After progress made with maintenance and engine oil checks at Williton last weekend, Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 has been rostered for use on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May on the 10:00 Minehead (MD) to Bishops Lydeard (BL) 80-mile diagram.

NOTE: this is a CHANGE from the previously published running dates of 13/14 May (those dates will be Class 33 hauled instead). The change has become necessary because of crew rostering constraints and we apologise for any inconvenience this change may have caused.

The BLUE timetable will apply and booked times are as follows (Saturday 20th may differ slightly but details are not available as yet):

Depart MD 10:00 arrive BL   11:30

Depart BL   12:30 arrive MD 13:50

Depart MD 14:30 arrive BL   15:55

Depart BL   16:35 arrive MD 1800

Other public services are also scheduled – see the WSR timetable page for the latest details.

Please come along if you can and enjoy the 80-mile ride behind D7017 !

Sister loco D7018 is now receiving attention to minor tasks, all of which will be completed in time for her to return to service for the 2023 SUMMER DIESEL FESTIVAL that takes place on the WSR from Thursday 8th June through to Saturday 10th June.

Our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page has been updated and now carries the list of the diesel-hauled public services for 2023. This page is used in conjunction with DIESELGEN to provide a complete picture of diesel locomotive activities on the WSR:

  • Weekly Roundup – 16-Apr-23

As reported last week, the WSR 2023 running season has got off to an excellent start with all services being delivered as planned and Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) working the 10:00 Minehead 80-mile diagram under the BLUE timetable (4 services each way per day) on Monday 10th and Sunday 16th April. The railway changed to the RED timetable (3 services each way per day) from Tuesday 18th which applies for the two weeks up to the SPRING STEAM SPECTACULAR, and then the BLUE timetable returns and remains right through to the 25th July when the summer peak YELLOW timetable (5 services each way per day) comes into force. For details of planned DIESEL-HAULED public services, see the DIESEL RUNNING DATES page on our website.

Last Saturday 15th April saw the repeat of the WSR’s very succesful ‘VOLUNTEERING TRAIN‘ concept, where one carriage of the 10:00 Minehead service was dedicated to members of the public who were seeking volunteering opportunities within any of the organisations that make up the ‘WSR family’. During the trip to Bishops Lydeard, representatives of the various organisations and departments made their ‘pitch’ and explained what their organisations do and what kind of opportunities they offer. The train reversed at Bishops Lydeard, departing at 12:30 and a second carriage load received the same (or similar!) information on the way to Minehead.

The DEPG were represented by Natalie and Andy, who quickly became involved in discussions with several potential volunteers, some of whom have already completed their applications forms and requested dates for ‘taster’ days where they can come along to Williton and see how and where they could contribute. The event will be repeated again in May and we expect to be just as busy and continue to expand the team. The DEPG currently lists 59 active volunteers, a significant increase over the past few years, and all are welcomed. The depot at Williton still has three days per week where it is not in use, and this shows the untapped potential that needs to be resourced, so please let us know by using our CONTACT FORM if you are interested in volunteering !

WSR 2-6-0 ‘Mogul’ 9351 prepares to depart from Williton in the directon of Minehead with the 16:35 service from Bishops Lydeard while Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 and Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 (with engine running) watch and enjoy the welcome period of fine weather. On Wednesday 12th April, we welcomed Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 back to Williton, to the accompaniment of heavy rain and strong winds! The loco was swapped with Class 09 shunter D4107 (09 019) who returned to Bishops Lydeard where her winter maintenance programme could be completed by a session over the pit at Westridge Shed for traction motor inspection and lubrication. The return of D9526 was captured on a short video clip that can be viewed via our website by clicking this link or clicking on the photo below:

    2023 TIMETABLE NEWS:

The railway is now open mostly five days per week (closed on Mondays and Fridays except for bank holidays and special events) and dates scheduled for diesel locomotive haulage are listed on our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page

The next special event will be the SPRING STEAM SPECTACULAR which will run from Friday April 28th through to Bank Holiday Monday 1st May, with the planned appearance of GWR 4-6-0 4953 ‘PITCHFORD HALL’ plus three ‘MANORS’ and a ‘SAINT’ plus the rest of the home-based fleet, so an absolute feast for GWR fans ! The DEPG depot at Williton will be open to visitors and will feature ROD’S MODEL RAILWAY sales stand alongside our own DEPG sales stand. For details, click this link to the WSR website.

Keep an eye on the DIESEL RUNNING DATES page and mark the days that interest you on your calendar, so that you can make a plan to come along and ride behind your favourite type of locomotive. Click on the banner below to go to the page on our website:

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – the team continued their diverse work in multiple areas of the loco, moving their tasks along on a step-by-step basis. The most significant visual progress was again made by Colin F and the ‘transmission team’ as the filling pump assembly and the output shaft assembly were completed and made ready for re-attachment to the casing. The progress in other areas was not so camera-worthy, but useful just the same, with Ian at work on the bodyside finish and Gordon disconnecting the cooler group at ‘A’ end, while Steve continued with the cab wiring at ‘B’ end. Here are some photos:

D1010 – the filling pump assembly (in the foreground) and the output shaft assembly (with the large double-helical gear) were completed by the team at Williton on 11th April 2023. D1010 – the timeline for this restoration project has been published in the DEPG Spring 2023 Newsletter that has been sent to all registered DEPG members. The narrative that goes with this timeline will be published on our website ASAP and covered in a future roundup. DEPG © CC BY-NC 3.0

To continue our rate of progress requires FUNDING and we give our thanks to everyone who has supported D1010 by sponsoring or donating during these difficult times. If you are able to do so, please SPONSOR A PATCH because there is plenty of recently-added metal that still needs engraving. Photographs and certificates of sponsorship will be sent out to all who have sponsored this phase of the restoration work, and we are applying more resources to catch up with this obligation and deliver the documents. Click the image below to sponsor a patch. Thank you in advance for your support !

See our CAMPAIGN for CAMPAIGNER web page for more details. We still have a lot of work to do on this massive locomotive, so PLEASE DO COME ALONG AND HELP IF YOU CAN !

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is now inside the paint tunnel in the Swindon Shed at Williton for a paintwork refresh in the hands of WSR Restorations. This loco is expected to be out of traffic until late April.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is outstationed at Minehead and has been working her BLUE timetable duties. Her next runs are scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Monday 6/7/8th May.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – Tom checked the engine oil sump drain again on Saturday and found a very small amount of coolant present. This could be a left-over from last week or it could be fresh leakage, so the engine was pre-heated and started again to allow it to run for a longer period. The check will be conducted again next week, and a decision on changing the oil will be taken when more information is available. To rush the decision would increase the risk, so we will use the time that we have and make a careful and informed decision. The loco is expected to be available for return to service in 2023 either way, the decision having more impact on the 2024 running season and the longer-term plans for overhauling the locomotive.

D7017 was started up while stabled on number 2 road at Williton on Saturday 15th April 2023 while Barclay 578 (ROF 1) was also running and out of the shed under her own power for the first time this year. The weather was perfect for the occasion. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is awaiting attention to a short list of issues that were identified during the loaded test run that took place in December 2022. Work is expected to start on this loco in late April, after completion of sister loco D7017. The issues will be addressed in time for the Diesel Gala on June 8th through 10th.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – making up for the lack of photos last week, the following selection provides the evidence that proves that this project is constantly moving along:

D9518 – one of the six refurbished brake hangers is held in the vertical position by Terry at Williton on Saturday 15th April 2023. D9518 – Terry provides some foot power to show how the brake hanger swings over to bring the brake shoe into perfect contact with the tyre of the wheel. The brake actuation is normally done by two powerful air brake cylinders between the frames, the force being transmitted to the hangers via the linkages. D9518 – still on the subject of that characteristic Colin G shine, take a look at the gleam around the works plate and the British Transport Commission (BTC) registration plate. The BTC plate was originally fitted to a steam locomotive that was made redundant by D9518, so the plate was transferred to D9518 and the registration records updated. The old ways were so simple. This loco is the subject of a fundraising appeal so please follow this link to find out more. We need your help ! In addition to funds, we also need plenty of HANDS. If you love the ‘Teddy Bears’ and you are not already a member of the DEPG, please join us so that you can become one of the team that is going to return D9518 to fully operational condition as ‘NCB No. 7‘.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – as previously reported, this loco returned to Williton on Wednesday 12th April and will now undergo attention to some maintenance items that have become due. The loco is fully serviceable and ready for use as soon as suitable opportunities arise.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is now back in regular use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and we have been receiving reports from our correspondent in the area, Martin Fisher, including the below photograph that showcases the amazing scenery through which this line traverses. Here’s some information that Martin provided about the location:

“This vantage point is about a mile walk from the lane that goes down to Levisham station – a relatively easy walk from the lane to the ruined Skelton Tower (built around 1830 by Rev Skelton, either as a shooting lodge or as a place to escape to for a quiet drink!). You only get a view of the NYMR northwards from here so the southbound trains are trundling downhill at this point, but the scenery is nice!”

Many thanks to Martin for keeping us fed with photographs of ‘NORTH STAR‘ and information about his ‘neck of the woods’.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this loco underwent an engine test run and a Vehicle Inspection & Brake Test (VIBT) on Saturday 15th April 2023 and passed with flying colours, so well done to Tony and our supporting volunteers for doing such a great job of looking after her ! The next step is to give the little loco a wash and brush up and apply the cabside lettering that has been waiting for warmer weather – which at last seems to be arriving.

Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 (ROF 1) was subjected to an engine test run at Williton on Saturday 15th April 2023 during which the engine speed was held steady at 1,500 rpm and the governor behaviour was checked and confirmed to be OK. Photo by Martin Howard © CC BY-NC 3.0

ON SHED – this week, we have been made aware of a YouTube video that has recently been made available showing our very own D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ but in the guise of D1035 ‘WESTERN YEOMAN’ and wearing ‘Desert Sand’ livery. The video footage was taken by Martin Smith at Didcot Railway Centre in 1990 and also features glimpses of ‘Hymek’ D7018 and the occasional passing ’47’. The relaxed health & safety approach of the time is quite interesting, and the video is well worth watching. Click here or on the image below to go to the YouTube video. Many thanks to Martin for bringing his video to our attention.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – the last week saw progress being made internally rather than externally, with Steve working his way through the wiring and switchgear under the driver’s desk at ‘B’ end while Gordon disconnected the cooler group at ‘A’ end as the first step towards having the cooler group lifted out for a thorough refurbishment. Andy R and Natalie removed several corroded air pipes from benetah the gangway on the ‘B’ side, cleaning up the area as they went along (this will be a lengthy task!). In parallel, the ‘transmission team’ under the leadership of Colin F made significant steps with the re-assembly of the largest and the smallest shafts, complete with new bearings and seals. Here are some photos:

D1010 – the very large and heavy output gear from ‘B’ transmission was re-fitted to the output shaft with the help of the hydraulic press at the WSR Restorations ‘Swindon Shed’ on Monday 3rd April 2023. The thin black pipe is for the oil injection equipment that has to be used at the same time as the press to achieve the required fit against the tapered shaft. Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is now inside the paint tunnel in the Swindon Shed at Williton for a paintwork refresh in the hands of WSR Restorations. This loco is expected to be out of traffic until late April.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is outstationed at Minehead and is available for her BLUE timetable duties, the next run being Sunday 16th April.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is now stabled on number 2 road at Williton in preparation for an oil change. The sump drains were sampled on Saturday 8th April by Tom and Ian R and the engine run for 30 minutes by John so that the drains can be checked again next weekend before an oil change is performed. This is to ensure that there is no significant leakage of coolant taking place within the engine. A coolant leak would quickly result in a very expensive oil change becoming spoiled, so it is important to take samples and check carefully before moving forward. This loco is rostered for service under the BLUE timetable on the weekend of 13/14th May. Click here or on the image below for a short video clip of the engine start-up.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is awaiting attention to a short list of issues that were identified during the loaded test run that took place in December 2022. Work is expected to start on this loco in late April, after completion of sister loco D7017. The issues will be addressed in time for the WSR’s Summer Diesel Festival that takes place between Thursday 8th June and Saturday 10th June 2023.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the team progressed the work on the brake rigging last week, and ran into some snags with some of the brake hangers which were found to be bent, no doubt the result of a derailment when the loco was in use during National Coal Board days at Ashington Colliery in Northumberland. The bent hangers have been sent out to subcontract for straightening, but if this proves unsuccesful, new hangers will have to be made. Meanwhile, Colin and John continued their work re-fitting the battery boxes and preparing for re-wiring. Apologies for the lack of photos this week, but we will compensate for this in the next roundup.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – as stated in a previous roundup, the haulage turns that were allocated to this loco have had to be cancelled due to the need to haul 6 or 7 coaches on those days. This is the result of the commercial success of the WSR’s ‘Fish and Chip’ and ‘Cream Tea’ specials which require the full length rake of coaches. We are in discussion with the WSR about suitable alternative dates where the Class 14 could be loaded with no more than 5 coaches and we will send out a DIESELGEN bulletin as soon as we have that information.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco underwent repairs to her brake cylinders at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway last week, but we have been advised that she returned to service on Sunday 9th hauling the scheduled diesel diagram. Although the issue only affected one of the brake cylinders, the whole set has been overhauled to ensure that the issue does not crop up later in the season. We look forward to hearing more about this loco soon.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – this loco is waiting for an engine test run so that the overspeed setting can be adjusted and verified. This will be followed by a Vehicle Inspection & Brake Test (VIBT), after which the recent work done on this loco will be considered as complete and the loco will be ready to move outdoors.

ON SHED – staying with our recent theme of Bristol Bath Road depot, we have another photo by Mark Bladwell, this time featuring a wide range of locomotives from the humble Class 03 shunter in the background through classes 25, 31 and 37 to the mighty ‘Westerns’, of which three are pictured in this view dated May 1975. The class 25s and 31s have taken up the work of the ‘Hymeks’ that were withdrawn over the previous two years. Many thanks to Mark for sharing his photo with us all.

  • Weekly Roundup – 02-Apr-23

Class 09 D4107 (09 019) was in use at Williton on the afternoon of Saturday 1st April 2023 to shunt the yard while being test run following maintenance and repairs. The loco is seen on number 1 road at the end of the day, just before taking up her final position. Photo by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

The maintenance and repair work that was being conducted on Class 09 D4107 (09 019) has now been completed with the exception of the underframe inspection and lubrication tasks that require the loco to be placed over a pit. On the very wet morning of Saturday 1st April, the reconditioned heat exchanger elements were installed and later in the day, the loco was test run by WSR Diesel Traction Inspector John Leach, who also performed a yard shunt so that ‘Hymek’ D7017 could move to number 2 road in preparation for an oil change. The ’09’ is expected to move back to Bishops Lydeard at some point in the near future, at which time Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 will return to Williton.

Class 09 D4107 (09 019) received two refurbished oil cooler elements as a conclusion of her maintenance and repair work programme at Williton on Saturday 1st April 2023. Many thanks to Ian R and Tom who have been working on this locomotive for several weeks to get all of the tasks completed. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 09 D4107 (09 019) has also received attention from other volunteers including Terry, pictured here on 1st April 2023 armed with WD40, a mallet and a determined look as he persuades the radiator shutters to operate smoothly. Photo by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 09 D4107 (09 019) differs from the far more numerous Class 08 by having a higher maximum speed as a trade-off against a lower hauling capacity, but these characteristics are quite suitable for a heritage railway. The ‘office’ has a very old-style look, because the design of these machines dates back to the 1940s. Pictured at Williton on 1st April 2023 by Jon Tooke © CC BY-NC 3.0

The railway is operating an almost daily schedule of running throughout the Easter holiday period, with our Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) working the 10:00 Minehead diagram under the BLUE timetable on Friday 7th April then again on Sunday 9th and Monday 10th. The timings of these services are as follows:

Depart Minehead at 10:00 arrive Bishops Lydeard at 11:30

Depart Bishops Lydeard at 12:30 arrive Minehead at 13:50

Depart Minehead at 14:30 arrive Bishops Lydeard at 15:55

Depart Bishops Lydeard at 16:35 arrive Minehead at 18:00

As stated last week and repeated for the benefit of anyone who missed the last edition, the ‘Crompton’ will also be covering this same working on Sunday 16th April although this working was previously allocated for Class 14 D9526 haulage. The reason for the change is that the Class 14 has a haulage limit of 4 coaches to maintain time on the long gradients of the WSR and the services that we had planned for the ‘Teddy Bear’ will now be formed of 6 or 7 coaches due to the commercial success of the ‘Fish and Chip’ and the ‘Cream Tea’ services which will take them beyond the haulage limit for the 650hp locomotive, therefore needing Class 33 or Class 35 haulage instead.

While disappointing for our Class 14 followers and volunteers, we cannot risk damaging the loco, so we will be working with the WSR to find suitable services that can be operated with 4 coaches or less and we will be publishing those dates as soon as possible. Meanwhile, our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page has been updated to reflect the changes.

    2023 TIMETABLE NEWS:

The railway is open most days throughout the first two weeks of April during which the BLUE timetable will be in operation.

The lineup for the SPRING STEAM SPECTACULAR event which will run from Friday April 28th through to Bank Holiday Monday 1st May has been further boosted with the planned appearance of GWR 4-6-0 4953 ‘PITCHFORD HALL’ plus three ‘MANORS’ and a ‘SAINT’ plus the rest of the home-based fleet, so an absolute feast for GWR fans ! For details, click this link to the WSR website.

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – more progress has been made of the res-assembly of the ‘B’ transmission, with some of the largest components being worked on by Colin F, Geoff and Tim during the last week. Meanwhile, Gordon and Leroy worked on the disconnection of the ‘A’ cooler group while Steve worked on the ‘B’ cab electrics and Ian continued progressing with the bodywork. Andy R and Natalie started work on the brake system overhaul by identifying and removing corroded steel pipework that will be replaced with new pipework before the loco re-enters service. Here are some photos:

D1010 – the large and heavy reverser shaft bearings were replaced at Williton on Monday 27th March 2023. Geoff tightened the housing bolts before fitting this sub-assembly to the splined shaft assembly that is pictured on the right hand side. Photo by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the reverser shaft assembly was completed at Williton on Tuesday 28th March 2023 after pressing on two sets of double-helical gear wheels and two bearing housings. Photo by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the largest single component in the L630rV transmission is the output gear wheel that is mounted onto the tapered section of the output shaft. This massive part is connected to the output shaft entirely through the friction of the very tight and precise fit of the gear hub to the tapered shaft. Pictured at Williton on Tuesday 28th March 2023 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the timeline for this restoration project has been published in the DEPG Spring 2023 Newsletter that has been sent to all registered DEPG members. The details will be published on our website ASAP and covered in a future roundup. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 1st April 2023 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco moved to Minehead on Monday 3rd April to be in position for her BLUE timetable duties from Friday 7th April onwards.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco was moved from number 1 road to number 2 road at Williton on Saturday 1st April 2023 so that an oil change can be performed and the loco prepared for service under the BLUE timetable on the weekend of 13/14th May.

D7017 was moved to number 2 road at Williton on Saturday 1st April 2023 so that an oil change can be performed. This will then complete the work needed to prepare her for service during the weekend of 13/14 May.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the team are making good progress although team leader Simon P has been out of action for the last few weeks due to a health issue. We all wish him well for a speedy recovery – but the best we can do to cheer him up is to continue making progress on his favourite loco project. Here are some photos covering the recent activities:

D9518 – following the visit of Terry, Nick and Tony to the Yeovil Hydraulics facility on Tuesday 21st March 2023 to use their press to install the new bushings into the brake hangers, the pins and brake block holders have now been attached to three of the six parts, pictured at Williton on 1st April 2023. The other three hangers need some more work to get them to this stage. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D9518 – meanwhile, Colin G applied a final coat of paint to the frames that will soon be carrying the battery boxes, which are just visible on the floor alongside the loco, wrapped in plastic sheeting. Pictured at Williton on Saturday 1st April 2023 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D9518 – the sections of new steel pipework that were made by Terry the previous week were pictured at Williton on Saturday 1st April 2023. The new pipework will have the surface rust removed and will be painted white to signify compressed air. White is also used for vacuum pipes, such as the larger diameter pipe behind. 7‘.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – as stated previously, the haulage turns that were allocated to this loco have had to be cancelled due to the need to haul 6 or 7 coaches on those days.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco has been in use on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway recently, covering for a steam locomotive that had developed a fault. The diesel developed a fault of her own over the weekend and that has caused her to be stood down for repairs, but the required parts are available and hopefully the loco will be available for service again soon.

ON SHED – this week, we have another photo taken at Bristol Bath Road by Mark Bladwell, this time featuring a pair of Class 31s that have been nicely spruced up for Royal Train duties. Does anyone have any information about the working that brought them to Bristol ? If so, please use our CONTACT FORM to share your knowledge with us all. Thanks !

A rare sight indeed, and many thanks to Mark for sharing his photo with us all.

DEPG NEWS – a Board Meeting was held at Williton on Saturday 25th March and a synopsis of the meeting is being prepared and will be emailed to all DEPG members for whom we hold a valid email address.

We take this opportunity to thank those volunteers who work on infrastructure projects that are out of the public eye and often not reported in Newsletters or Roundup. Last weekend, in very wet and stormy weather, DEPG stalwart Jon Tooke was at work in Williton yard, sorting out issues and keeping key pieces of equipment in working order. In parallel, Graham was working at home, compiling the mailshot for the Spring Newsletter, and he will back at the yard this weekend working on the new Oil Store.

Many thanks to those who work behind the scenes, including those working for the sales and marketing team, those compiling training records, those writing booklets and articles, researching and creating locomotive and component drawings, arranging new parts, the list is endless – but all of these efforts are very much appreciated !

The first two weekends of the 2023 running season have run to plan and the railway is now gearing up to prepare for two full weeks of almost daily running as we approach the Easter holiday period. Our Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) will be working the 10:00 Minehead diagram under the BLUE timetable on Friday 7th April then again on Sunday 9th and Monday 10th.

The ‘Crompton’ will also be covering this same working on Sunday 16th April although this working was previously allocated for Class 14 D9526 haulage.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 has been and is currently running on ‘green diesel’ or more accurately Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and has been starting easily and running with a clean exhaust. Although more expensive per litre, the benefits for a small loco such as the Class 14 are well worth considering. 2023 TIMETABLE NEWS:

The next services on the WSR will be this coming weekend with two locos in steam under the RED ALL-STEAM timetable on the Saturday and one steam plus the Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) operating under the RED STEAM & DIESEL timetable on the Sunday, along with a steam-hauled ‘QUANTOCK BELLE SUNDAY LUNCH‘ dining service. Then, the railway is open most days throughout the first two weeks of April.

The first scheduled diesel-hauled service for 2023 is booked for Friday 7th April and will feature haulage by Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057). LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – continuous effort on this loco is helping us make visible progress on multiple fronts, while detailed planning is also taking place in the background to arrange the major activities that will support the restoration plan, details of which will be provided in a future edition of ’roundup’. Meanwhile, the photos give just a taste of the various tasks that are being tackled at Williton:

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco is now inside the paint tunnel in the Swindon Shed at Williton for a paintwork refresh in the hands of WSR Restorations. This loco is expected to be out of traffic until late April.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco is currently the Duty Loco at Bishops Lydeard and will be moving to Minehead on Monday 3rd April to be in position for her BLUE timetable duties from Friday 7th April onwards.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – the review of the oil samples resulted in a decision being taken to change the engine oil and return the loco to service, so this work will be arranged during the next few weeks. This loco is scheduled to work the BLUE timetable on the weekend of 13/14th May.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is awaiting attention to a short list of issues that were identified during the loaded test run that took place in December 2022. Work is expected to start on this loco in late April, after completion of sister loco D7017 and the issues addressed in time for the Diesel Gala on June 8th through 10th.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the team have been hard at work on this loco and have progressed several tasks in parallel while also taking the time to participate in the annual meeting of the Class 14 Owners Group, which is an important forum at which to share information and knowledge, aimed at keeping the whole UK-wide fleet in good condition and in work for the long-term. Here below are some photos of the progress made during the last few weeks:

This loco is the subject of a fundraising appeal so please follow this link to find out more. We need your help ! In addition to funds, we also need plenty of HANDS. If you love the ‘Teddy Bears’ and you are not already a member of the DEPG, please join us so that you can become one of the team that is going to return D9518 to fully operational condition as ‘NCB No. 7‘.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 – as stated previously, the haulage turns that were allocated to this loco have had to be cancelled due to the need to haul 6 or 7 coaches on those days.

Class 47 47077 ‘NORTH STAR’ – this loco is currently stabled at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and has been in use recently, but more on this in the next edition of roundup.

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0DH 578 – the engine was started up on Tuesday 21st March 2023 and run for a short time to check that everything was OK. The loco was started again, later in the day, after attending to an issue with the battery isolator switch, which although brand new and suitably rated, did not last the course and was removed and scrapped. The sub-standard new part will be replaced with an old but reliable part that has been recovered from some redundant equipment.

Congratulations and many thanks to Tony for his excellent work on getting this very useful loco back into running condition and ready to undergo her Vehicle Inspection and Brake Test (VIBT) so that she can resume duties. The short video clip below shows the second engine run, made before attending to the governor settings. Click here or on the image below to launch the video:

ON SHED – last week, we featured a photo by Kelvin Lumb showing an unidentified Class 25 standing on the down goods relief line at Severn Tunnel Junction (STJ) in the summer of 1976 with a train of ‘Sealion’ ballast hopper wagons. A quick chat with former BR driver and DEPG volunteer Mike Harris revealed that this loco would have been returning the empty hoppers to Machen Quarry (to the west of Newport) for re-loading. The wagons would either have been consolidated with others already at STJ or worked onward to East Usk yard, to be trip worked to Machen by a Class 37. MANY THANKS to Kelvin for the photo and to Mike for the background information.

This week, we feature a photo from long-time DEPG member and Publicity Officer Mark Bladwell, with a memory of an enjoyable Open Day at Bristol Bath Road shed, long before the days of rigorous Health & Safety, with locomotives on the move while visitors wander around the yard. We are having some trouble identifying the participating locos, so please let us know by using our CONTACT FORM if you were also there and have a list of what locos were ‘on shed’ that day. Many thanks to Mark for sharing his photo.

The railway has reopened and once again, West Somerset has come alive with the sight and sound of railway locomotives, both steam and diesel. Last Saturday saw the first public walk-up services running on the WSR since last October, with two steam locos in use on the Saturday and two plus the Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) in use on the Sunday. In preparation for the re-opening, Class 33 D6575 (33 057) moved from Williton to Bishops Lydeard on Tuesday 14th to take up the Duty Loco role and to handle the offloading of BR(W) 4-6-0 7822 ‘FOXCOTE MANOR’ from road transport, in the absence of Class 09 shunter D4107 (09 019).

On the Friday (17th), sister loco D6566 (33 048) who had been stabled at Minehead in connection with crew refresher and competency checks hitched a ride back to Williton on the back of an Empty Coaching Stock train to take her place in the Swindon Shed paint tunnel, where she will receive a much-needed refresh to her early BR-era paintwork. On the same day, the Class 115 DMU moved from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard to be in position for her booked working on the Sunday.

On the Saturday, Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 was in use for crew refresher training at Bishops Lydeard, the result of which was the expansion of the pool of passed drivers to include several WSR staff drivers in addition to DEPG drivers. This will significantly expand the usefulness of this loco, especially while she stands-in for Class 09 shunter D4107 (09 019). She looked and sounded great as she headed off to Norton Fitzwarren. A short video was taken by Terry Deacon and can be viewed by clicking this link or clicking on the image below:

    2023 TIMETABLE NEWS:

The next services on the WSR will be this coming weekend with two locos in steam under the RED ALL-STEAM timetable, then the railway is open most days throughout the first two weeks of April.

The first scheduled diesel-hauled service for 2023 is booked for Friday 7th April and will feature haulage by Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) and Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 is booked for Sunday 16th April. Keep an eye on the DIESEL RUNNING DATES page and mark the days that interest you on your calendar, so that you can make a plan to come along and ride behind your favourite type of locomotive. LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – continuous progress is being made on three and sometimes four days per week as our volunteers both new and old get stuck in with their assigned tasks and make visible progress on multiple fronts. In the background, we have been working on the restoration plan and timeline, details of which are included in the latest DEPG Newsletter that is being distributed this weekend. Here are some photos to show just some of the work that is taking place:

D1010 – the filling valves that control the filling and emptying of the torque converters were cleaned and inspected at Williton on 13th March 2023 and found to be in very good condition. The leftmost valve handles the first stage and the rightmost valve handles the smaller-volume second and third stages. Photo by Colin Foxhall © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the gangway plate alongside the cooler group at ‘B’ end was drilled out and lifted by Natalie at Williton on Tuesday 14th March 2023 to allow inspection of the wiring and pipework runs beneath. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – the space made available by the removal of the cooler group elements made a convenient temporary storage place for the gangway plate. Pictured at Williton on 18th March 2023 by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

D1010 – as expected, the space underneath the gangway plate was full of dirt and oil in equal measure. The same will be true for all of the other sections of gangway plate that will need to be lifted so that the pipework and cable runs can be inspected. There is plenty of work to do, that’s for sure.

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco has been in use for crew training at Minehead and has now returned to Williton for a paintwork refresh. The loco is expected to be out of traffic until late April.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco took up the Duty Loco role at Bishops Lydeard on Tuesday 14th March.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – this loco is waiting for the results of the engine oil drain sampling before a decision can be taken on arranging an oil change. The loco is otherwise ready for service, apart from a post-wintering tidy-up.

Class 35 ‘Hymeks’ D7017 and D7018 are stabled outdoors on number 1 road at Williton. They were pictured from the platform of Williton Station on Friday 17th March 2023 by Josh Brinsford © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – this loco is awaiting attention to a short list of issues that were identified during the loaded test run that took place in December 2022. Work is expected to start on this loco in late April and the issues addressed in time for the Diesel Gala on June 8th through 10th.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the preparatory work on the cardan shaft safety bows and transmission tunnel continued in the hands of Colin G and Andy P, while John made more progress with the re-wiring. Terry and Nick prepared the brake hangers for re-bushing on the Tuesday and Tony worked on replacing the skins on the nose end doors. Here’s some photos (we will have more photos in the next roundup):

ON SHED – last week, we featured a photo by Kelvin Lumb showing 47 229 (formerly D1905) hauling a Ford Motor Co train loaded with brand new Mark II Ford Escorts eastwards through Bridgend station on Saturday 26th February 1977 and we asked for help in identifying the origin and destination of the train.

As it turns out, Brian Ringer (one of our founding members) had the ideal background to be able to provide the detail that we needed, and his response is shared below:

“Great shot of 47229 on a train heading east through Bridgend and the mystery of the Cartic loaded with Ford Escorts.

During my career with BR, I was Ford Motor Co. marketing manager in the Railfreight sector in the early 1980s, so these traffics were part of my “bailiwick”. At the time Ford had a complex set of train movements to move finished cars and parts between its various production plants. The Escort was produced at Halewood (Merseyside) and were moved by rail to a distribution depot at Severn Tunnel Junction (STJ) that was owned by Silcock and Colling – it was on the site of 86E STJ steam depot, just east of the station.

The same train also brought axles from the Ford plant at Swansea (adjacent to Burrows Sidings) to Halewood (and later had a portion from the Bridgend engine plant, when it opened in 1980). The cars and component vans were conveyed on the same train between Halewood and STJ and vice versa, with a feeder trip to/from STJ and Swansea Burrows sidings.

The most likely scenarios are either:

a/ there was a problem on the section of line between Maindee Junction and STJ meaning that the whole train went through to Swansea Burrows sidings and the photo shows the working from Swansea back to STJ for the Escorts to be unloaded at Silcock and Colling’s depot.

b/ the Cartic wagon had a maintenance problem and it went to Marcroft Wagon Repairs at Swansea to be fixed. It was highly unusual for a wagon to go for repairs whilst still loaded with 25 cars worth in excess of £100k.

The comment about imports via Fishguard sounds improbable as in my time, Ford never used Fishguard for imports or exports and the only other plant that produced Escorts in Europe was Koln (Cologne) in Germany. These cars were imported via Dagenham Dock (Essex).

All in all a very unusual photo with no obvious explanation, but splendid none the less.”

Many thanks to Brian for providing us with this interesting response. Here’s the photo again as a reminder:

47 229 (D1905) hauled a Ford Motor Co train loaded with Mk II Ford Escorts through Bridgend heading east on Saturday 26th February 1977, on the same day as the ‘WESTERN TRIBUTE’ railtour … which was the working that our photographer was really waiting for, if the truth be told. • DIESELGEN – D9526 driver training

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526was pictured at Bishops Lydeard on 22nd May 2021 by Paul Fleet © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 will be in use on Saturday 18th March for the purpose of driver refresher training, the objective being to widen the pool of ‘passed’ drivers to allow more frequent use of this very popular locomotive. This will be the first time that she will have been in use on WSR metals since June of 2021, just before she went out on a very successful 18-month hire to the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

The training will take place in the Norton Fitzwarren section, which is mostly out of the public view and we ask that trespassing rules are recognised and respected. The loco is expected to depart from Bishops Lydeard at 09:35 and is scheduled to return at 15:15, although these times are flexible.

This activity heralds the re-opening of the WSR on SATURDAY 18th March with an all-steam public service running under the RED ALL STEAM timetable on the Saturday and the introduction of the Class 115 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) under the RED timetable on the Sunday, which will also see the return of the QUANTOCK BELLE dining service with a Mother’s Day special.

Our DIESEL RUNNING DATES page has been updated and now carries the list of the diesel-hauled public services for 2023. This page is used in conjunction with DIESELGEN to provide a complete picture of diesel locomotive activities on the WSR:

  • Weekly Roundup – 12-Mar-23

The very cold weather returned last week and caused some minor disruptions, but the snow was very short-lived and it seems like it has been raining almost constantly since !

Outdoor activities were not an attractive option last Saturday 11th March but several jobs had to be performed so our gallant volunteers got on with the tasks and kept themselves busy to keep warm. The priority task was to prepare Class 33 D6575 (33 057) for her move to Bishops Lydeard on Tuesday 14th, where she was needed to handle the return of BR(W) 4-6-0 7822 ‘FOXCOTE MANOR’ in the absence of Class 09 shunter D4107 (09 019). Although Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 was available for use at Bishops Lydeard, the pool of passed drivers has not yet been expanded so use of this loco was not an option. However, this coming Saturday, this will be remedied by a driver training session that will take place in the Bishops Lydeard to Norton Fitzwarren section, where previous drivers can renew their ‘tickets’ for the forthcoming season.

Meanwhile, Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) was in use on Saturday 11th at Minehead in support of crew refresher training and competency testing, and will return to Williton on Friday 17th and will go straight into the Swindon Shed to undergo a full repaint, to be outshopped in the same green and cream livery as previously.

The outdoor maintenance work on shunter D4107 (09 019) was confined to the leaking oil cooler element and this was removed on Saturday 11th and prepared for shipment to APPLIED RADIATORS in Stoke-on-Trent for specialist repair.

Class 09 D4107 (09 019) – the radiator shutters at the nose end of the locomotive were opened up so that the leaking oil cooler element could be removed and sent to APPLIED RADIATORS for specialist repair. The photo shows the five water elements on the left and the two oil elements on the right, with Chris braving the weather to clean up as we went along. LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – more progress was made on various fronts last week as Gordon worked on the repaired headcode boxes and Roy dealt with several of the painting tasks on parts that have yet to be refitted to the loco. Steve, Andy and Natalie progressed with the cab wiring at ‘B’ end while Colin F, Geoff and Tim continued their excellent work on the ‘B’ transmission. Here are some photos:

Class 33 D6566 (33 048) – this loco has been in use for crew training at Minehead and will be returning to Williton on Friday 17th March for a re-paint.

Class 33 D6575 (33 057) – this loco was treated to a cab clean-up at Williton on Saturday 11th and a face wash on the Sunday, in advance of her return to the Duty Loco role on Tuesday 14th March.

D6575 (33 057) – the driver’s side of the ‘No. 2’ cab cleaned up quite nicely at Williton on Saturday 11th 2023, in advance of the loco returning to front line duty on Tuesday 14th. Photo by Natalie Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7017 – the engine was pre-heated by Leroy so that the engine oil drain points could be sampled and the oil examined by Neil, to determine if there was any water in the drains. So far so good, but there are few more drain points to be checked next weekend.

Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – the batteries were put on charge by Leroy to keep them in good condition and keep them ready for an engine test run at some point in the near future.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the cardan shaft safety bows were cleaned and painted by Colin G and the transmission tunnel cleaned up and painted with a coat of primer by Andy P. These preparatory steps will allow the cardan shafts to be re-fitted to the loco during the next few weeks. Meanwhile, John continued his diligent work on the re-wiring of the loco, with each wire clearly identified and properly connected while Terry and Nick continued their progress with the engine overhaul.

ON SHED – staying with the Class 47 theme from last week, and not very far from Landore shed ….. we see 47 229 (formerly D1905) hauling a Ford Motor Co train loaded with brand new Mark II Ford Escorts eastwards through Bridgend station on Saturday 26th February 1977. This loco was delivered new to Cardiff Canton depot on 23rd September 1965 and ended her days working out of Bescot depot until the last day of 2006, a very useful career spanning 41 years. As to why the Escorts were heading east towards Cardiff, we can’t really say, unless they were imported through Fishguard Harbour. Can you help us explain this working ? Use our CONTACT FORM if you can help answer this question.

This is the first DIESELGEN bulletin of 2023 and covers the movements of both Class 33 ‘Cromptons’ as the railway prepares for re-opening on SATURDAY 18th March. The following movements are planned:

Tuesday 14th March 2023 – Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6575 (33 057) will shunt the North Yard at Williton (WN) and attach to Mk. 1 coach W43508 that has been undergoing repairs and a repaint in the hands of of WSR RESTORATIONS. The coach will be moved to Bishops Lydeard (BL) to rejoin the ‘QUANTOCK BELLE‘ dining set. The loco will then remain at BL and become the duty loco to support the re-opening. The booked time for this movement is as follows:

Depart WN 15:00 arrive BL 15:33

Friday 17th March 2023 – Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) will return from Minehead (MD) to WN and enter the Swindon Shed for a repaint. The railway will be moving other locos and coaches from MD to BL from 1200 onwards on this day, so the ’33’ may hitch a ride on the back of one of those services. If the loco moves as a ‘Light Engine’, the booked time for this movement will be:

Depart MD 13:15 arrive WN 14:01

Both of the above workings are special workings and as such, they are subject to variation according to operational requirements, so the actual timings may differ from those given.

As the preparations for the re-opening of the WSR on Saturday 18th March gather pace, Class 33 D6575 (33 057) has been readied for service and will be in use next Tuesday (14th) on an Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) move from Williton to Bishops Lydeard and will remain there on standby duty. Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9526 is also available for use at Bishops Lydeard and will cover for Class 09 D4107 (09 019) who will be staying at Williton a while longer for additional repairs.

Meanwhile, Class 33 ‘Crompton’ D6566 (33 048) has been in use at weekends at Minehead in support of crew refresher training and competency testing. This loco will return to Williton next Friday (17th) and will go straight into the Swindon Shed to undergo a full repaint, retaining the same green and cream livery as previously.

The maintenance work on shunter D4107 (09 019) has included electrical and mechanical items that have been repaired on site at Williton, but one item that will have to be sent to an outside contractor for repair is a leaking oil cooler element. This has been isolated to confirm that it is the source of an oil leak, but must now be removed and sent to APPLIED RADIATORS in Stoke-on-Trent for specialist repair.

Class 09 D4107 (09 019) – behind the radiator shutters at the nose end of the locomotive, two oil cooler elements can be seen bolted to the radiator frame. One of these elements is leaking and must be removed and sent to APPLIED RADIATORS for specialist repair. WSR PRE-SEASON BRIEFING

The WSR held a pre-season briefing for all volunteers last Saturday 4th March, but as this was a working day for DEPG volunteers, Chairman Martin Howard attended on behalf of the DEPG and then brought the messages back to the yard to brief onwards. Martin has provided the following synopsis of this very useful and informative session, as follows:

Synopsis of a Volunteer Staff Brief given in the DEPG Messroom on 4th March 2023

This was a briefer brief arising from the Pre-Season Brief given to volunteers at Wellington School that same morning. More detailed coverage of the main Wellington brief has been provided to volunteers via the Heritage Operations Processing System (HOPS).

Welcome and introduction from WSR Chairman Jonathan Jones-Pratt.

    • Matt Green, a new Health & Safety Advisor had been appointed by WSR PLC and he will shortly be taking up his post.
    • Nic Wheeler has also been appointed as Environmental Advisor to the PLC.

General Manager Kerry Noble looked back at the last five years. This has shown that the WSR has been through a lot but has also come a long way. One clear point is that there is no longer any certainty on what constitutes a ‘normal’ year.

WSR Director Frank Courtney told the meeting that the PLC held a Management Conference at STEAM in Swindon on 25th February. At this event the PLC Board were able to meet and talk directly with senior WSR Management for a frank exchange of views. All felt it was a very worthwhile exercise and should be repeated.

WSRA Chairman Geoff Garfield explained how recent differences had been left behind and good progress was being made on several fronts to support the railway. Chief amongst these are a Landslip Appeal (already halfway to target in 4 weeks)Track Materials Appeal4561 Appeal and help with financial assistance for repairs to DEPG’s Goods Shed.

WSRHT Chairman Mike Thompson outlined the progress the Trust was making on their projects to refurbish genuine GWR coaches, improve working facilities and upgrade their museum displays. He also gave an overview of proposals to improve the visitor experience for Bishops Lydeard.

WSR Chairman Jonathan Jones-Pratt gave details of a recent safety review carried out by WSR Management and gave an overview of improvements that will be rolled out in the coming months, including the adoption of the Office of Rail and Road’s (ORR’s) RM3 (Risk Management Maturity Model) safety management system.

General Manager Kerry Noble then gave a short presentation to show some of the commercial initiatives that are being tried this year. Among them are evening photo-shoots where these can be organised economically, additional Diesel Driver Experience Courses (DDECs) and the introduction of a monthly awards scheme to encourage staff performance.

Finally there was the presentation of Long Service Awards. These were backdated to include 2019 due to Covid. The DEPG staff that received awards were:

    • Cameron Walker – 10 Years
    • Terry Deacon – 20 Years
    • Julian Bracchi – 30 Years
    • Mike Harris – 30 Years
    • Julie Tucker – 30 Years
    • Paul Tucker – 30 Years

The Awards were collected on their behalf by Chairman Martin Howard and either already have been, or will be, given to the individuals concerned at a suitable opportunity.

The briefings delivered an effective balance of information and motivation and were well worth the effort. Well done to all involved!

Terry Deacon (left) was presented with his 20 years of Service Award at Williton on Saturday 4th March 2023 and Mike Harris was presented with his 30 year Award, dating back to 2019. Congratulations and many thanks to both volunteers for their massive (and continuing) contribution to both the DEPG and the WSR. Photo by Andy Royal © CC BY-NC 3.0

    LOCO NEWS:

Class 52 D1010 ‘WESTERN CAMPAIGNER’ – progress continued on multiple fronts last week, with Gordon at work refitting the wood trim around the side windows at ‘A’ end while Ian F continued his diligent work on the ‘B’ bodyside. At the opposite end of the loco, Andy and Natalie worked under the floor at ‘B’ end, removing the life-expired conduits and cabling and preparing for new wiring where necessary, while Leroy was busy assessing the radiator elements. The transmission overhaul team (Colin F and Geoff on Mondays, Colin F and Tim on Tuesdays) made further progress with the fully separated components parts of the ‘B’ transmission. Here’s a few photos covering some of the activities:

D1010 – evidence of the German origin of the ‘B’ transmission’s internal components, the filling pump drive pinion clearly shows the manufacturer as KLINGELNBERG, a company still in business producing bevel gears (amongst other things). Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7018 – no change this week.

Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9518 – the cardan shafts are approaching readiness for re-fitting with just the final coat of paint required before they are hoisted into position. The splined joints have been checked and re-greased and the universal joints have passed inspection and been filled with fresh grease, so these heavy and expensive parts are still fit for use after all these years. ON SHED – last week, we featured a photograph that was discovered at our Williton depot recently and depicts our very own D1661 (47077, 47613, 47840) ‘NORTH STAR’ on shed somewhere, sometime. We asked our readers for their thoughts on where the loco could be, and within seconds we had a response from well-known author and DEPG member Roger Geach who stated that the photo was taken at Landore Depot (87A) in Swansea. We then had a response from DEPG member and former volunteer Paul Mear confirming the same. The date can now be narrowed down to between November 1969 and April 1973, during which time she was allocated to ’87A’. Any additional information would be welcomed. Many thanks to Roger and Paul for responding so quickly.
