issues, but the disappointment of DEPG member and Railbus owner Martin Rouse must have been palpable, after the massive effort that was made to get the machine into demonstration fitness, with several succesful runs having taken place on the Friday. We empathise, having been there many times ourselves.

Railbus W79978 had to be shunted by diminutive Fowler 0-4-0DM 21442 ‘Woodbine’ after failing during its demonstration running at Hayes Knoll on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway on 2nd July 2022. Click here to read more about this vintage machine. Photo by Martin Rouse © CC BY-NC 3.0

All was not lost, because Railbus W79978 was put to good use as a static exhibit where the public could enter and view the interior – which included an information stand that also offered some DEPG merchandise in the form of our D1010 booklet and D7018 booklet. Many thanks to Martin for keeping the DEPG in mind and making the most of this opportunity to remind Swindonians about the existence of the DEPG.

Railbus W79978 was open to visitors at Hayes Knoll on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway on 2nd/3rd July 2022 and included an information stand that offered DEPG booklets, membership forms and Newsletters alongside other fund-raising items. Photo by Martin Rouse © CC BY-NC 3.0

OTHER NEWS: We hosted two visitors from YOUCHOOS on Sunday 3rd July and the WSR kindly issued a cab pass so that they could travel in the cab of ‘Hymek’ D7018 to record the sounds of the loco in operation; not just the engine, but every small detail such as doors opening and closing, engine starting and the sound of controls being moved. The reason – YOUCHOOS provide electronic sound cards to railway modellers so that their miniature locos can sound like the real thing. We hope to provide a link to the finished product as soon as it is ready.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER continues to receive donations and sponsorship of patches, and we now have quite a backlog of patches to engrave. The holdup has been the need to have the patches prepared sufficiently to allow the engraving to work well and provide a proper lasting mark on the metal itself, not just a mark through paint or filler. We still have plenty of patch areas to engrave, but here’s an example of a BIRTHDAY PRESENT WITH A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE:

Many thanks to the photographers who shared their work under a Creative Commons licence for this not-for-profit DEPG-themed birthday card. The proceeds were allocated to the D1010 Restoration Fund. © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 now carries an engraving commorating the 30th Birthday of Christopher Schiller, thanks to the support of father and DEPG member Ken. Many thanks to all who have supported and continue to support D1010 ! Photo taken at Williton on 25th June 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP, so click on the images below for an update of fundraising status or to make a donation. We are making steady progress on the restoration of this massive locomotive but we have a lot of expenses ahead of us, so we need to keep our fund raising effort going for a while longer yet. We know that times are hard, but please do what you can to help.

Continued progress on D1010 has now reached a milestone as Colin and his team have completed ALL BODYWORK REPAIRS ON THE ‘A’ SIDE OF THE LOCOMOTIVE and have now turned their attention to the ‘A’ cab front. The photos below tell the story. Work also took place on the headcode boxes, removing the layers of old paint, attending to corrosion and overhauling the mechanisms so that the roller blinds can actually roll ! There is a lot to do on this massive and complex locomotive, so PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND HELP IF YOU CAN !

D1010 – this view of the cab roof on the secondman’s side at ‘A’ end shows a cracked weld that ran almost to the centre of the roof, allowing rainwater to enter and slowly rot the skin, especially in the corners. D1010 – the damaged skin was removed and the support structure beneath was found to be in good condition, avoiding the need for further peeling. Photo taken at Williton on Monday 27th June 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the big hole that had existed in this corner has now been repaired. The inner weld will be dressed after the windscreen has been removed (the window seals are known source of water leakage). Photo taken at Williton on Tuesday 28th June 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the cab roof has now been repaired – another task that can be ticked off the list. Many thanks to Colin and his assistants Geoff and Tim for this superb work. Photo taken at Williton on Tuesday 28th June 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – Bob is the kind of volunteer who always tackles his work with an infectious smile and a laugh ! Pictured at Williton on Saturday 2nd July 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

For those who prefer to remain anonymous, a unique reference number will be allocated and engraved instead.

See our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER web page or click on the image below for more details !

NOTE: EVERYONE WHO HAS ALREADY DONATED £25 OR MORE SINCE JULY 2021 HAS BEEN RECOGNISED and has been allocated an appropriate area on one of the patches or parts that have already been applied to the loco. Donations of smaller sums that accumulate to £25 are also eligible, so donate what you can when you can, and we will keep track of your total donations. Use our CONTACT FORM if you want to register your previous donations to D1010 for this campaign.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco will be in use for three days this week hauling a freight train in association with the training of three qualified steam locomotive drivers who want to add the Class 33 diesel to their driving portfolios. The freight movements will be performed under the supervision of WSR Traction Inspector John Leach and details can be found in our latest DIESELGEN posting.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently at Bishops Lydeard, fresh from an ‘A’ exam and available for service after having received attention to one of her exhauster contactors during her recent visit to Williton.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – in a demonstration of the close co-operation between all restoration teams at Williton, Saturday 2nd July saw a re-organisation in the loco shed that allowed Class 14 D9518 to be moved further into the shed so that D7017 could be brought inside as well. This was done to allow the roof of the ‘Hymek’ to be removed to gain access to the engine components that need to be lifted out through the roof aperture. The prospect of having to do this outdoors during seagull nesting season was too dangerous (and unsanitary) to contemplate!

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 was shunted into the loco shed on number 3 road at Williton on Saturday 2nd July so that her roof can be removed and the large and heavy engine components lifted out, to allow access to the cylinder head. Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 (ROF1) provided the tractive effort, seen here in the careful hands of Martin Howard. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 was moved inside the loco shed on number 3 road at Williton on Saturday 2nd July so that her engine repairs can be progressed without the participation of the local seagull population. A nice touch is the illumination of the road indicator (orange arrow, top left) that was acquired from Bristol Bath Road depot, although we suspect that Martin already knew which road he was to choose – it would be the one with the open door!

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – progress was affected this week due to the need to re-organise the items that were lined up on number 3 road in the shed, to make space for ‘Hymek’ D7017, but the restoration team did manage to fit in some feats of progress such as re-mounting the cooler group on the ‘long end’ of the loco while preparing the brake system components for re-installation. The below photos show the ‘before and after’ sequence on number 3 road in the loco shed:

D9518 – the loco frames get towed out of the shed so that the cab assembly can be moved outside and sheeted over, hopefully for no longer than the next few weeks. Volunteer Andy P can be seen in the foreground, working on the brake rigging components. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 2nd July 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D9518 – the ‘new order’ on number 3 road in the loco shed – the Class 14 cab has been moved outside and the loco frames have been moved forward so that ‘Hymek’ D7017 can be fitted in and the shed doors closed. This will allow the engine repair work to continue without restrictions. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 2nd July 2022 by Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 3.0

Click on the image to find the options for supporting D9518.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco is still in demand and performing well on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. The recent substitution for an unavailable steam engine has resulted in more running and more hours. Excellent !

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – the loco has been ‘in the works’ at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the latest news is that the triple pump has now been replaced, which is a very difficult task on a dual-braked Class 47 because of the seriously over-crowded equipment room that the loco type ended up with, so well done to the team at Grosmont ! We hope to get news of her being out on a test run soon.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – as pictured previously, this little loco has again been proving her worth during depot shunts, although she failed to start at first, due to a faulty non-return valve in her fuel pump. This delayed proceedings for a while, but was resolved in time for the job to be completed, although it did result in some late dinners for several of our volunteers!

BOOK REVIEW – we don’t have time for a new book review this week, but we do now have stock of these three books by Anthony P.

ON SHED – we will have to skip this feature this week, but we will be back with a new thread next week.

DEPG NEWS – the new online membership system has now been updated to allow the use of card payment and Apple Pay, in addition to PayPal, so this system will be the preferred way of renewing membership in future. Our website will be updated ASAP.

One important point to note is that all members who wish to continue using the previous paper-based system can continue to do so. Our new membership secretary CHRIS SHIELDS will write to members when their memberships are due for renewal and payment can be made by cheque via post as previously. Please send all communications to our Williton address – click this link to our About Us page.

MANY THANKS to Chris for taking on more work for the benefit of the DEPG !

Between now and then, the WSRA will be hosting the long-awaited return of the STEAM RALLY at Norton Fitzwarren, so keep these dates free and make a plan to attend what promises to be a very enjoyable event !

The timetables and the dates for the 2022 special events are as follows, so please make a note and ADD THESE DATES TO YOUR DEPG CALENDARS:

  • Weekly Roundup – 26-Jun-22

Beyer Peacock Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 was busy working the Minehead to Bishops Lydeard return service (two full round trips) on both Saturday and Sunday 25th/26th June. The 60-year-old loco looked like new and sounded absolutely wonderful ! D7018 was pictured at the first Williton station stop of the day on Saturday 25th June 2022 with DEPG stalwart Terry Deacon covering the secondman duties. The highly variable weather of the last weekend was made all the more tolerable by the sight and sound of ‘Hymek’ D7018 working a six-coach train on the Minehead to Bishops Lydeard diagram that includes two round trips totalling 80 miles of running. The blustery weather provided spells of bright sunshine punctuated by frequent and very heavy thunderstorms, complete with hail at times !

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 paused at Washford station just after a shower had passed through, providing a perfect opportunity for this wonderful photo of the storm in the background, complete with a rainbow ! This has to be a 2023 DEPG calendar candidate – do you have photos that you think would be good for the next calendar ? Now is the time to submit them for consideration. For our next two running dates, Sat/Sun 03/04 July, ‘Hymek’ D7018 will again be hauling the two return services that originate at Minehead, so make the most of this opportunity to enjoy the ‘Maybach Music’ and come along to the WSR and take a ride. The loco will be stabled at Minehead throughout this week, providing a nice early 1960s embellishment to the GWR-era branch terminus.

The BLUE timetable applies and can be found by clicking this link or by visiting our new DIESEL RUNNING DATES page. Any additional or updated information will be announced by the WSR and via DIESELGEN as soon as possible.

DIESEL RUNNING DATES – we have created a new page on our website and we will be updating it on a regular basis to provide a quick and easy reference to diesel running for the whole of the 2022 season.

Last week, we featured a link to a webpage for Railbus W79978 which is about to undergo restoration at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway. This 1958-vintage machine will be showcased at the S&CR Diesel Gala on 2nd and 3rd July where locomotives of classes 03, 08, 09 and 73 will also be active. Click here or on the images below for more information about W79978 that has been provided by owner and DEPG member Martin Rouse.

Several readers have commented on this feature and we will keep the W79978 web page updated with information and photos as we receive them from Martin. We also received some wonderful BR-era colour photos from well-known railwayman and author BERNARD MILLS showing the Railbus ready for work at Boscarne Junction in December 1966, just six weeks before these public services were withdrawn from what is now the Bodmin & Wenford Railway. Many thanks to Bernard for sharing these images with us (see the W79978 page). We wish Martin good luck and every success with this excellent and worthwhile heritage restoration project.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER has been boosted by donations and by sponsorship of patches, but WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP, so click on the images below for an update of fundraising status or to make a donation. We are making steady progress on the restoration of this massive locomotive but we have a lot of expenses ahead of us, so we need to keep our fund raising effort going for a while longer yet. We know that times are hard, but please do what you can to help.

Continued progress on D1010 has now reached a milestone as Colin and his team have just completed ALL BODYWORK REPAIRS ON THE ‘A’ SIDE OF THE LOCOMOTIVE and will now turn their attention to the ‘A’ cab front and the cab sheeting on the secondman’s side (‘A’ end, ‘B’ side). Work to refit the many parts that have been removed is lagging behind due to attention having been diverted to diesel gala tasks and the repair of ‘Hymek’ D7017, but the dedicated D1010 team are making steady progress behind the scenes. PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND HELP IF YOU CAN !

D1010 – this view of ‘A’ end shows the ‘A’ side corner has been fully repaired and is now ready for repainting and for the engraving of sponsor names and numbers (see our SPONSOR A PATCH scheme). Can anyone provide any information about the ‘WESTERN RED GRIFFIN‘ headboard ? Photo taken at Williton on Saturday 25th June 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the driver’s side window frame repair (‘A’ side) has been completed and awaits the installation of the fairing that provides the finished look. The underlying strength has been restored by fresh steel. Photo taken at Williton on Tuesday 21st June 2022 by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the driver’s side window frame (‘A’ side) with the fairing added, also showing the 6mm diameter drain hole that will be monitored for water egress in future. Small features such as this will allow the locomotive to resist the forces of nature and prevent internal corrosion damage that often remains hidden until it reaches the outer skin.

For those who prefer to remain anonymous, a unique reference number will be allocated and engraved instead.

See our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER web page for more details !

NOTE: EVERYONE WHO HAS ALREADY DONATED £25 OR MORE SINCE JULY 2021 WILL BE RECOGNISED and will be allocated an appropriate area on one of the patches or parts that have already been applied to the loco. Donations of smaller sums that accumulate to £25 are also eligible, so donate what you can when you can, and we will keep track of your total donations. Use our CONTACT FORM if you want to register your previous donations to D1010 for this campaign.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco has returned to the role of standby locomotive and was also used to position Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 at Minehead in preparation for her two weekends of BLUE timetable duties. The Class 33 wil then be used to provide a training platform for three qualified steam locomotive drivers who want to add the Class 33 diesel to their driving portfolios, under the supervision of WSR Traction Inspector John Leach.

Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) hauled Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 from Williton to Minehead on 23rd June 2022 to position the ‘Hymek’ for her weekend duties under the BLUE timetable. The Class 33 also had her own tasks to perform from Minehead the following week. Image by Railcam UK and the WSR © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently at Williton undergoing attention to some minor issues, but remains in a serviceable condition in case she is called upon to assist in the running of the railway.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – the loco is ready to go under the crane so that the roof panels can be lifted off. This will then allow the air intake ducting and intercooler to be lifted out so that the cambox that runs across all eight cylinders in the bank can then be removed. This will then reveal the number 1 cylinder head so that the joint ring can be replaced and any other issues attended to. We hope to be able to move the loco under cover to attend to this work, because putting the roof back on after every work session is very tedious ! Keep an eye on the Williton Railcam to monitor the progress with this loco.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – as covered earlier, this loco is stabled at Minehead and is next due to perform on the 10:00 and 14:30 Minehead to Bishops Lydeard return services on Sat/Sun 2nd/3rd July. Keep an eye on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page for updates or join the DIESELGEN email bulletin group (which also includes information about non-public services, where the information is available to us sufficiently in advance). Please come along and ride behind the ‘Hymek’ and support our diesel running opportunities if you can. Thanks !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – more progress this week as the brake frame assembly has now been re-mounted on the loco frames and is ready to be connected up to the various pipes and conduits. This meticulously-restored and complex assembly includes all of the brake system control valves as well as the compressor and the air receivers. In parallel, the task of acquiring replacement couplings for the generator drive shaft has progressed as far as the quotation stage, but they have become very expensive. We are currently looking for opportunities to acquire a pair of new couplings at a more realistic price.

D9518 – the carefully-restored brake frame assembly was readied for lifting back onto the loco frames at Williton on Saturday 25th June 2022. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D9518 – the brake frame assembly has now returned to its proper position, bolted to the frames and straddling the generator (which is now painted black as per the original paint scheme) at the ‘short end’ of the loco. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 25th June 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D9518 – the Laycock ‘Layrub’ two-point flexible couplings that are used at each end of the generator drive shaft are in need of replacement. It is too risky to attempt to replace the rubber bushes alone because a failure of this component in service would cause serious damage to all of the parts in the vicinity. So, we need to dig deep and buy two new couplings. Can you help us ? Pictured at Williton on Saturday 25th June 2022 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – this loco continues to be in regular use on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. The latest news is that the loco has again been substituting for a steam loco on a scheduled public service and is performing well and sounding great ! Well done D9526 !

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 can be seen on the left in this view of the yard outside Tenterden Shed, behind Stroudley A1X ‘Terrier’ 2678 (aka ‘Knowle’), with classmate D9504 opposite on the right. Pictured on 18th June 2022 by Simon Purvis © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – the loco has been ‘in the works’ at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the latest news is that triple pump has been replaced. There are some overhaul tasks still to be completed, but we hope to get news of her being out on a test run soon.

Class 47 47077 (D1661, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ was shunted into the yard at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on 8th June 2022 by resident English Electric Class 37 37 264 (D6964). Photo by DEPG member Martin Fisher © CC BY-NC 3.0

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – no change this week.

BOOK REVIEW – the continuing ‘buzz’ that has been created by the highly successful visit of Class 17 ‘Clayton’ D8568 to the WSR has prompted us to obtain stock of the excellent book by Anthony P. ON SHED – staying with the Class 17 ‘Claytons’, here’s another shot from regular contributor Barry Gay, taken at a time when the whole class were being withdrawn from service and put into store, awaiting a decision about their future. In the end, all except D8568 were cut up for scrap. Many thanks to Barry for continually sharing his work with us.

This photograph shows four Class 17 ‘Claytons’ on one of the ‘scrap lines’ at Polmadie depot, Glasgow in 1971. The loco in full view of the camera being D8548. All of these locos had been robbed of parts by this stage, so they were doomed to an early appointment with the cutter’s torch. Some had only worked for three years. DEPG NEWS – the Board met online on Friday 24th June 2022 so that the Saturday could be kept free for supporting the diesel-hauled services under the BLUE timetable. A synopsis of this meeting will be prepared ASAP and will be shared with all DEPG members, either by email or by post in the next Newsletter mailing (August).

This meeting resulted in several changes, including the appointment of CHRIS SHIELDS as MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY and the approval for the introduction of the ‘Membermojo‘ GDPR-compliant membership system that will help us maintain our membership records up-to-date and encourage new members.

We have emailed all members for whom we hold email addresses and we will be writing to those who have chosen the ‘paper’ method of communication. We will continue to offer a fully-paper-based membership option including payment by cheque … even by cash for those calling-in at Williton or attending a sales stand at an event.

MANY THANKS to Chris for taking on more work for the benefit of the DEPG !

AN IMPORTANT NOTE FOR YOUR DIARY – the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the DEPG is scheduled to take place on the afternoon of Saturday 3rd September 2022, at Williton. All members have been advised via the May Newsletter mailing. The AGM document package will be sent out in August along with the next Newsletter.

The DEPG hosted a visit to 25 members of the WELLS RAILWAY FRATERNITY on the very hot afternoon of Wednesday 22nd June 2022 and provided a tour of the depot including cab visits to Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 and Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017. The visitors were suitably impressed and made the most of every minute until they had to head for home on the 17:15 service to Bishops Lydeard. Many thanks to Carol, Natalie and Mark Ireland for attending at Williton in support of this visit !
